MUST LOVE HELLHOUNDS is a paranormal treat. There are many paranormal books out there, but not many that portray hellhounds. Romance, mystery, laugh-out loud humor, and four fabulous authors make this anthology a must read! Simply fabulous!(less)

A Questionable Client by Ilona Andrews is a short story in the Kate Daniels series. Kate gets to go on a blug gig - a bodyguard job. She hates bodyguard jobs, but needs the money. When she meets the client, she questions her sanity.
Fans of the Dresden Files (raises hand) will enjoy the short story by Jim Butcher - Even Hand. No, it's not about Harry Dresden, but about John Marcone, the crime boss that is always after Harry. Here, Marcone is out to protect children at any cost, even if it costs his business money.
Carrie Vaughn writes a short story about a werewolf hunter in God's Creatures. Cormac is hunting it, and the closest building is a Cathlic school and church. He is determined to kill it before it kills again.
There are other stories by Shannon K. Butcher, Rachel Caine, P.N. Elrod, Deidre Knight, Vicki Pettersson, and Lilith Saintcrow. I found the collection to be enjoyable and liked revisiting a few secondary characters from favorite series. (less)

When I was presented the opportunity to read Those Who Fight Monsters, I was delighted. Then, with the tantalizing book in my hand, I was ecstatic to read that most of the short stories in the book are from characters of urban fantasy series that I read! Talk about a home run.
Meet the Detectives:
Danny Hendrickson - from Laura Anne Gilman's Cosa Nostradamus series. Kate Connor - from Julie Kenner’s Demon Hunting Soccer Mom series. John Taylor - from Simon R. Green’s Nightside series. Jill Kismet - from Lilith Saintcrow’s Jill Kismet series. Jessi Hardin - from Carrie Vaughn’s Kitty Norville series. Quincey Morris - from Justin Gustainis’ Morris/Chastain Investigations series. Marla Mason - from T. A. Pratt's Marla Mason series. Tony Foster - from Tanya Huff’s Smoke and Shadows series. Dawn Madison - from Chris Marie Green’s Vampire Babylon series. Pete Caldecott - from Caitlin Kittredge’s Black London series. Tony Giodone - from C. T. Adams and Cathy Clamp’s Tales of the Sazi series. Jezebel - from Jackie Kessler’s Hell on Earth series. Piers Knight - from C. J. Henderson’s Brooklyn Knight series. Cassiel - from Rachel Caine’s Outcast Season series.
Now to be honest, of the fourteen stories, I had not read any works from a few of them. But those that I liked, I plan on going back and getting the series. Demons, werewolves, vampires and more! A sneak preview at just a few of these dark stories:
Chris Marie Green's Dawn Madison and her sidekick Kiko visit old Hollywood. Ghosts, vampires or something else? Great to revisit these characters since the series ended last year.
Jackie Kessler's Hellbound, a Hell on Earth Story, takes us on a journey with incubus and succubus. Jezebel and Daun intend to send an evil magician's soul to the Pits of Hell.
Justin Gustainis's Deal Breaker tells the story of a Quincy Morris, an occult detective, trying to help a man who sold his soul to the devil.
You'll want to leave the light on when you crack open this delectable morsel of kick-butt detectives and eccentric and quirky characters. Each author has done a spectacular job with their character development, world-building and dialogue all packed into a few pages . Plenty of action between these pages that will send chills up your spine or speed up your heart.(less)

She does wear a family heirloom, a locket, that she holds onto like her life depends on it. It doesn't, but Edie's does. The locket contains the spirit of Aunt Edie, who likes to dress in flapper dresses and says whatever is on her mind.
But at a local town bash, Tammy Jo's locked it stolen. She'll do anything to get it back, even ask for the help of local hunk Bryn Lyons. The Trask family has a list of ten things never to do, and on that list is not associate with the Lyons family. Tammy Jo doesn't know why, but right now all she can think about is getting that locket back. Lyon's is a gifted sorcerer, and helps Tammy Jo try to reach her inner witch and find the locket.
But unfortunately, a pack of werewolves comes to town, and they want Tammy Jo's blood. They accuse her of killing one of their pack members, and it will take everything Tammy has to clear her name, along with some help from her friends.
Would Be Witch is a fun, mysterious paranormal. Tammy Jo is unique with her southern speak and ways. I loved watching her thought processes and seeing her in action. I look forward to more books about her. The mystery slowly develops as the story proceeds until the last few pages where the perpetrator is revealed in a splash of magic. Great read!(less)

Using magic is no exception; when you use it, it uses you back. It could be a migraine for a few days, or a week long flu, or it could take away your memories. Allie Beckstrom keeps a little black book to journal her memories because you never know what your going to lose when the magic stops.
Allie Beckstrom is a Hound. Many magic users offload the magic onto innocents so they don't have to pay the price. Allie identifies the spell caster of those that offload magic onto innocents so they can be held accountable. The pay stinks, but she enjoys her job. Her only other alternative is to work for her father, a very wealthy businessman, and she has no desire to. She hasn't seen him in seven years, but when she identifies her father's magic signature on a young boy dying from an offload, she goes to see him in a rage.
Zayvion Jones works for Allie's father. He follows Allie around, unbeknownst to her, then reports back. The day that Allie confronts her father with her findings, Zayvion follows her. Unfortunately, Allie's father is killed moments after they leave and Allie's signature is on the kill. She is now being hunted by the police. Zayvion is a Grounder, and his very touch soothes the magic in Allie.
Zayvion and Allie become close as they try and unravel who killed Allie's father and is trying to frame her. There investigations lead them to a young man named Cody the Hand, and his magic coupled with Allie's unleashes a fiery magical pool within Allie. Strange, but beautiful, psychedelic markings appear on Allie from her temple to her fingertips. Unsure of her new power and her feelings for Zayvion, Allie is bewildered when events spiral into Zayvion's betrayal.
MAGIC TO THE BONE is a thrilling, magical ride that will leave you breathless for more. Toss in a bit of romance with gritty characters, a magical world and a mysterious plot and you have a superb adventure. Devon Monk is original and exciting and I can't wait for more!(less)

Gateways to other worlds have been opened, and all sorts of creatures you thought were myth are actually real. One particular world's moon is dying and they want Atlanta to become their new home. They make a plan and put it forth into action, but the details don't come clear until later.
But as the otherworlders make themselves at home in Atlanta, they bring with them a deadly drug, Ash. The drug is killing the humans, and the cops are having a hard time finding the source. She died a few months ago, and somehow was brought back. Now, things are different for her. She has new powers building inside her and she doesn't know what is going on.
A kick-butt top-notch urban fantasy, Kelly Gay has built an extraordinary world where Supernatural meets Die Hard. The characters are well-developed and the storyline is solid. A new author on the rise and one I am definitely looking forward to reading more from.(less)

Every time she makes a mistake, more time is added to her banishment. Jazz acts like she doesn't care though as she go about eliminating curses and driving for a limo service. She has her very human room-mate who she adores, her bunny slippers that eat everything in sight, and Irma, the ghost who lives in her sports car. Things seemed to be going OK until he comes back to town. Nickolai and her go way back, like centuries, and he wants to hire her to help unravel the mystery of disappearing vampires. Nick is also a vampire and fears for his kind. Hooking back up with Jazz heats up the night, and they are soon hot on the case.
Very likable characters, laugh-out loud lines, and a magical plot will have you flying through this one. Very imaginative and wonderful. I'll definitely be on the look-out for the next one!(less)

When she’s not busy killing people and righting wrongs, Gin runs a barbecue restaurant called the Pork Pit in the fictional southern metropolis of Ashland. The city is also home to giants, dwarves, vampires, and elementals – Air, Fire, Ice, and Stone.
Fans of Estep's previous romance superhero novels might be shocked with her new urban fantasy series. Personally, I loved it and can't wait to read more about Gin. In this first installment in the series, one of Gin's jobs goes wrong. About to assassinate her mark, she in turn finds another assassin about to assassin her! Hightailing it out of the area as fast as she can, she dodges detective Donovan Caine and hurries back to her mentor, who she finds dead. She's determined to make whoever is behind the killing to make them pay, even if she has to partner up with Donovan. She previously killed his partner, so he may not be too thrilled with her, even if he does light a fire of desire in her. Spider's Bite is a gritty, urban fantasy with some hot sex scenes. Gin is a very determined and clever character who has just the right balance of good and evil to make her a super villain you will fall in love with. The world-building is phenomenal and I'm really looking forward to book two in the series, Web of Lies, due out in June 2010.(less)

While drinking one evening, her roommate, Giselle, asked Max if she would like to stay young forever, be stronger and other fairy tale questions. Half drunk, Max said yes. Unfortunately, when she woke up, she was something not quite human.
Giselle is a very powerful witch, and its the Shadowblade who guard her and the coven. Max is now bound to Giselle with spells so tightly wound, she cannot be away from her witch for long. A slave, she cannot wait for the day she can kill Giselle and get her freedom.
But Max is not like other Shadowblade guards. She has a few drops of witch blood in her, which make her even more powerful. When the Guardians decide that they want to scourge humanity from the earth with the witches serving them, Max needs to decide between saving humanity or getting her freedom.
Bitter Night is an excellent beginning to a wonderful new urban fantasy series. I couldn't put it down, I was so immersed in the story!! Max is a strong character who has so many layers, it will be interesting to see how she evolves. I wanted to hate Giselle, but there is some humanity there that makes it hard to do so, although I loved to hate her. The Shadowblade that serve under Max make for some interesting background stories and it will be interesting to see how they develop. The world is set much like ours today so it made it easy to follow; the focus the characters and storyline and not the world building. If your looking for a new gritty, action-packed magical urban fantasy, Bitter Night is a must read. Absolutely fabulous!!(less)

Years ago, she and her friends inadvertently created a bond between them and now, one of her friends has need of her help. Denying her friend will not break the bond and will only cause Liv pain.
Liv is a freelance tracker, but she also is bound to Ruben Cavazos, a skilled crime syndicate leader who controls more than half the city. Until her contract with him is complete, she is his to use. He does allow her to take on other clients in her free time though, so her friend Anne's for her to execute the party responsible for murdering her husband takes top priority.
Cam Caballero wanted to marry Liv and live happily ever after. So he was devastated when she suddenly dumped him before he could propose. Now, he is helping Anne by offering his services to partner Liv in her investigation to find the murderer who killed Anne's husband. Convinced Liv is freelance, as he doesn't see any binding rings on her arms, he can't wait to get her in his arms again. Cam works for, and is bound to, Jake Tower, another skilled crime syndicate leader who controls the other half of the city.
Liv and Cam find the murderer, but that is only the tip of the investigation. Anne's daughter is soon kidnapped, and they know they must hurry to find her before it's too late. But if Cam finds out that Liv is bound to his syndicate's enemy, he will have to take her in. Even though Liv finds she still loves Cam, she knows she can't risk their love...or their lives.
Suspense, romance and a unique paranormal world set the scene for the first installment in this new trilogy. Rachel Vincent is a master storyteller whose finely crafted characters and treacherous world energize every page. I absolutely loved it and cannot wait for the next installment!(less)
