And honestly, if I had to hear one more description of their meals and tea times I was gonna throw my iPod across the room. There were, however, some really exciting parts that kept me listening and it had some time-travel elements thrown into the mix. I was really getting into the time travel stuff then BOOM, the book ended! I was like argggh...... I may pick up the second book in hopes the that second book keeps up the pace of the end of this book. I almost gave this book 4 Stars but the first half was sooo slow I decided to base my star rating on that.(less)

I chose "Pretty When She Dies" because I no longer have HBO's True Blood and I was missing gritty stories about vampires. Well, I wasn't disappointed. The book is dark and sexy! There are no sparkling vampires here! Rhiannon brings back the old school vampire. The kind that can't walk in the daylight, or see their reflections, need an invitation to enter a home AND most importantly they drink the blood of humans. And they don't whine about it! No, running around national parks to feed in this book! This is a Vampire novel in the truest sense. That being said, it is important for me to state that while it is listed as Horror novel don't let that prejudice you if you are a fan of the genre. There is really great writing here, I've suffered through some bad writing in some books in the past few months. Well, that is not the case here. The writing is fantastic and Amaliya's journey as newbie vampire is violent, and heartbreaking. I found myself rooting for her! However, in the usual Rhiannon Frater style there is twist! It is my opinion that Rhiannon Frater is really the next "it" girl in horror. I haven't been so engrossed in horror novels since I was a teen and discovered Stephen King. Strong female leads, super scary bad guys, and great character development and superb writing.
BTW, as much as I gush in all my reviews about Rhiannon Frater's work, I fear people might think friends with the author. I have been swayed by reviews on Goodreads myself only to discover that the reviewers are were friends and family of the author. While, I live in the same city as the author I have only met her once at a book signing. My love of Ms. Frater's books is truly based on my independent discover of her books! (less)

Let me start off by saying that I am a fan of Rachel Caine and have given her other books high ratings, The Morganville Vampire series will always have a home on my book shelf but the storyline of Bite Club book bored me to tears! All my life as a huge scifi fan I've dreaded the infamous "boxing" storyline in my fiction! EVERYONE does a boxing/ultimate fighter episode. I've encountered for years on my TV series Babylon5, Star Trek (all of them), Battle Star, etc... so I just grimaced when I realized one of my favorite book series devoted a whole book to the fight club theme. It's just not my thing. Will I be reading the rest of the Morganville series, HELL YES! This one just wasn't my favorite but I still have big love for Claire Danvers and the Gang in Morganville!
