Eiland and Charon cross paths quite accidentally and it's this meeting that starts the young men on a journey together. While I found the story very well written with solid world building this was just a bit too melancholy for me to let myself sink into the prose. There was the agony of the curse, the constant barrage of hate and fear from other villagers plus the added angst from (view spoiler)[the boys being attracted to each other when their religion deemed it evil (hide spoiler)]
Really great characters and I liked the road trip aspect of it but it took a really long time for things to look brighter. (less)

I love all the comic book and pop culture references peppered throughout this book. This is all about teenage angst as Maddie keeps her nerd self hidden due to a traumatizing incident when she was younger. She presents a superficial facade to people outside her family, afraid that she'll be made fun of if her friends really knew what she liked.
I'm glad that there was this incident that Maddie focused on that caused all this trauma. It made sense to how she was acting and why she was so afraid. I liked Maddie's voice here, she was sweet and kind and so screwed up and her inner voice read her age, she seemed a very naive seventeen and I liked that about this story. I liked that she didn't have all the answers. I could see where her missteps were coming and I cringed for her but I rooted for her as well to find the courage to be herself. I wanted her to embrace her nerdiness and be happy.
This is an adorable read. YA books have never been a go to for me but as I said in my status report, nerds are my people and my kryptonite. I love to read about them and I love a sweet, gentle romance where the girl is brave enough to take a chance and go for what she really wants. I liked this story a lot. It made me smile and it made me want to go read a comic book after I finished it. I love being a nerd and I love books that encourage characters to embrace their quirks with no excuses. Recommended.

I didn't really feel connected to the characters in a way that their story moved me beyond anything more than a clinical observational way but it was a fine parable.
One thing that seemed square peggy: (view spoiler)[the BDSM, that felt odd and out of place here and the most jarring lesson (hide spoiler)](less)

This is a gentle story with likeable MC's and some strong secondary characters. The storyline is quiet and there are a few bumps along the road as their relationship grows but there is a very strong emotional connection between them. It's a very HFN and I would love to say HEA but they're very young still. I would love to see where they're at in say ten years.
This is from Toren's POV and I think that a bit from Wes POV as well would have given it a better balance.
One thing that distracted me(view spoiler)[ Toren is a bit of a crier. He's a emotional guy and while nothing wrong with that there were a lot of waterworks. (hide spoiler)]
All in all though. Cute and perfect if you're looking for a comfort read.

Every few years we get a slice of their lives at Christmas and it's killer, very emotional in the early years and doesn't let up. I loved their friendship and how it evolved and grew into more. Lovely free story with such a different kind of storyline. Just a stellar read. (less)

Well said, J.C. Lillis. Well said.
This book is just so much damn fun. Abel and Brandon's vlog, the shipper wars, Hells Bells, the con road trip. It's all just so spot on and so real to my own online shipper experiences that it just ratcheted up my love for all things this book.
Being in Brandon's head was at times both highly amusing and extremely upsetting. Him trying to figure himself out while attempting to maintain expectations set on him by his parents was so heart-breaking. I loved Brandon, I loved that he came across as just a screwed up kid finding his way and the times I wanted to smack him were balanced out by the times I wanted to hug him. Sadly we don't get to dip into Abel's brain matter but I adored him so very, very much.
This is best kind of road trip story. It's all about coming out, coming of age and trying to be true to who you want to be and just being an awesome geek at the same time. There are so many fantastic reviews of this out there and for good reason. Go read this book.
Why not? I loved everything up to the end. I know it was a short, short story but...
(view spoiler)[Still keeping them seperated for twenty years is something that I didn't like, long passages of time between MCs is a trope that I dislike with a passion.
I guess I was hoping for more of a Back to the Future-esque ending where events changed more dramatically after the time travel. (hide spoiler)]
Disappointment aside, this was a lovely little second chance story. Well worth the read!(less)
