The story opens with a young maiden who wakes in the forest with no idea who she is or how she got there. What happened to her? Why is she dressed as a stable boy? She’s injured, famished, and…not alone.
A gallant (of course) knight, Sir Galeron of Ramstone, is a short distance away, preparing fresh, succulent rabbit. The young maiden is lured from her fog—not only by the juicy, broiling meal, but also (reluctantly) by the heart-searingly-handsome knight preparing it.
What a magnificent opening! It seized my attention, my eyes were glued to each page, and my heart was pricked—forever changed. Yes! THAT is how much I adored this story.
I won’t go into detail about how I fell in love with many of the deeply textured characters, and despised the villains. Nor about how I became immersed in the powerful, romantic, mysterious plot, and the history behind this medieval tale. I won’t babble on about rooting for Ruby—the fiery-haired maiden, or my desire for Galeron (and several other armor-clad yummies.) And I’ll most certainly deny giggling like a fiend and weeping like a love-struck teen.
What I will do is highly recommend Jewel of Ramstone. To be completely honest with you, I don’t usually connect with the romance genre. Nor do I read books that take place in medieval times. But Jewel of Ramstone is unique and unpredictable.
I love getting lost in a well written story, forcing myself to read slower—to lengthen my time with the characters-that-became-friends, and let out a heavy sigh when I turn the last page—saddened that it ever had to end. *Sigh*
JM Powers, thou must write a sequel. Pray thee? (less)

I was easily caught up in this paranormal historical romance. Each page drew me closer and closer to Kara and Machias, and held me captivated to the end.
Although I’ve read other romances containing a distressed girl pining for a man she can’t have, Basket of Hope isn’t your run-of-the-mill story. It is loaded with interesting twists, and fabulous imagery that draws you in and keeps you invested. A story that can do that is truly unique. (Unique is what paranormal is supposed to be, right? LOL) I love this tale and its vivid characters.
Kara is a beautiful and innocent scullery maid who secretly pines for Machias, heir to the kingdom. She feels lowly and wonders why she even entertains the thought of being with such a man of status, but a small hope still lingers within her heart.
The All Hallows Eve Ball approaches and Machias is to chose a mate from a variety of prominent ladies. Kara’s hopes wane. Her dreams for love will be gone forever… unless something magical happens. (less)
