I am glad I finally caved in to peer pressure and read these books. This was a fast paced read with plenty to keep you engaged in the story so the plotline was definately a winner. Briggs has a real skill for character development and I never feel as if there are weaknesses in the interpersonal relationships aspect of her books. This one was no exception.
My only complaint of the entire book was with 'the object' that the Queen wanted. (view spoiler)[If Silver Borne was such a powerful thing and everyone wanted it, why didn't we ever get to see it work? Building up items of power and then doing nothing with them makes me nuts. We already have our token Fae item that is uber powerful yet does nothing in the part of the walking stick. Another just felt a bit weak and was anticlimactic for me. (hide spoiler)]
Overall I am very, VERY happy with Mercy, her world, and her friends and am off to acquire River Marked. I could cry that the next book wont be out until 2013. Tragedy! *sniff*["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>...more

Briggs has got it going on with this series. Most books have a 'feature' that stands out and causes you to really like them. A stand-put quality where the author has really exceeded expectations. This series is not like that. The Mercy Thompson series is one that few others fall in line with. It is perfectly balanced. There is just enough of everything to keep you happy, keep the story going, keep the romance aspect alive without taking over the story, enough sex appeal to keep the story hot without seeming gratuitous, enough.....of everything!
Iron Kissed was the shortest of the stories (if I am correct) but really good. A great trip into the world of the fae that revealed just enough to make the fae scary and still leave tons for development later on. I absolutely loved the turn that Mercy's relationship with Samuel took! The change in relationship with Adam was very tasteful and did not seemed forced to advance the plot. Good stuff I tell you!
I'm just sad that I have read half of the series now...sniff. It's all downhill now! ;)...more

This probably deserved more credit than I am willing to give, but I just can't get into anthologies. Writing a short story is a true talent and those writers who are capable of creating large and diverse UF/paranormal worlds and then converting them into an entire series of stories are rarely the same people who are also gifted with short story genius.
With that said, some of these stories were very pleasant to to the point of being a quality piece of work. Most rated in the meh to fine range for me but other people would undoubtedly enjoy them more. I have the overwhelming desire to rank Jim Butcher's work as one of the best in the book, but I realize I would be giving that endorsement based more on my preferences for his work overall, than on actual strength of this specific work. His was one of the better ones, but his wife, Shannon Butcher, as well as P.N. Elrod and Rachel Caine put out better examples in this collection.
If you enjoy enthologies, you will most likely find that this is a wonderful set of 'samples' for these authors. If not and you are like me, you will at least get a taste for some other authors and it will help you sort out your myriad TBR choices....more

I find myself thinking that I am reading the most bizarre book of my life, or the one that makes the most sense. Sense to the point that I am mystified as to why no one else had written something like it. In either case however, the writing is superb and this book is no exception. This was such a fun, original idea that I was destined to like it. Gaiman is one writer who manages, EVERY TIME, to make his subject macabre and funny at the same time. This takes talent (a lot folks), and once again the man has delivered.
The YA tag on this one is pointless. The only YA part of this book is the age of the protag. Ignore the DOB on your driver's license and just read this one. It is too odd...you'll have to enjoy yourself out of self defense! :)...more

Some things, my friends, are worth the wait.
Ghost Story is a prime example of why I love Jim Butcher's books. They are good books. They are great books. They rock like an 80's 'big-hair' band. They are the books that everyone wishes their book could be. They are the Six Million Dollar Man of books. They are the MacGyver of books that can build a repelling harness out of a hair scrunchie, 3 earrings, and the elastic from a pair of boxer briefs. God is jealous that he forgot to create these books.
You see where I am going with this I'm sure. They are worth a minute or two of your time.
Ghost Story was amazing and I am in a daze currently. A wonderful, floating, dreamlike, haze of satiety fed by the fantastic power of The Word of Butcher....more
