I think mostly because it was part of a trilogy, and all together I didnt' feel like it travelled from book 1 to book 3 well. Book 1 and 2 seemed to go together decent enough, but then this one was just painful to read.
Seeing the characters I'd grown the most attached to (Katniss and Peeta mostly) basically become destroyed individuals was hard. In a way, it was probably very realistic, but so at odds with their beginning characters that it was hard for me to reconcile. Especially when I see other characters that succeed and become the strong individuals that I was expecting these 2 to become. In a way though the book made it apparent that there's a touch of heartlessness and cruelty to being a leader of people and even though Katniss seemed to be able to be that person in some ways, she just wasn't. I don't know. I'm just not sure how I feel on who her and Peeta ended up being in the end.
Introducing Gale more to the reader in Book 2 reconciled the love triangle for me, and I was glad she chose Peeta at the end though I don't by her line about it being that she had enough of her own fire that she clashed too much with Gale, because Gale moves on to be an unphased leader while she becomes this person that's destroyed and sleeps nonstop and is drugging herself left and right or breaking down...it really took away the idea that there was ever any real fire in her. So in a way, for me, the way the love triangle and the big decision was made on Gale vs. Peeta, I guess it just didn't make sense to me, and yet did. It was very confusing. My brain hurts now.
I almost want to give it a 3 but I think I'm going to go for a 4. In a way the uneasy and sad ending completely fit and had a realistic quality to it instead of the expected and typical fairy tale ending. It was a happy ending, but the happiness came with a cost. And I like that in a book. (less)

I love how she hints at so much and you spend the entire book in anticipation and speculation, thinking you know what's going on or why something is happening but she never lets you know...It makes the book IMPOSSIBLE to put down! I loved loved loved the main characters. I love their strengths and survival and just everything about them. I WANT MORE. SO MUCH MORE.(less)

My biggest dissappointment with it was the lack of information we were given in the beginning on all the districts. I didn't really get a feel for what was going on in the other districts except for District 11. I was totally absorbed in the District 11 scene, and then it was like fast forward to them being back home already. Very disappointing. Especially when suddenly the other districts are all revolting! The love triangle sickened me less this book than the last. I'm still not feeling the Peeta and Katniss thing. They seem more like partners or a force together, not like soul mates or in love. I think Katniss is just a fascinating strong woman hence Peeta's infatuation with her. But I don't see a love connection there personally. I still see Katniss as being more bound to the people than a man, despite her occasional self-preservation urges. And again, not a whole lot given on Gale, which just makes this love triangle thing eye-roll worthy to me.
I did thoroughly enjoy the puzzle and mystery with the Mockingjay and District 13 and what was going on in the newest game arena. The ending was a bit abrupt and wrapped up, but I'm much more excited to read the final book in the series than I was to read the second. Bring on Mockingjay!(less)
