Much of the book was very hard to relate to and the narrative was very cumbersome at times. However, of all the love stories I've read this is the most in depth. Well worth a read.(less)

I went in expecting the same flow and development as the others and did not get that. However, it delivers on the insight into how dark and depraved the human soul can be. Rich with imagery, parallelism, and deep emotion it really was an excellent way to end the trilogy. (less)

I'd never read an account of demon possession, it was excellent. Throughout I feel humbled by how much smarter C.S. Lewis was than I'll ever be. It reads as if I'm having a conversation with him over varying topics and he is masquerading his answers with a fantasy story. The story from the first book continues into Venus, and it continues much better. Lewis does not shy away from making Christian doctrine a focus of the book. I will admit that there are several points that I felt were unsound, but then I realized it is not an exposition on his beliefs, but a means to use those beliefs in a literary fashion. For being just a lark of a contest this book stands out in my reading as an exemplary work of fiction. The series is the first science fiction I've ever read and as far as I can tell fits the genre quite well. So, even if you are not a Christian and don't share some of Lewis' views I believe the book to be more than entertaining. (less)

I think some of the grandfathers would've been more forthright with a male and the lack comes through. That being said the information, although pedantic and at times trite, is presented thoroughly and that's at least refreshing.(less)

With such a rich and deep history, this city deserves more than just a passing note of rich peoples homes, and mentions of Marshall. While the university as proved to be very beneficail to the city, it is not the end all be all of Huntington. No mention is made of some of the most important and noteworthy citizens, only the elite. This book could be very beneficial to our city if written by someone who did the slightest bit of research.(less)

There is an excellent amount of intrigue, and suspense. There are times when the book is quite slow, especially during the linguistic sections. But, as long as you remain with the idea that this all takes place on another planet, you will not be disappointed. The typical Lewis symbolisms and allusions are not present. This series takes a more blatant approach and presupposes a belief in a supreme being. Very excellent written and most likely one of my favorite Lewis writings. The greatest moments come when the antagonist loses his sense of self and realizes that he is humbled by the lifestyles of those around him. A very good lesson for all of us to consider if we truly see ourselves as strangers in this world.(less)

If you've seen the many many movies and have never read the book, you've cheated yourself. This book is by no means a mere Christmas story. This is one of the most moving stories of salvation most likely ever written. While Jesus is not mentioned often outright or even by name, it is clear his presence is at the forefront of Dickens' thought process. This book is very short with a lot of narrative. However, the character development comes through the description of cats, of cold, of darkness, and even of food. It is a thrilling experience to read and one I feel everyone should have a least once a year.(less)

There are some methods that I would love to try out. However, the advent of importance and regulation being placed on sanitiation means that I will never try them commercially. I think that the post prohibition beer state we live has santized the flavor out of many lager beers. This is essentially a straight forward how to book. Very informative and an enjoyable read.(less)

An outstanding read. Like most books it is way better than the movie, which ended halfway through by the way. Very quotable and most likely not written with a Christian perspective but there are more than a few parallels. I found myself relating to the protagonist not just in my childhood but also in my very restless adulthood. The end is very moving and if I were less of a man I would've cried. ( I was in public). All in all definitely one I'm going to reccomend to quite a few.(less)

It seems that very few go through basic training without at least one or two stories. The greatest surprise for me was that Homer Hickham (author of October Sky and a native West Virginian) submitted a few stories. While it doesn't necessarily prepare you for Basic training, it absolutely gives an insight into the world of the military ethos. Well worth the read if you're retired, active or just intrigued by a completely different daily routine.(less)
