Adventurous, gory, provocative, and intelligent; only some of the many words I could use to describe this final epic book.
I fell in love with Deuce so much in this book, while she took some time in books 1 and 2 for me to warm up to it was worth it. Her growth through this series was amazing and it was exciting to journey with her. Fade is a fascinating character and his struggle through this book really brought him to life. Deuce and Fade’s relationship is so touching and I love that their relationship makes them better when together, but we still get to read about them independently as well. Maybe one of my favorite parts is how realistic the romance in this story felt. Stalker and Tegan are such wonderful secondary characters and they each continue to have their storylines in Horde. They both bring depth to this story and I always enjoy reading about them. The additional characters we meet or see again add such flavor and complexity.
The plot of this series is original, brilliant, and well executed (always an important factor). I am a huge fan of dystopian novels and I love all the twists and turns that Ann Aguirre adds along the way. I love that we continue to learn more about this world, how things have changed over time, and even some science aspects make an appearance. I finally got my topside world building and it was awesome! The action is always spot on, with a little danger, and always keeps the pace moving forward. At the beginning of book 1 I never would have guessed or even imagined where things would end up by the conclusion of book 3. What a spectacular adventure.
I will definitely be reading this series again in the future! (less)

What a great start to a new series by one of my favorite authors. I went into the series knowing it was going to be a different style and genre from her previous series, but she did an amazing job with it. What a unique concept for a book, as expected...very original. The world building is on a whole new level, the characters are complex and slowly explored over time, the writing was detailed but fun, and the plot was well paced so my interest just grew as the book continued. As usual with Richelle Meads's books I couldn't put it down once I started it. I can't wait to see where she takes us next.(less)

The concept for this book is so intriguing that I couldn’t wait to start reading it. What a fascinating and creepy plot, disturbing and addictive story both before and after I finished it.
Sal took me a little time to really warm up to but after about 1/3 of the book I found her to be a very likeable character. So far Nathan is pretty awesome and is consistently loving and supportive to Sally. Their relationship rocks and it makes them a great pair to read about. We don’t know a ton about him, but I am interested in his character and expect we’ll learn a lot more down the road. I can’t wait to learn more about Tansy and Adam, fascinating personalities (could say so much more). Dr. Banks was another character I spent a lot of time thinking about while reading this book. While he is kind of the bad guy right from the start, things are never that black and white for Mira Grant and I have so many questions about him. I also loved the sections from his interview, what a great way to learn side notes about his story.
The plot builds over time, and while it starts a little slowly, the pacing was good. I felt it was important to get to know the characters and Mira Grant takes the time to introduce them all really well. I also love her science and that she really dives in to give her readers a full picture. I never feel like anything is dumbed down and yet I also never struggle to understand her science and follow along, great writing. Great writing, I have to say it again, because all the aspects of her book just work: plot, pacing, characters, science, relationships, mystery.
I didn’t find this story to have quite the same shock value as the Newsflesh trilogy…yet, but I am not sure it’s supposed to…yet. In some ways I felt lead down the road to reach conclusions before they were truly revealed. Plus going into this story I already had some suspicions. Not to say that there weren’t some good surprises and developments, because there were. I know more surprises will being coming soon. Since it is just book 1 nothing is super developed yet, only the foundation has been laid. Of course I love that this leaves me with lots of questions, because I know they’ll get answered fully later on.
I am so excited to be reading this for my book club as it’s such a great book to discuss, truly the possible topics are endless. It is also a book I feel deserves to be talked about. I am so looking forward to book 2! (less)
