I fell in love with Deuce so much in this book, while she took some time in books 1 and 2 for me to warm up to it was worth it. Her growth through this series was amazing and it was exciting to journey with her. Fade is a fascinating character and his struggle through this book really brought him to life. Deuce and Fade’s relationship is so touching and I love that their relationship makes them better when together, but we still get to read about them independently as well. Maybe one of my favorite parts is how realistic the romance in this story felt. Stalker and Tegan are such wonderful secondary characters and they each continue to have their storylines in Horde. They both bring depth to this story and I always enjoy reading about them. The additional characters we meet or see again add such flavor and complexity.
The plot of this series is original, brilliant, and well executed (always an important factor). I am a huge fan of dystopian novels and I love all the twists and turns that Ann Aguirre adds along the way. I love that we continue to learn more about this world, how things have changed over time, and even some science aspects make an appearance. I finally got my topside world building and it was awesome! The action is always spot on, with a little danger, and always keeps the pace moving forward. At the beginning of book 1 I never would have guessed or even imagined where things would end up by the conclusion of book 3. What a spectacular adventure.
I will definitely be reading this series again in the future! ...more

Overall, I was really disappointed, which surprised me because I loved books one and two.
I don't think the writing was as strong in this book, which really effected so many aspects of the book: plot, pacing, characters, built up, world building, etc.
The pacing through the whole story was a problem, but the beginning and the ending were the worst for me. It look me a long time to get back into the story and the wrap up after the major end points was almost painful. The concept seemed all over the place and unclear. The new ideas/direction (although interesting) seemed jumpy, forced, and were undeveloped (due to lack of time, since there were so many new things introduced in a final book). This also meant many of the many struggles and ideas from previous books were sort of discarded.
Switching between Tris and Four's POVs didn't work at all for me. Neither character had a strong voice and I really struggled to remember I was reading from Four's perspective during those chapters.
For the most part my disappointment has nothing to do with the ending that has been widely discussed. Although, after reading Roth's explanation I don't think she executed what she was going for very well. Whatever the ending of book (whether expected or not, whether what I wanted or not) should at least have that wow factor of a big ending. For me the ending just fell flat. Which pretty much sums up my thoughts on the whole book.
I do look forward to seeing where Roth decides to write next and hope she finds her way back to the unique ideas, writing and story telling of Divergent and Insurgent. ...more
