As with all of Amy Tan's books, this novel centers around family and how family is home, even if it's complicated. Ruth has always been embarrased by her mother and treated her horribly as a teenager. She had weird old world ways like thining about luck, talking about ghosts, and feeling that the ancestors were always around. But when Ruth's mother is diagnosed with dementia, Ruth is determined to care for her despite their complex relationship. Ruth begins to see her life backwards in a different lens, recalling events as a teen and realizing that she never cared to have the time to hear her mother's story. The diagnosis finally gets Ruth to realize what's important, and finally have the time to discover her mother's, and her own, story. Always engrossing, this novel is up to par with the rest of Amy Tan's previous works. Interestingly, this novel almost wasn't published due to the death of her mother and another family member. I think that makes her writing as a daughter that much richer. If you are a fan of cultural fiction, or of Amy Tan, you will not be disappointed! (less)

Absolutely heartbreakingly beautiful. For anyone who has ever loved books as posessions. It's set in the holocaust, but it's not the usual absolutely depressing story. It's about a little girl and her story during this time- from the point of view of death. It's got a great twist, and though macabre at times, is strangely uplifting. I've read this one several times too- which is only reserved for the best books.(less)
