OtheThis short novella is part of the Charley Davidson paranormal suspense series by Darynda Jones and should be read after First Grave on the Right. Otherwise you'll be spoiled by knowing the relationship between Charley and another important character without having seen it develop in the more suspenseful way it is presented in First Grave on the Right.
Charley Davidson is the grim reaper. She can see and talk to people who have died but who have not yet crossed over to the other side. The story in For I Have Sinned is told from the first person point of view of a woman who has come to Charley but has no idea why. She figures out she is dead but she doesn't remember anything about her life, not even her name. She only remembers a feeling of falling and knowing she has decided to die. Charley sets out to help the young woman find out who she was, how she died and hopefully help her to cross over.
For such a short story, this novella gives the reader quite an emotional look into Charley's world and the kinds of deaths she comes across in her role as the grim reaper. She's got the same upfront, sassy way about her that she does in First Grave on the Right, but she also reveals her compassionate nature in such a beautiful way that I actually got choked up at the end of this one. She really does know how to help the lost souls of the dead find their way. Very touching. ...more
I plucked this one out of the depths of my to-be-read shelf while looking for a different book and decided to give it a go since it was so short. TheI plucked this one out of the depths of my to-be-read shelf while looking for a different book and decided to give it a go since it was so short. The premise of the story is promising--two people whose lives and love for each other have been tied together for a thousand years. Bryna Torrence has always been fully aware of their destined connection while Calin Farrell has practically no idea other than the dreams that have haunted him his whole life. They're finally brought together and Bryna has one night to convince Calin that he is her lover and destined to battle an evil wizard to save her and the world. I realize this story is only a novella, but even with that consideration, I think the story was super rushed and rather incomplete. Their moments of intimacy--both emotional and physical, come out of nowhere and as soon as the evil wizard is destroyed the characters have this sense of complete understanding of the entire situation that was not effectively conveyed to the reader. My disappointment in this story won't deter me from reading more books by Nora Roberts, however. I've read numerous of her other books, most of them of a much higher calibre than this novella. ...more

Ami Jordan is still feeling the sting from getting dumped by her ex and is sort of coasting through life right now trying to figure out what to do with herself. She thought she was on track with her plan to settle down in a house of her own complete with husband, kids and a garden out back, but now she's back to square one with everything--even her career. When she meets rugged Marcus Anderson, a friend of her sister and brother-in-law, there's instant attraction even though Ami and Marcus are from two different worlds and are constantly butting heads over it. Ami's pretty sarcastic, but Marcus is easy going and takes it in stride, turning it into friendly, if not flirtatious, banter. Ami eventually learns that Marcus isn't anything like her ex. He's kind hearted, patient and if nothing else, very persistent. In time, these two learn exactly where to compromise in order to find long term happiness as a couple.
Overall, Lumberjack in Love is a very cute, heartwarming romance. The dialogue is fun--at times sexy and other times very sweet and kind. I have to admit I often found the sexy talk--(and the physical sex) to be a bit too much too soon. Too much that it felt contrived and corny at times. I think this was exacerbated by Ami's constant dithering between insulting Marcus and the rural Vermont life one minute and wanting to jump him the very next minute. I realize the intent was that Ami wanted the release and passion of a one night stand without any commitment, but the delivery felt kind of off. In the end, though, I liked how they worked everything out and found their happily ever after together. A nice little feel-good kind of story. ...more

Bailey Frost is a young 20-something working at a wedding cake shop. She's a sweet girl with a great group of best friends who happen to be guys--Tom and Olly who also happen to be her housemates, and their shy partner in crime, Linc. When Bailey is tragically dumped by a cheating boyfriend, these guys show Bailey nothing but brotherly love and support to help her get over her ex. After a strong drink with the guys, Bailey confesses that she's never had an orgasm with a man. Little does she know that Linc has been pining for her for some time, so when they both find themselves without plans on Valentine's Day, he comes up with a plan to make sure Bailey finally gets the bit O she's long deserved.
The friendships are what really pull this short story together--right down to the friends to lovers romance between Bailey and Linc. After her sad history of ending up with selfish boyfriends, it's about time she be seduced by a sexy, caring guy who puts her pleasure first!
This short story is quite the quickie, but the British wit and all around fun banter and caring friendship between these characters make it a just enough to whet your appetite for more stories from this author. I'll be keeping my eye out for Tom and Olly's stories for sure. ...more
