A must for anyone who is a true bibliophile and lover of bookstores. The things that keep me from giving it five stars is the implausibility of what social services would have allowed regarding Maya's orphaned state and I also thought the story arcs wrapped up a quickly in Part II. They were realistic and beautiful if not bittersweet, but I would have liked a bit more. I am secretly hoping there will be a sequel story. I would like to see where Maya's life leads. ...more

The book is being marketed as paranormal romance, but for those of you who are strict about having their paranormal romances ending with a happily ever after for main couple, you may want to go into this one thinking it is more urban fantasy with romantic elements.
The book blurb for this book is pretty spot on. In a world where families with strong magical powers live alongside regular humans with no magic at all, it's the people with magic who have a lot of money and power. And as you might expect, those in power tend to abuse their power, often at the expense of the innocent and powerless. So there's this powerful Prime, which is a person with highest magical capabilities, who appears to be intent on burning Houston up. He has his reasons although they are not clear to anyone at first. Our heroine is Nevada Baylor, a young woman with an untrained minor magical ability barely keeping her family's private investigator company in business when she is pretty much forced on the case to find this guy and bring him in alive. She gets cornered yet again and practically has no choice but to join forces with Mad Rogan, one of Houston's most infamous Primes. He's reclusive, rich, powerful and scary as heck. As you can guess, they are from opposite sides of the spectrum as far as two people can get so watching them work together is quite a trip!
The story is full of mystery, adventure, misadventure, and a whole lot of humor. Oh and there's some romance in here, too. While Nevada and Rogan don't end up with a happily ever after at the end of this book, the cat and mouse game between them is well under way and I cannot wait to see what transpires between these two next. No matter what, I do expect a lot more laughs as well as tenderness as these two bring out the worst in each other while discovering the best about the other one along the way, perhaps while saving Houston from the indiscriminate power games of the city's mages....more
