There was also a het sex scene (albeit, brief) that did not sit well with me at all. And then there was mention of Viggo marrying and having children at some point in the future, but oh...he'll keep Colum on the side as his lover. Yuck. :( I realize that may be "authentic" to the time/setting, but nothing kills my enjoyment of a story faster than that particular scenario.
After that little tidbit of info (which was unhappily stuck in my mind) I just couldn't properly enjoy the rest of the story. And then, after Viggo had been quite cruel and cold in the beginning (which was a bit of a shock, and made me feel quite bad for Colum), there were a few moments between the two of them, towards the end, that were kind of overly sappy, and seemed very out of character. It was kind of weird, and reinforced that feeling I had of it being written by someone else.
I don't know...the writing itself was technically very good, which is why I decided to give it 3-stars. But for my personal enjoyment of the story, it's more like a 2-star read for me. So I doubt I'll be continuing with this series. :((less)

Did you watch the Vikings (2013) TV Series and imagine the storyline following a...slightly different script, from the point where Ragnar attacks the monastery and takes Athelstan as his slave? If so, you're going to love this! :P
For me, the emotional aspect of this story made the sex so much hotter than if it had been just plain erotica. Colum may be Viggo's slave, but there's a measure of kindness and caring there, and some very sexy possessiveness, that takes the sting out of Viggo's sometimes rough and callous treatment of Colum. There's also a mutual respect between the two of them, stemming from the surprising revelation that there's more to each of them than what the other expected.
I did feel a bit sorry for poor Niall (Colum's friend, who is also taken prisoner), although...I guess it wasn't too bad since he did seem to enjoy being used and abused. But I do hope Book 2 will find him with someone a bit kinder and more...appreciative of what he has to offer. Heh. :P(less)

It was quite cute/funny, but the artwork on the tentaclesex panels was kind of busy/messy, so with some of them, it takes a bit of time to figure out what exactly you're looking at. It's also partially censored, with squiggly white lines over the cockheads and at points of penetration. I don't know if that's how the original is or if the scanlators did that. Either way...what a shame.
Anyway, it's a free scanlation, so if you enjoy manga and tentaclesex, you should definitely give it a try. :)(less)

My only nitpick was that it would have been nice to get an explanation of the milk and molasses. I'd never heard of that before, so I had to look it up. Apparently, it's used to treat severe cases of constipation, and causes spasms and severe cramping.(less)

For 95% of the story they were either too passive with each other, or too prickly and argumentative. Zayid constantly treated Takeyuki like an annoying child (and rightly so - he was a bit of a whiny idiot), and then suddenly at the end...BAM! They're declaring their love for each other and jumping into bed. And that sex scene was just awful. The descriptions were silly and just so...unsexy. Every time Takeyuki's ass-cheeks were described as "folds" I literally cringed.
The only good thing I can say about this was that the descriptions of the country/landscape and their journey through the desert were very well done, and the artwork was beautiful. That's the only reason I gave this a 2-star rating rather than a 1-star.

Unfortunately, in this story, it was just kind of average. If the writing hadn't been so awkward and choppy, it might have been much better. This is my first novel by this author, so I don't know if that's just her writing style or if it's due to the translation.
Anyhow...it's a mildly entertaining read if you've got nothing better. Not completely awful, but not that great either. Although, I did quite enjoy the scene where Yuichi was molesting Kanae on the train. :P
Oh, and one warning...Kanae has a self-lubricating asshole. *sighs and rolls eyes* Why the hell do authors do that? If it's a non-human character, okay fine...I can buy that. But Humans? Ugh! So ridiculous. :(

Just like the authors' other story (Schadenfreude), I could not put this one down. Stayed up all night to read it from start to finish!
Schadenfreude was very dark and disturbing, but this one is even more so. It's extremely violent, bloody, gory, and has a lot of very graphic, disturbing content, so make sure you heed the warnings before you give it a try.
The protags (Oberon and Leander) are not the "good guys". They're sick, twisted, sadistic killers who love to murder, maim and torture...and I loved them! They were both such incredibly fascinating characters, and together they were just so wonderful and perfect for each other...in that sweet, serial killer kind of way. :P Lots of great character development as well, especially in regards to Leander. I loved seeing how he embraced his true nature and became a killer, with Oberon's guidance. The supporting characters were also very interesting and well written.
A major kudos to the author for his amazing skill in making me care about these "evil" characters so much, and having me root for them all the way! And make no mistake...they both have some major traumas in their past (especially Oberon), but that's not what makes them the way they are. They're not "misunderstood" heroes with redeeming qualities, who turn out to be not as bad as we're led to believe. They were born that way, and they remain that way through the entire story...possibly becoming even more bloodthirsty once they connect with each other. They are definitely soulmates, IMO. :)
The only thing I really hated about this story was the kiddie rape/molestation. Now, I'd read the warning in the description, but I didn't think this would apply to the main characters. But Unfortunately, it did. That disturbed me quite a LOT, and it's a line I really wish the author hadn't crossed. (I really wish he'd just had the kids tortured/killed, like everyone else, and left out the sexual stuff). But ultimately, I loved everything else so much that I tried to mentally delete those parts from my brain, and pretend like they didn't exist. If I didn't do that, I would have ended up hating the characters, and giving up on the story. So...5-stars for my personal, mentally-edited version. :P And 4-stars for the original pedophilia version. :(
On a side note...does anyone know if this author has written anything else? And if so, where can it be found? (less)

It's sadistic, twisted, horrifying, disturbing...and I just could not put it down, even though my stomach was all tied up in knots through the entire thing, and I actually felt physically nauseous several times. That has never happened to me before. I usually have a very strong stomach when it comes to violence and torture (in literature), and have actually read much more brutal, graphic content than this in other stories. But this one had a much more profound effect on me, most likely because the medical experiments/tortures described are based on real life events: Nazi human experimentation (Josef Mengele also makes an appearance as a fairly prominent character in this story).
As for the main characters...despite what you may think for a large portion of this story, there is actually a "romance" here (IMO), but I found I had to create a new label/shelf for it, because to call it an "erotic romance" would be ten kinds of wrong. It's dark, twisted and sadistic (Stockholm Syndrome at its very worst) and the "romance" kind of creeps up on you so very slowly. At the beginning of the story I was horrified with their "relationship"...during the last quarter I was an emotional wreck, hoping like hell that they would have a happy ending...together. (less)
