To begin with, it started out on a very sour note when Noah is literally manhandled and dragged out of his home, crutches and all. And the love interest (Wade) just stands there and watches. A crippled man and intended mate, who at this point is more of a human than a shifter, is being treated this way by those who claim to be "rescuing" him? Really?
Then he's cuffed upside the head (ummm... skull split open, acute migranes - any of this ringing a bell??) for simply balking at being shoved into the car, after which his wrists and ankles are bound. Again, does nobody give a damn that he's got crippled legs and incredibly fragile knees?? WTF?
After that, Noah spends a lot of time in the bedroom, alone, sick, collapsed on the floor in pain, etc., with the occasional visit from Fletcher (AKA: Mr. 'I couldn't care less if you're suffering' Insensitive). And the even less occasional visits from Wade, which were mostly just for a fuck session.
One good thing I'll say about this story is that the sex scenes were hot, and Kari Gregg's writing in general is very good, which is the only thing that saved this one from a 1-star rating. However... the sex was not as hot as it should have been because there was absolutely no chemistry between the two MCs. And the further I got into the story, the more I disliked Wade. At the point where I gave up on this (at about 75% - just after the knotting scene) things between them had started to change a little, and we finally see that maybe Wade's not such an indifferent, insensitive prick after all, but by then it was too late for me. I just couldn't bring myself to care what happened to the two of them and I called it quits.
There were also a number of things that were never properly explained (at least, not up to the 75% mark):
* How the humans know about shifters. * The whole "taboo issue" of humans giving medical treatment to shifters. * Why they would even want to murder an injured child. Are they really just that cold? Well, I guess that's not too much of a surprise, considering the way the story opened... * The m-preg seemed to come out of nowhere (even though, yes, I knew it was going to be in there) and was very matter-of-fact, leaving me thinking: Ummm...okay...
In conclusion... poor, poor Noah. I really felt like I wanted to pluck him out of this story and drop him down into one with a kinder pack and a more loving, caring mate.
If I were a character in this book, I would avoid that pack like the fucking plague.

I would have given it 5-stars except that it ended with a cliffhanger and felt very much like it was just the first part of a much longer novel, which was really disappointing because the story was so damn good and I loved the characters.(less)

I really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to seeing more of the "Magician's Coven" universe. *adds Magolescence to the to-read list* :)

This is me:
I know you probably wouldn't guess but I am a powerful wizard, still trying to discover my abilities and learning my limits. One night while practicing my fire control I had an accident. (Flaming ball throwing is not as easy as it sounds!) Anyway, things quickly got out of hand and I thought i was going to die... then he showed up:

I would love you if you gave him a suit-wearing, tough Dom. No limits on how far to go, i like dark reads. *Please don't leave the child as an ornament, give him a little personality. The term family dynamics, comes to mind. I hope i'm not being too picky. I just really want good family dynamic, without it being too sweet, and some kinks.

He is looking (and rather disapprovingly I have to say) at his sexy dominant mate, an alpha. They both know they are each others mates, but the claiming has yet to be done. So what's wrong? The redhead has accidentally seen someone else coming on to his mate, but didn't see the immediate rejection of those advances. And right now the alpha is in for a big surprise. His seemingly docile and obedient Omega mate is ready to deliver the first ass chewing of his life. How are they going to settle it? I guess some heated discussion, maybe with a couple of rough moments and afterwards lots of make up smex is in order.

Is this blood play? Knife play gone too far? Is he a vampire that just botched his first feeding? Or a blood slave, finally taking his evil master out, so he can run off with the vamp of his dreams? Is he a good Samaritan, helping out after witnessing a car accident? Is there a hot doctor in his future? Or is there something more sinister going on? I don't care! I just need to know! TELL ME WHAT'S GOING ON!!!

But despite that, I found myself really enjoying this story. It was well written, hot, sexy, and the flashbacks were a great teaser, making me very curious about what had happened between these two, to bring them to this present confrontation. The ending was great as well, and left me with a silly grin on my face.
Changing the Guard by Peter Hansen - ★★★ This one was a decent read, although much too short in my opinion. And I was a bit disappointed that the sex scene was also so short, with parts of what they did together being mentioned briefly after the fact. It made things not quite as hot as they could have been. The twist at the ending was quite nice, though.
The Machinist by Gryvon - ★★★★ Oh wow...this story was smokin' hot, really kinky, and pushed all my buttons. The only thing stopping me from giving it 5 stars was that other than their mutual enjoyment of the kinky sex, there didn't seem to be any real connection between the characters. And the ending was a bit abrupt.
My Rifle is Human by Sumi - ★★ Another one where I just wasn't feeling any sort of connection between the characters. Morris just seemed way too...disinterested in Fil, which made the sex scene a bit lackluster and boring for me. I did think this story was the most creative of the lot, though, but it didn't feel fleshed-out enough. The setting was a kinda vague. Who or what was this enemy they were fighting? How or why do certain people end up as Ordnances and Gunslingers? Magic? A technological virus? Etc., etc. With a little more detail and answers to those questions, I would have given this another star or two for creativity alone, even despite the lack of connection between the two MCs.
In the Pines by Lydia Nyx - ★★★ This was an okay story. I enjoyed the mystery and paranormal elements, but again, no real connection between the characters. And at one point I started getting a bit of a creepy/evil vibe about Flynn, and felt that he was just using Tyler, which made me not really care about the sad/bittersweet ending. And other than a very brief solo scene with Tyler and the gun, there was no erotic gunplay in this one.
Compromised Judgement by Penny K Moss - ★★ This was my least favourite one of the bunch. I found it very confusing, like I had been dropped into the middle of a story and really had to struggle to figure out the different organizations, who was who, and what was going on. And all the names were very difficult to keep straight. By the time I got to the end, I was mentally exhausted and didn't really care about the sex. (less)
