D.J. Schwenk is a 15 year old girl who has had to take on the weight of her family farm since her father has had to go to rehab for his hip. She does the milking twice a day, the haying with her younger brother, and the other farm chores. She lives in a small town called Red Bend, WI where football is the main focus. When she is pushed into training her school's rival quarterback, Brian, by the coach who is a family friend she finds an unlikely friend in him. Her summer is spent working the farm, training Brian, and talking with him about things she can't talk to her own family about because they don't talk about anything. When D.J. decides to try out for the football suddenly everyone has something to say and secrets are revealed.

Katherine is a high school senior. She meets Michael at a New Years Eve party and they start dating shortly after. They go out with friends, stay in, and take trips together but much of their relationship is based around sex. They promise to stay together and love each other forever.
Forever… was a good read. It is about teenagers and their first sexual experience, dating, and relationships. I didn't feel any connection with the characters as we went through the story. One of my biggest problems is actually, what I consider, the over-use of ellipses. There is an overabundance of them throughout the book and it stalls what the character is saying. There is some sexually explicit material and phrases in the book as it seems their relationship is based around sex. That is the reason the book has been challenged or banned.
I picked Forever... because it is one of the top highly challenged books on the ALA's banned books list. I can see why parents or teachers can have a problem with the book but I don't see why it should be banned. What is written in the book is less provocative than what kids are exposed to everyday. ...more

Paper Covers Rock is Alex's journal about the accidental drowning of his friend Thomas. His journal tells the story of what happened to Thomas, the events following his death, the life at an all boys boarding school and his own thoughts and suspicions surrounding his friend Glenn. There is only one person who suspects there is something more to the story Alex, Glenn, and Clay gave, Miss Dovecott, the new English teacher. Through her assignments she tries to bring Alex's natural writing talent out. During these assignments Alex reveals more than he planned. That is when Glenn hatches 'The Plan' and convinces Alex to help him.
The story centers around secrets, lies, deception, teenage lust (or love), and finding out the truth. The headings and subheadings fit in perfectly with the story and help it along. The characters are well written and you feel like you really get into Alex's head through his writing....more
