It was one of those books that I finished it and thought "Oh no, it's over!" Sad day for me indeed. For those that are lovers of all things Jane- Jane Austen and Jane Eyre, etc., I highly encourage this lovely contemporary novel sprinkled with al sorts of quotes and moments into the heroine's Sam's life. It is done very deftly and effortlessly and absolutely thrills a reader like me who gets all the delicious references that the author weaves in. The heroine Sam is someone who is a bit broken and closed off and hides behind all of the wonderful classical characters and books that have been the salve in her very tough life and upbringing. The real life people in her life have hurt her in grave ways and so this story is really about Sam learning how to love and move beyond a literary world and into the land of the real life world and love and risk and love those around her.
Wow this book, just really, really resonated with me. I know it was a re-telling of sorts of the classic novel Daddy Long-legs, which I have not read, but will now! But to see the character of Sam open up from a very closed off young lady to someone willing to reach out and help others was akin to watching a rose unfurl. It was really, really lovely.
Perhaps the most wonderful part of this book, is the fact that the reader is left with such hope. This young woman went on this journey where she was closed off from most people to being someone filled with hope for her future, not even sure of what it will completely look like. I appreciate that as a reader- I believe in Christian fiction especially we always need to have hope as a part of the underlying storyline. This book was a wonderful surprise and complete delight for me to read. I know it was coming from a debut novelist and I am keeping my eye on Katherine Reay and will march right out to buy her next book without delay!(less)
