This one truely has left me stumped and in the dust. If I ever become an author, I know that I'm going to get torn apart by my reviews of certain books. Lately, I've fallen into a certain slump of bashing novels because I seriously must have read atleast ten books in a row that was either boring, poorly written, or just straight bad. I almost just wanted to take a break from reading (Sacrilege I know right?) but I got this book for $7.99 at Walmart because sometimes I like to take a break from the innocence that you see from most young adult paranormal books. If anyone knows me well, it's that I'm NOT fond of romance novels infact I can count how many I've read on my hands but I will still read anything in hopes of it surpasing my expectations.
Let me tell you, Dark Peril DID suprise me. It had a lot of the stereotypical things but then again it IS suppose to be based on romance. For those of my YA friends let me brief you a little on the storyline. First,You don't need to read book #1 or any of the others to get the storyline! It is #22 but each book is its own short story based in the same world so dont worry!.
Dominic Dragonseeker is a Carpathian. What is a Carpathian? Hard to describe what exactly they are. They are beings that can heal fast, Immortal as in live forever but can die, need to drink blood to heal but can't drink too much or they turn Vampire, can stand in the sun but it irritates their skin, can shape shift into any animal, can fly, and sleep underground in dirt during day. To become a carpathian, you must drink their blood and then share yours. Sooo, in a way they are like a shapeshifting god-like vampire but not. Vampires ARE a part of the story, and they are people that have "Turned" and are much like the traditional evil vamps no edward cullens in this world but with evil magical powers? Like most romance novels (Draicon series), they have "life mates" that are their mate for life. They will be drawn together and if seperated will be miserable unless they perform this "bonding" ceremony. So in a way it's another arranged marriage/fate crap that I usually despise with a vengeance.
But with how short the story is and everything going on, it kind of works. Now Dominic and Solange have been meeting in their dreams for awhile, thinking they have dreamed up their "imaginary solemate" so get to know eachother's secrets quite quickly. Solange is a jaguar-woman a woman who can shift into a jaguar, one of the last of her kinds. The men fearing extinctions have beaten and raped the women to produce "cubs", Solange's father Broderick is the tyrant who is in charge of all the jaguar-people. He's been driven mad with lust and power, and kills any females who cannot make the shift (halflings). He kills her entire family, and now Solange seeks her revenge planning on dying in the end to avenge her family. Sickly, Broderick wants to keep her to produce a heir. Gross.
Dominic is also on a "suicide" mission, he is lonely and tired of living centuries with himself. He does not see the world in color, only hearing your lifemate's voice can awaken colors & emotions. There is a clan of vampires that is ingesting parasites so they can tell who has joined in their plot of destroying the Carpathians & their prince. Dominic ingests the parasites which will eventually kill him if he does not make the change (to vampire which he intends not too) and plans on killing the vampires dieing in the process. He wants to go to the "underworld" to find his soul mate.
Well, I'm sure you can guess the rest of the story. Dominic & Solange are indeed soulmates and discover this later on and their stories connect in an interesting way. There is more action in this book then I ever thought possible for an adult romance paranormal book. Not to mention the two sex scenes that will make you blush the shade of a fire truck.
There are so many things that I could pick apart such as Carpathians flying, the romance happening too fast, the parasites...yuck. If you read my status update there was a scene where he shoots the parasites out from his pores, TMI anyone? There were some parts that made me laugh. But overall I found myself enjoying it. How sick the jaguar-men were and even the romance between Dom & Solange grew on me. One thing that I cannot STAND right now with popular YA novels thats all the rage, its the damsel-in-distress syndrome. Solange IS a warrior and he loves her for it. BUT she also has a feminine side to her that he helps her accept as well. You can be a lady and still kick butt too. Dominic trusts her in battle, and while he worries sometimes, he assures her its because he cares about her. He doesn't second guess her abilities or send her out of battle so easily. There is actually a scene where one carpathian tells her to leave it's not a place for a woman, and he argues shes my lifemate and she can stay. Solange can also pick and choose her battles. Seriously? How nice is that! Uh oh, You got competition Rose Hathaway.
I love how they are both such strong characters that it upped my rating a star. Now if only Hush Hush or Mara Dryer had been like this and we wouldn't have had a problem! Christine Feehan is definately now listed as my favorite ROMANCE novel author. Who knows I think I might be checking out #23 very soon. It was a nice change of pace and I DEFINATELY recommend this book if your looking for something new and out of your category, it's a deal-breaker.

Wow I didn't see that one coming. Going to warn you guys this is a review of the ENTIRE series and it contains all kinds o**spoiler alert** 4.5 stars
Wow I didn't see that one coming. Going to warn you guys this is a review of the ENTIRE series and it contains all kinds of yummy spoilers, so don't say I didn't warn you. Let me start out by saying that the only reason I read this series was because I read Bloodlines and thought it would give me a better review of that book (which I found boring by the way). I avoided this series like the plague, thinking it was another House Of Night copycat. Don't get me wrong I liked HON but after Kalona well it just got wierd and has been slightly going downhill for me what with Zoey being able to do anything with little consequences. The whole time reading this series though I couldn't help comparing Rose to Zoey as the hero. Let me just say, Rose frickin rocks.
So finally I bought them expecting to give you the most venom-nasty review of my life expecting it to be a duplicate boring fangtastic edition of Vamps meets Harry potter. I've read so many vampire novels it'd make you sick to your stomach. It got to be annoying actually. Blue Bloods, Evernight, Twilight, House of Night, Sookie Stackhouse novels, Vampire Diaries, Vampires for Dummies 101 to name a few. Ok...well maybe not that last one. It got so bad that when I was reading Blood Promise and my boyfriend asked me what I was reading I felt embarrased and just gave him a look. All he said was "Vamps again?". True story. Literally they are everywhere however I believe a good book is a good book.
The truth is I really enjoyed reading them and that's what I'm basing it on. Sure, there were ALOT of grammar errors that I found and I hated that Mead kept repeating what happened in the previous books (as if I didn't read those?) over and over again. Explaining what Strigoi were and the fact that Dhampirs can't mate. The flashbacks. Certain things got on my nerves but overall the most things I loved the most were the characters in the story.
Vampire Academy: Your introduced to Rose and Lissa mostly. Rose is pretty badass, but whats funny about her is everybody thinks shes a slut but is really not? I found this confusing at first but really its kind of nice to have a hero who doesn't give a freak what anyone thinks about her. Even though at first she comes off atleast a little cocky (which she is in the first book) I have more respect for that then Zoey's claims of innocence and then goes and messes with everbody's feelings. I felt like she was more believable. Kinda bratty and immature in first book but real.
There is also Victor Daskov. In the first book I honestly didn't think much of him. Really. The only thing I found really funny was the lust charm. Seriously who would think of that? I also fell in love with Dimitri.
Frostbite: Things that stood out in this book. The Ski trip where you meet Adrian. Adrian is funny but I don't nearly like him as much as Dimitri (Sorry fans) but I do appreciate him. I guess I'm not into the pretty spoiled rich boy, but then he does have a specific charm. He brings bit of comedy to the series that wasn't there prior. I also love Christian. You see more of him here and get to know him better.
The Strigoi attack where Mason gets killed. I can't say that I mourned Mason since he seemed so...plain to me. We didn't really get to KNOW him you know? Before he died off. Dimtri and Rose get closer, and you get a glimpse into the real Dimtri. Again he's probably my favorite character of the series so I'm biased. There is more action in this one then the first.
Shadow Kiss: Probably my favorite book of the series. I loved this one. Rose grows so much from the events in this book that it is stagering. Where to begin? Moroi are finally stepping up to fight instead of hiding behind their guardians. The Line They come first bugs me but I know its how they were raised to believe.
Dimtri and Rose get closer. Hubba Hubba. He lets down his guard and you see just how cute their romance is. I think Dimtri loves Rose for how strong and courageous she is and not just that she has a nice rack which is nice considering the plotlines of YA's nowadays. (Oh what pretty eyes you have...now lets have sex etc.) I found it really romantic. I actually felt devastated when Dimtri got taken even though cheatingly I knew the ending already. It still made me sad.
Blood Promise: My second favorite. The beginning was really slow I admit it I think she drew it out for the good stuff. I loved meeting the Belikovs however that skirmish with Viktoria was kinda lame. Meeting Abe Mazur. Loved him!! Probably my second favorite character next to Dimitri to be honest. Dimitri as a Strigoi. My favorite scene in the series was when Rose finally sees him for the first time.
“Roza." His voice had that same wonderful lowness, the same accent . . . it was all just colder. "You forgot my first lesson: Don’t hesitate.”
This was A.W.E.S.O.M.E! Words can't even describe it. I loved Dimitri as a Strigoi almost more. He was somewhat like himself but twisted version of it. I loved that he still could be loving but terrifying at the same time. The scene where he is hunting her by the bridge is also my favorite. I loved this one and couldn't put it down. How hard would it be to have to hunt down the guy you love? Rose has guts I'll give her that. It also showed her as an addict, as weak or weakness which I liked. It showed even Rose can struggle sometimes.
Spirit Bound: This one was probably my least favorite. They go chase around Victor and Robert and try to figure out a way to cure Dimitri. There were two things I did like about this one. One the letters Dimtri sent Rose had me LOL'ing IRL. No joke. They went something along the lines of if I'd be dreaming it would be of you and I can't wait to choke the life out of your eyes. How romantic. How sad is it that I enjoy watching Dimitri act like a total pyscho.
Whats even more hilarious is how she tells Lissa so nonchalantly it cracks me up. Also I did like Adrian alot more in this book.
Last Sacrifice: After Dimitri is cured and what not, and he is being a complete prick. At first I wanted to fry him like a waffle, but then realized obviously if they were happy go lucky in the beginning what kind of story would that be? Still....I was so hoping he wouldn't go Edward Cullen on me which he kinda did. (The whole I-stay-away-cause-that-will-protect-you crap) But Rose Hathaway is no Bella Swan. After being rejected sadly, she fights back. Which is another reason why shes kickass. Honestly I can't stand the woman heros who sit a pine over a guy.
Also I know everybody is going to bitch about how she dumped Adrian but I kinda understand how she felt. I knew Adrian & Rose just didn't fit well together. It kinda makes sense that he should end up with Sydney. Dimtri made Rose grow as a person, Adrian was a type of guy she would have ended up with in VA not now. She changed and her and Dimitri just fit together. Its sad how he found out, but it was inevitable in my case. I'm shocked by how much emotion he has in the last book because during the series I never really felt like he treated her seriously it was mostly jokes? I don't know. Honestly, he just didn't strike me as someone Rose would end up with.
There is also the mystery of the Queens death. I loved that I couldn't even figure it out. Highly entertaining.
So that concludes my review for now. I'll embarrasingly add me to the list of squeeling fan girls of Dimitri Belikov anyday and now a Vampire Academy Fan.
Oh man. What is this world coming too. :) Rating: ...more
I'm a big fan of the series so I rate this a 4.3 stars. Most people loved the character Jack, sure he had his moments but (view spoiler)[I could tellI'm a big fan of the series so I rate this a 4.3 stars. Most people loved the character Jack, sure he had his moments but (view spoiler)[I could tell he was the bad guy from beginning (hide spoiler)]. He definately was more then Lend. For some reason, I couldn't get over the fact that it just seemed like he didn't have that much time for her or wasn't as into the relationship as the previous book. So far, this didn't have the action punch that paranormally did.
I preferred book #1 however this was not bad. Also I noticied a lot of people complaining that she acted out of character but people develop or change don't they? Overall, it was a good read. ["br"]>["br"]>...more
