This is where Fitzpatrick failed me and Taylor succeeded. <3
So I gave it 5 stars because of that. Just go get it. Now.
Yeah. That was pretty much my reaction at the end.
Words can't really even express how greatful I am that I actually went in and picked this up even though it felt awkward asking at the counter for a children's book. Was it just me or did it feel like it was geared towards adults too? Maybe because in the end we could all learn a lesson.
It was cute, creative, inspirational. I'm sure nothing I say is going to top some of the reviews, infact check out some of the reviews that touched me under who recommended it to me some friend reviews that I found really wonderful. The pictures I could gush about for days on end, they are stunning. It's like when you find an old vase thats a hundred years old but gorgeous. Who knew simple could be so dashing? The story itself is also powerful. Now I know most of you are going to say "I don't like sad stories" or "I heard it will make you cry". If anything this has in a wierd way a inspirational ending.
If your afraid to read this, please don't. I waited for awhile, and I'm glad I got the chance to read it. If you ever lost someone this will definately touch you. I lost my brother-in-law who was like my brother when I was 17 years old. Infact the night he got into his motorcycle accident, I was suppose to have lunch with him and my dad. My dad offered him to take his truck cause he thought it was going to rain and he refused. I refused to go over something petty vouching to stay at home watching a movie (passion of the christ ironically), because they were moving away and I was sad my sister was moving an hour away. When my dad got home though I told him to tell my brother that we'd all have dinner next week. I never saw him again. I didn't find out till 4 hours later.
He was working and couldn't make it to my nephew's 2nd birthday yesterday and was bringing home a gift for him. My nephew will never know his dad now and I suppose I always felt kinda guilty about throwing such a hissy fit about my sister moving on with her life. I was stupid.
ANYHOW, back to the point, I LOVED a monster's calls stories even though some of them I think we're kinda morbid and I think had a twisted logic. It told another truth as well. People are not always black and white. There is a grey area, whats so hard. You have to accept that you are a good person and you can be selfish too. It's okay to embrace the loneliness, grief, or whatever you are going through. To TELL the truth even if you don't want to admit it to yourself. I'm sure there is a lot that we don't want to admit to themselves.
The hardest person to tell the truth to is yourself. You can be your own worse enemy and critic. I love how it reminds me of Scrooge's three tales, I use to love that christmas story and this is a nice little twist. It's a book I'm sure is going to withstand time and become a classic. I even added this to my favorites shelf which is hard for me to do period. Even if you haven't lost someone, read this book. It really is a powerful simple tale. I'll be giving it to my sister when I go see her on thanksgiving, she reads like me and I think she will really appreciate this one.

I wanted to give this 2 stars because I rated Cresendo 1.5 stars also and this was atleast slightly better then that disaster but my rating system is off. I want to quickly say that this first book is MUCH better then that one. However, I still trash canned this book. Infact there was a lot that I found wrong with it that it gives me a headache just to write it all out. So I decided to have a little fun with my review. Pretty much my version of the story short and my reactions.
The Short Version
Nora: Eww Vee I HATE my lab partner he is like so pyscho. I swear he's stalking me. Vee: But he's SOOO HOT! look at his abs. YUM. Nora: I think I'll ask the teacher to move me but I know he won't. Because he believes in sexual harrasment and torturing young girls. Vee: Ya your right. Well you could just sleep with him just saying. Nora: Whine Whine Whine Patch: I'm a jerk. I'm super hot. Every girl loves me even though I'm a jackass. What more could you want? I talk down to you and flirt with you at the same time to mess with your head. Your so fun to pick on. Hey want to go out? Me: Dear Patch.... Nora: Sure only because I'm a dimwit. Marcie: I'm a s-l-u-t. A biotch with no feelings. Typical anorexic cheerleader stereotype yupyup.
Later on..... Patch: I want to kill you Nora, but I never take up all the opportunities I have. Instead I'll just make out with you because its fun and I'm a sick bastard. Nora: *drools*...no wait I hate you but your eyes are pretty. But lusting for you means I'm SO in love. *swoons* I can't stay away even when your pyscho. Me: Patch: I seem to have that effect on people *flexes like a big girly man* Vee: Ugh I think you should go out with Elliot and Jules. They are like so much hotter. Nora: Don't go anywhere near them!! Vee: What I can't hear you? Oh I'm in the car with them heading to a party in the city, we're drunk just picked up some tequila at the liquor store and my cat is sitting on the dashboard. I'm SUCH a good role model and friend, seriously girl you need to start listening to me you dumb girl. BYE!! [click] Nora's mom: Don't go out. Don't do anything. Infact let me be the overbearing protective mother stereotype I'm suppose to be. Nora: I'm going to do something really stupid and chase after her. I always get myself in these messes and I always do something stupid without thinking about it first. It's just who I am. Patch: I'm coming with you. Don't worry I'm badass nobody can touch THIS fallen angel. Me:
Later at the school..... Vee: OMG Nora you are missing out. I'm totally with these two guys that are awesome. We are playing "hangman" and I get to put this loop around my neck and swing from a tree sounds like fun right? Nora: *grows a brain* Wow...I think that sounds messed up. I'm coming in there for you! I know who the killer is. Patch: I'll just go in by myself and leave you unguarded. Because I know your going to listen and stay in the car because thats what anyone would do when their friend is in trouble. Jules: MUHAHAHAHAHA!! I'm such an evil mastermind. Even though I hide everytime patch is around so it's like SO obvious what I'm up too. Nora: Oh No!! He was faking and called me weak minded! He said I was easy to be mind-tricked and I have no spine. [crys] Me: Jules +1 Brownie Point Nora: *Gets trapped inside gym* Help me Patch! I can't handle this on my own. Patch: I'm here to save the day. Nora: *falls and dies* Patch: Noooooo! Well there's my human sacrifice. However I'm just going to not accept it because I can't live without her. Who else would I stalk for six months? Me:
Okay so that was a really lame imitation of the book. For those of you who read Becca Fitzpatrick's "Be Nice" post which I DID, I just want to say Becca I have nothing against you as a person, I do believe we have a right of freedom of speech. While the saying "If you have nothing nice to say don't say it at all" implies to a lot of cases, you have to take negative reviews with a grain of salt. I don't believe in limiting myself to what I say, and while I might poke fun at certain books there is usually reasons behind them. In fact if I was ever able to get a book published in the future, I would expect there to be scathing reviews. I think it would help get a wider view on WHY they didn't like this book, and where I could improve on in the future.
Hush Hush really wasn't as bad as some other books I have read and while I originally gave it 2 stars. I decided to mark it down .5 because I've given books 2 stars that were way better. My rating system is a bit...off. It wasn't unbearable, I could read through this which gives me some hope because that is one thing I can't stand is when the writing is completely boring. I even enjoyed Patch's quirky behavior somewhat in the beginning, I can handle a jerk but lately its been boys who go into the term "pyschotically bad" that I don't like. What I want to say is I think Becca has potential as an author, but I wasn't a fan of the Hush Hush series simply not simple because I'm biased and I'm getting a little sick of these fallen angel love stores [ Seriously I say this in ever review, Fallen angels are the NEW vampire. First its Werewolves, then faeries, then vamps now this! ] but that it just became what they all do, predictable.
I wanted my brain to think. Not guess the motivation behind the fallen angel. Not to know where this book ends. It's a big task to do. Still I find some pleasure from some predictable books but this one I did not. So to you becca, while I agree that there are some reviews that could scald even a dragon's hide and it might take it more then a little TOO far sometimes, most of them have the basis of why they say such things.
I think that this book will appeal to a much younger crowd and therefore I'm an old granny goat and just don't get it. I don't like Patch. I don't like Nora. Infact I'm not drawn to any of the characters which leaves nothing to me. If I can't connect or feel attached without wanting to choke somebody, then obviously the storyline becomes dust to me. Sorry but I just couldn't get into it.

Wow I didn't see that one coming. Going to warn you guys this is a review of the ENTIRE series and it contains all kinds of yummy spoilers, so don't say I didn't warn you. Let me start out by saying that the only reason I read this series was because I read Bloodlines and thought it would give me a better review of that book (which I found boring by the way). I avoided this series like the plague, thinking it was another House Of Night copycat. Don't get me wrong I liked HON but after Kalona well it just got wierd and has been slightly going downhill for me what with Zoey being able to do anything with little consequences. The whole time reading this series though I couldn't help comparing Rose to Zoey as the hero. Let me just say, Rose frickin rocks.
So finally I bought them expecting to give you the most venom-nasty review of my life expecting it to be a duplicate boring fangtastic edition of Vamps meets Harry potter. I've read so many vampire novels it'd make you sick to your stomach. It got to be annoying actually. Blue Bloods, Evernight, Twilight, House of Night, Sookie Stackhouse novels, Vampire Diaries, Vampires for Dummies 101 to name a few. Ok...well maybe not that last one. It got so bad that when I was reading Blood Promise and my boyfriend asked me what I was reading I felt embarrased and just gave him a look. All he said was "Vamps again?". True story. Literally they are everywhere however I believe a good book is a good book.
The truth is I really enjoyed reading them and that's what I'm basing it on. Sure, there were ALOT of grammar errors that I found and I hated that Mead kept repeating what happened in the previous books (as if I didn't read those?) over and over again. Explaining what Strigoi were and the fact that Dhampirs can't mate. The flashbacks. Certain things got on my nerves but overall the most things I loved the most were the characters in the story.
Vampire Academy: Your introduced to Rose and Lissa mostly. Rose is pretty badass, but whats funny about her is everybody thinks shes a slut but is really not? I found this confusing at first but really its kind of nice to have a hero who doesn't give a freak what anyone thinks about her. Even though at first she comes off atleast a little cocky (which she is in the first book) I have more respect for that then Zoey's claims of innocence and then goes and messes with everbody's feelings. I felt like she was more believable. Kinda bratty and immature in first book but real.
There is also Victor Daskov. In the first book I honestly didn't think much of him. Really. The only thing I found really funny was the lust charm. Seriously who would think of that? I also fell in love with Dimitri.
Frostbite: Things that stood out in this book. The Ski trip where you meet Adrian. Adrian is funny but I don't nearly like him as much as Dimitri (Sorry fans) but I do appreciate him. I guess I'm not into the pretty spoiled rich boy, but then he does have a specific charm. He brings bit of comedy to the series that wasn't there prior. I also love Christian. You see more of him here and get to know him better.
The Strigoi attack where Mason gets killed. I can't say that I mourned Mason since he seemed so...plain to me. We didn't really get to KNOW him you know? Before he died off. Dimtri and Rose get closer, and you get a glimpse into the real Dimtri. Again he's probably my favorite character of the series so I'm biased. There is more action in this one then the first.
Shadow Kiss: Probably my favorite book of the series. I loved this one. Rose grows so much from the events in this book that it is stagering. Where to begin? Moroi are finally stepping up to fight instead of hiding behind their guardians. The Line They come first bugs me but I know its how they were raised to believe.
Dimtri and Rose get closer. Hubba Hubba. He lets down his guard and you see just how cute their romance is. I think Dimtri loves Rose for how strong and courageous she is and not just that she has a nice rack which is nice considering the plotlines of YA's nowadays. (Oh what pretty eyes you have...now lets have sex etc.) I found it really romantic. I actually felt devastated when Dimtri got taken even though cheatingly I knew the ending already. It still made me sad.
Blood Promise: My second favorite. The beginning was really slow I admit it I think she drew it out for the good stuff. I loved meeting the Belikovs however that skirmish with Viktoria was kinda lame. Meeting Abe Mazur. Loved him!! Probably my second favorite character next to Dimitri to be honest. Dimitri as a Strigoi. My favorite scene in the series was when Rose finally sees him for the first time.
“Roza." His voice had that same wonderful lowness, the same accent . . . it was all just colder. "You forgot my first lesson: Don’t hesitate.”
This was A.W.E.S.O.M.E! Words can't even describe it. I loved Dimitri as a Strigoi almost more. He was somewhat like himself but twisted version of it. I loved that he still could be loving but terrifying at the same time. The scene where he is hunting her by the bridge is also my favorite. I loved this one and couldn't put it down. How hard would it be to have to hunt down the guy you love? Rose has guts I'll give her that. It also showed her as an addict, as weak or weakness which I liked. It showed even Rose can struggle sometimes.
Spirit Bound: This one was probably my least favorite. They go chase around Victor and Robert and try to figure out a way to cure Dimitri. There were two things I did like about this one. One the letters Dimtri sent Rose had me LOL'ing IRL. No joke. They went something along the lines of if I'd be dreaming it would be of you and I can't wait to choke the life out of your eyes. How romantic. How sad is it that I enjoy watching Dimitri act like a total pyscho.
Whats even more hilarious is how she tells Lissa so nonchalantly it cracks me up. Also I did like Adrian alot more in this book.
Last Sacrifice: After Dimitri is cured and what not, and he is being a complete prick. At first I wanted to fry him like a waffle, but then realized obviously if they were happy go lucky in the beginning what kind of story would that be? Still....I was so hoping he wouldn't go Edward Cullen on me which he kinda did. (The whole I-stay-away-cause-that-will-protect-you crap) But Rose Hathaway is no Bella Swan. After being rejected sadly, she fights back. Which is another reason why shes kickass. Honestly I can't stand the woman heros who sit a pine over a guy.
Also I know everybody is going to bitch about how she dumped Adrian but I kinda understand how she felt. I knew Adrian & Rose just didn't fit well together. It kinda makes sense that he should end up with Sydney. Dimtri made Rose grow as a person, Adrian was a type of guy she would have ended up with in VA not now. She changed and her and Dimitri just fit together. Its sad how he found out, but it was inevitable in my case. I'm shocked by how much emotion he has in the last book because during the series I never really felt like he treated her seriously it was mostly jokes? I don't know. Honestly, he just didn't strike me as someone Rose would end up with.
There is also the mystery of the Queens death. I loved that I couldn't even figure it out. Highly entertaining.
So that concludes my review for now. I'll embarrasingly add me to the list of squeeling fan girls of Dimitri Belikov anyday and now a Vampire Academy Fan.
Oh man. What is this world coming too. :) Rating: (less)

Most people loved the character Jack, sure he had his moments but (view spoiler)[I could tell he was the bad guy from beginning (hide spoiler)]. He definately was more then Lend. For some reason, I couldn't get over the fact that it just seemed like he didn't have that much time for her or wasn't as into the relationship as the previous book. So far, this didn't have the action punch that paranormally did.
I preferred book #1 however this was not bad. Also I noticied a lot of people complaining that she acted out of character but people develop or change don't they? Overall, it was a good read. ["br"]>["br"]>(less)
