Actually before I even READ this book, I looked at the reviews but its been sitting on my shelf for well, awhile now and I never got around to reading it. This sounds harsh to speak this way but I think most people bought it because of the author from Twilight.
HOWEVER, I was really turned off at first by the whole idea of Laurel being well, a plant. Much less a giant grotesque flower sprouting out of her back? There are MANY plotholes in this story and I'm pretty much forgiving person. I know most people like to say "but this would never happen" or "this isnt realistic" I'm usually saying it IS a fantasy book is it not who cares? But Wings really did beat the punch on this. The normal reaction a human would take is to be a bit more freaked out then David was about Laurel's blossom. It was WAY unrealistic how smoothly her life went. And of course shes frail, pale and beautiful nothing ever is wrong with her and she has two men who are dying for her affection.
Tamani....First of all, love the name. Love him, love him...did I mention I love him? I knew he didn't have a shot with Laurel but yet again I always love the guy that is second pick don't I? The famous line of I won't touch your blossom actually did make me laugh. Guilty. If he got his own book and they booted Laurel out I would so read that. As for the love triangle, come on you knew he never had a chance. Laurel is just straight SNOOZE-worthy anyhow.
After I got use to the idea of her being born from a seed the idea of her being a plant was kind of fun in the fact that it is a UNIQUE idea. It then delves into a more detailed reason of why she lives with her parents. Unfortunately it was pretty basic infact the whole plotline was pretty simple. Nothing really fantastic about it. There were no shocking moments, suspense, cliffhangers or anything other then obviously laurel's past and her abilities as a faery are yet to be discovered. Hopefully Spells book #2 really goes into this. Overall, it wasn't AS bad as I was expecting it to be, it was a decent enough book. But it didn't leave me with wanting to know more or not already assuming what is happening next. In three words.

The beginning however goes really slow and it can take awhile before the plotline really starts to pick up so don't judge this book by the first 3 chapters. It reminded me of like a children's fairytale but in a good way. The only thing that kept getting confusing was when (view spoiler)[she kept switching to different sides, it reminded me of rebecca black which royal family should i take? It was obvious her humanity side (kaers sister) loved Rokan. Even though she barely spoke to him it seems like. Wierd (hide spoiler)]
Otherwise it was a good read. Not the worst but not the best. I do enjoy the fairytale aspect also the MISTWOOD where the woods are pretty much alive is what intrigued me the most. Isabel was an ok character it could have elaborated more on her but I'm always picky with character development. 3.5 stars =) ["br"]>["br"]>(less)
OK..Now before you think I'm a hater and go ballistic on me I'm going to explain WHY I gave this book a two star rating instead of three stars which was what I originally planned on giving it. I will have some spoilers but I will block those out for those of you who have not read it.
First off let me start out by saying I loved the first book of this series. Especially since it got review from PC Cast one of my fav authors, I was excited to get into this series. I'm definately pro-logan of course, something about the guy that always gets shafted that I'm drawn too or whatever the reason. However, I was willing to give Zachary a chance and even liked him somewhat in book one. NOW, in Shift we go deeper into why the actual shift happened, what happened at newgrange with Aura's mother, who her actual father is and all the romance drama just comes between. I REALLY did enjoy finding out more about newgrange and Eowyn the only character that really still has a mysterious vibe and doesn't annoy me at this point.
In the book, Aura finds out that (view spoiler)[ her father is a ghost (hide spoiler)] big shocker? I wasn't that suprised however when she (view spoiler)[finds the missing pages of her mother's journal pages (hide spoiler)] from Eowyn the actual shift interested me more then the drama between Her vs. Logan vs. Zachary. Let me start off by saying I REALLY wanted to like Zach but if you read the book then you know how he gets incredibly whiny and annoying. There are parts of the book that literally had me saying WTF!!?? Aura are you braindead? This is why Zach is the most retarded guy on the planet. He (view spoiler)[ asks Aura to prom but then when she confesses that she decides to be honest that when logan became solid on the winter solstice they almost did it. (hide spoiler)] Which to be honest is understandable. Then (view spoiler)[ He un-asks her to the prom like a child, throws a tantrum, then when they meet up again they make out and she asks him back to prom. He tells her he asks Becca already and that if he un-asked her it would make him look bad? (hide spoiler)] I mean can anyone say HYPOCRITE? like its ok to un-ask you but not her cause he'll be the bad guy? But its ok to hurt the girl you supposedly "love" AND go out with another girl. If I were Aura I would be like its either me or NOBODY.
Does Zach take this as a hint? OH NO...it gets worse. Zach (view spoiler)[ goes to prom with becca and plans on supposedly never talking to her afterwards. Keeping Aura and Zachs new relationship "Secret" more like so he can look at all his other options? Hmmm...anyways. So then he dances with her once and pretty much flirts with multiple girls at school, then leaves with becca. Aura takes logans little brother to the dance as a friend but in the limo she gets a phone call from zachs phone. She hears them making out (or who knows what) and then Auras friend texts his phone so he gets busted. So basically later on in this book his only excuse from the just of it is any guys excuse caught cheating, oh I couldn't get over you/i just wanted to lose myself and not think about anything. It gets better. Aura buys all this crap bullshit cause he says I love you. Anyone can say those words cant they? Heres an example :
Zach : I'm really sorry I almost screwed somebody. I couldnt help it I wanted to lose myself because I missed you so much
Aura: I'm mad at you *swoon* but ur so hot in a kilt.
Zach: We should make love on this towel right now. *drool* it would make everything better. I love you
Aura: Aww..wait u love me? oK well then its ok im not mad *kisskisskiss*
(view spoiler)[Then tells her about how he wanted to sleep with her at a castle hotel room and how romantic it would be. I can't believe she lost her virginity to this jerk as well. Then after it happens, he calls BECCA the girl he almost slept with to pick them up. OK so it could have been their last resort but seriously your going to that extreme?
I apologized to Zach fanatics out there but after this book I'm more pro-logan then ever. Atleast for Logan he did not eye other females, he truely was about aura always. And is always there when she needs him not running away to "protect" her bullcrap. I will still buy Shine to see HOW the series surely out of the curiosity about the shift and her mother's past history. Anything else purely just makes me wish you had a stronger, wiser main character. But that can obviously never happen. Although I'm sure Zach is going to remain faithful and so in love in the next six months away from Aura. I have no doubt about that HAH!.
And that is why I gave my 2 stars. Disapointed is the word for it. If you read my long essay kudos to you =)

Honestly I can't really get very detailed with this review as far as details because I read it awhile ago, but I will say this. It definately was way more entertaining then I thought it would be.
A very spiritual book I want to say. About the afterlife and what happens after death. Your soul. What it means to die and values on the belief that when you "die" your never really gone that your soul is immortal. It kind of reminded me of The Immortal series ALOT, but condensed into one book. That and it was more realistic, no making tuliups appear out of thin air or unrealistic death defying romances either.
I enjoyed this book quite a lot which means its still sitting on my shelf. That says something because there the only ones that I could read again in the top 50. It was just different, and it was a nice fresh of air from the standard books I was reading. Vampire/werewolf love stories, faeries, demon & angels get kinda old after awhile. It touched me on a personal level.
If your looking for something more on the spiritual/mystery side, pick it up. You won't be dissapointed. It was an amazing journey.(less)
"I know that we are young and I know that you may love me. But I just can't be like this anymore, Alejandro." Lady Gaga
This is what I get for setting my hopes up too high before ever starting to read a book. You are setting yourself for failure I tell you. Now there were acouple things I adored in "GOFAT" (Teehee!) that I can list. The world. Humberto. Elisa's "Imperfections". Alejandro's son, Rosario. Lord Hector. Those were great features that actually made me add the .5 in there. However everything else just didn't appeal to me. I'll explain why. I actually loved reading about Elisa's wedding. Her first meetings with Alejandro. How nervous and insecure she felt were understandable. I didn't like how it portrayed just because shes fat, all she thinks about is coconut scones and stuffing her face with food to make herself feel better. But I loved the fact that they made a hero that was not gorgeous and without weakness. We have a lot of those and while they are great (Rose Hathaway) they are not as realistic as Elisa in most parts. I love how she grows stronger through out her journeys in the desert. How quickly she accepts her fate as leader and the fact that when this happens she realizes a few things about her husband (jerkface). I didn't care for Alejandro at all although the ending of the story I hated him a BIT less. It shows people have the ability to change. I didn't like how just because she undergoes a physical change she suddenly found all this new confidence and suddenly everyone wants her? Ugly duckling anyone? Its funny because at the beginning of the story I thought she would be with Lord Hector. I think he saw her for who she was like Humberto and even the King noticed that. Can't wait to see how that relationship develops. OH Humberto...I can't even get into that. What she did to him shall never be forgiven. It was like what happened to Finnick in hunger games where I'm sure many people share my pain. He was one of the only reasons that kept me reading. Besides those two, the only other character I liked was Rosario. He also saw Elisa for who she truely was and the only person that recognized her. Besides I kinda felt bad for him. He was a spoiled brat correct, but only because people never really gave him much respect or attention. It's strange because I usually don't like little kids in fantasy stories. Also the world was really creative. The Amnimagi? Or sorcerers were very cool. The battle. However, most of the reason why I made my rating SO low was how the story was written. I hate when authors try and make their writing like Lord of the Rings style. It doesn't make you elegant, it just puts them to sleep. Eragon has long travels through its pages but it does it in a way that is tasteful adding enough in there that keeps the reader still tuned in. I felt like half of GOFAT I was lulling to sleep and occasionally got a slap across my face that woke me up. There was also the GODSTONE. Not only is it wierd that god shines a light down and puts a diamond into your belly button but he talks? with you through it. It turns cold when in danger and warm when he's happy. W...T.....F.
Pretty much explains your reaction to it. I'm not religious what so ever so maybe that has a big part in it. In alot of cases when Elisa gets in trouble, she prays. For it is "gods will" that she do great things. Not simply because she wants too. It left me very uncomfortable with god being talked about obsessively in this book. There was also the whole stone-in-my-belly-button thing where people wanted to steal her stone for power? It reminded me of Wings where faeries were plants and she grew a flower out of her back. Just really freakin wierd. Again there were things that I liked about it and that I hated. So I feel pretty good with my rating. I recommend it for people who are highly religious or like really wierd fantasy books. But it had so much more potential. For those who want to read it just because Veronica Roth reviewed it I have to say this. It doesn't even come close to Divergent. Rating:

Image above is one of the best witch movies ever. Can you tell I'm a sucker for witch stories? I'm not talking about Harry Potter while good is about controlled magic in schools purely for educational purposes and riding a train out to a mysterical castles. I'm talking about bad witches and teenagers who go to a real human school, the good old fashion kind.
I admit that I finally decided to pick up The Secret Circle because the show on CW had already started and I wanted to read the book before watching the show. I'm a huge fan of LJ Smith even though I think her writing is pre-mature sorry to say but I love how she easily blends paranormal into history believably and of course Vampire Diaries! What I loved about this book was the story behind it. An island where the witches of Salem ran to find refuge, where they live ontop of a certain road. All houses on that road house the descendants of these witches and everyone else are descendants of the servants or passerbys that were let into the island.
In the beginning, Cassie makes a few enemies of these witches. It reminds me of The Craft which of course, is like one of my favorite witch movies of the century. The characters are all pretty bland, however I seem to like Nick and Faye best. Faye really helped improve everything since the writing was a little too simple for me. She knows what she wants and she goes for it, and I really wish that she wrote more about her backstory in here. Another thing that irked me was Cassie's obsession with Adam. It was embarassing. I know the whole spiel about them being made for eachother in the stars or what not, but it was like she saw him once basically said Hi. Then couldn't stop thinking about him much less the next time she sees him she tells him shes in love with him?
If that really happened, any guy would be busting out the restraining order pronto. Crap, even I would. It was just really unbelievable and I hate the "love at first sight" love stories. Really its just so not cute for me, it ruined the whole idea of any love story. Also the fact that Diana was his girlfriend its just got bad news stamped all over it.
Overall, I did like it despite its flaws. Of course there are many plotholes and things to overlook, but like I said I'm biased because of my love for witches. I hope Cassie decided to drop the Adam thing, and go for Nick. He just seems more badass in the book.
