STANDALONE or SERIES. Standalone. Just one book.. Though I would like it if she would release more books (about this main character or another).
WHY this BOOK. I noticed it on NetGalley and the description sounded interesting. A bit of a mystery with some paranormal powers.. in a Tudor-themed castle. Count me in !
FIRST THOUGHTS. I really enjoyed this book. No it was not the most original or deep plot.. and even though most of it was kind of predictable, there were some things I did not expect. But most of all, it was a very funny read and it made me laugh out loud a couple of times. That made it all worth it.
PLOT. So, the story is about Jules, a sixteen-year-old with a special gift. Only, she does not really perceives it as a gift, but more as a curse, one that she calls the “Psychic Tourette’s Syndrome”. Meaning that (mostly at awkward times) she blurts out weird sounding prophecies and make no sense at the moment. Because of that, most people in her town find her a freak and she feels as one. But ! She gets the opportunity to work at Tudor Times, a castle in her town, playing the role of the Maid of Kent. Who turns out to be a crazy nun. Which seems rather fitting ^^ But.. on her first day she finds a body in one of the secret passages she stumbles on ! But when she comes back with back-up, the body has disappeared and nobody seems to believe her.. So it is up to her to prove that it really happened, and when another body turns up later things get even more weird ! Luckily, she has the help of her crush Grayson to solve this mystery. Only problem being that the killer found out she knows more and is after her now too ! Who is left to trust ? And… can she find the killer before he gets to her ?
This was a fast paced book that kept me on the edge of my chair. I was so into the mystery, wanting to know where the body was (and was there really a body) and who killed them. At the ending, when everything was revealed.. I was completely surprised, I did not expect that person to be the killer at all !
I loved the setting in the Tudor-themed castle. With all its little secret passages and hiding rooms, knights in shining armor *sight*.. I loved how everything was authentic and they wanted to give the visitors an as real experience as possible.
I also really liked how she shaped the way of her premonitions expressing themselves. It made for some really funny moments, but most of all it was very mysteriuous. At the moment she yells it, you have no idea what it is about, and try to think how the clue fits in.. and then later on, it makes complete sense ! Loved that.
Oh ! And I really liked how she put it all in the NOW. Using references to The Princess Bride (never read it, but it made me interested in it) and Taylor Swift.
I really adored her writing style, it was so easy to read and you fell right into it.
ROMANCE. Ohhhh how cute and adorable they were ! Of course, you knew right from the start they would end up together, not much to guess about that, but it was just so cute !! because she perceives herself as a freak, she thinks nobody would want her.. while in the meantime he is totally crushing on her as well !! Though I did wonder why he stayed with Bree if he was so into her, later on that got clear as well. Only thing left to do was wait for them to confess. Ohh it was just sooo charming ^^
CHARACTERS. I really liked the main character Jules. She was so quirky and just hilarious ! She made me laugh and snort so many times !! But also completely adorable in her love for Grayson. A person like her is just a perfect main character to have in a book, funny and full of life. Even though her life had not been perfect, she doesn’t get depressed or whiny, but moves on and gives it another try. Loved that.
I also liked the owner of the castle, Hank Bacon, very much. Even though I had my suspicions about him, he really looked out for Jules. Though he is kind of a weirdo walking around everywhere in King Henry clothes and talking like they did in the past. I had appreciation for his thoroughness, making sure that everything in the castle was as authentic as possible.
But most of all I loved her family. Even though she is not the most normal person (but then again, who is) she had a great support system. Her mother loves her very much, and her grandmother was just adorably weird. And her best friend Cami is there for her as well, all believing in her and trying to help her. I loved that.
FAVORITE QUOTES. “You have to, Jules.” “I know.” “It really is the perfect job for you.” “Minus the nun habit and the dead body.” “Duh. So, what’s your plan?” “I thought I’d put on a deerstalker cap ans an Inverness cape and walk around with a pipe in my mouth.” “That ought to be effective.” “I think the word you’re looking for is ‘elementary’, my dear Watson.” . “I’m calling Hank,” she tells me after I give her my version of the whole disappearing dead body thing. “What? Why? What do you expect him to do?” “Well, people are dying indisde his castle, surely he ought to do something?” “Don’t worry, I’ll be fine. Gran gave me a stun gun.” “Oh God. Please tell me you’re joking.” “Nope. I’m all set.” . “I look up at him, and my heart gives a funny little flutter. “The virgin hides the truth!” I yell in his face. “You don’t say?” “I pretty much wish I hadn’t.” .
FINAL THOUGHTS. Ohh I had so much fun with this book !! Though I do have to say, this is not a book you should be reading because you are looking for something deep and complicated. This is a light and funny read and you should treat it as such. That being said, I had a lot of fun reading this book, it is a nice in-between story and you should definitely give it a try if you have the chance. So, I would like to give it 4 Freyja’s and I hope she will write more books in the future ! ...more

STANDALONE or SERIES. Standalone, unfortunately.
WHY this book. I was looking for what to read next.. and a friend of mine recommended this a while back on Goodreads. The plot sounded interesting and something different, with no fantasy or supernatural beings in it for a change. So why not !
FIRST THOUGHTS. I really liked this book !! It made me sooo angry and frustrated sometimes !! It was a very addictive read and I finished it in no time ! I’ve been reading mostly fantasy books lately, so this was a nice change as well. No looking out of monsters, or at least, a different kind of monsters. It was really exciting too, very mysterious and intriguing. I kept rooting for the main all the way through !!
PLOT. I really enjoyed the plot, some things were a bit predictive, but I got surprised a couple of times as well. It had a good pace, not too fast, but not too slow as well. The more I got towards the ending, the more intriguing it became. I did not know who was good and who was bad, and I kept second-guessing. Love that in a book !!
I really appreciated that it was not only about the way the military is very biased about females, but because of how those men have a strong sense of how things are supposed to be, a lot of other people are being discriminated too. Like gays in the military for example. It gave a good picture about how things should be modernized.
SETTING. It was set in a military school, which I do not read a lot about.. But it come across very real ! A lot of terms were thrown around that I didn’t know very well, but the writer explained almost everything. Turns out, that the author has been to military school herself ! How awesome is that ! And it really showed, because everything seemed so realistic and true ! Mainly, all the rules and protocols, the way you bond as a team.. it seemed like I was right there with them and suffering among them, just amazing ! And not just school with military stuff, but the whole secret society was very cool too ! It kept me wondering who was in it, who to trust, who not to trust.. very exciting !
ROMANCE. Yes there was romance, some tension filled scenes, but it kept more on the background. As a first-year Worm, our main character was the lowest of the lowest and not allowed to date. It could be seen as an easy way to climb up on the ladder, which is against all regulations. And our main really wanted to obey the rules and succeed, so except for a couple of kisses not a lot happened. But that was okay ! Because it fitted with Sam’s personality and her motivation to make through the year.
EMOTION. I felt so much with this book, so much ! Most of it being anger (stupid men and their stupid prejudices), but also a lot of frustration that they didn’t give up. She tried so hard, she did better than most of her platoon, she proved herself so many times and still they wanted her out because she is a female. So mean !! Some swooning too, over her drill.. *sight*.. And I loved the comradery, how the guys in her platoon started out disliking having a female, but the further they got, she did probe herself to them and they accepted her. It felt so great she had allies !!
CHARACTERS. I LOVED the main character. I know her name is Sam, but I think more of her as Mac though. And Mac is everything a strong independent woman should be like. She was always thinking of the greater good, kind of stubborn, but not in a way that got herself almost killed (oh well.. yeah but that was not because of her stupidity). She knew when to give in and let others help her because she needed it, not because she was weak, but because she could not make it otherwise. She kept to her principles, and damn, I would have kicked the hell out of those guys for treating her that way. She had an aspiring amount of self-control. Some characters that I liked in the beginning, betrayed her, and even though they made up in the end, I could not like them again. Only the ones that were there the entire time and didn’t stop protecting her. Like Ritchy and the other guys from her platoon. I LOVED Drill. Like Mac, he put his principles before the possibility of a romance and I respected that.
I HATED Matthews with the fire of a thousand suns. He was so mean, evil even. He put her through so much, because of what ? The stupid society didn’t like females ? Screw that, she is a human being, and you don’t treat people that way. Especially at the end, what he did was unforgivable. He should have been punished way harder !! And Evers is an asshole too !!
THE BAD. I really loved this book, but I did not like that, to me, it feels like it is not finished yet. What is going to happen in the next year ? I have questions !!! Some things were left kind of open and I dislike that.
FAVORITE QUOTES. “You are not a drop in the ocean. You are an ocean in a drop.” . “Alpha, lower your left hand onto the hand of the recruit buddy to your left. Lean your shoulder into him. Let him support you.” And just like that, Drill is there, a rock to lean against. I lean into his shoulder, easing some of the pain. I support Nix to my right, his body heavy on my shoulder. We all shake, we all sweat, including Drill, who did every exercise with us tonight. “Now listen to the words of the song. You are Alpha. You eat together, breathe together. You live together and you die together. Never forget that. Feel the weight of your recruit buddy. Know that you are holding him up. Feel the weakness in your own muscles. Know that you would not still be up if your recruit buddy wasn’t helping you. This year is all about you becoming a unit.” His last words about unity echo the chorus of the song. My eyes sting, and Nix, who never cries, no matter how bad the smoke shows get, sniffles to my right. I’m not alone in this moment and Drill is fully responsible. “Thank you,” I whisper as the music fades.”
FINAL THOUGHTS. I had a lot of fun (and frustrations) reading this book. It taught me some new things and I always like that. It was different and exciting and full of mystery. I would totally recommend it to you, it is a great read if you like some mystery and feeling angry haha. I have a big sense for injustice and it kept feeding me throughout most of the book. But when she succeeded I had also a big happy feeling, like HA SCREW YOU SHE DID IT ANYWAY !!! So yeah, I would like to give this book 4.5 Freyja’s ! I’m keeping half a Freyja because I missed some closure at the end. ...more

Stand alone or series: Stand alone
Why did I read this book: Because I liked the writer. Becca Fitzpatrick is the writer of the Hush Hush series, which is one of my favourites. So when she came with a new book I had to read it.
Cover impression: Cool. Dark and mysterious. I like it. Let it snow, let it snow..
Review Soo.. I did not know what to expect when I started reading this book. It has been a couple of years since I read Hush Hush and from what I made out of the summary this wasn’t a paranormal book. Which is fine, I like mixing it up. Reading too much about the same topics after another is something that I like to prevent.
At a certain point they all start to look alike, maybe because I have read a lot, or after so many is already been done by other authors it gets harder to be original.. I don’t know.. But it sucks haha.
But back to business.. Black Ice. I am going to be completely honest.. during the first part of the book I had a couple of moments were I wanted to put the book down and start something else. The main character, Britt, was VERY annoying. The whole point when reading a book is getting along with your main character. Of course you do not have to agree with every decision they make, but at a certain level you have to like them and relate to them. Britt I did not like at the beginning. She was self-absorbed and let other people take care of her. Some decisions she made where based on childish egoism and her choice in friends was absolutely ridiculous.. I mean, why was she friends with Korbie??? She was a complete tampered bitch who made everything a competition.. I strongly dislike those kind of people !! Blegh.
And then Calvin.. I really did not see the appeal.. she keeps talking about him as if they had this amazing relationship and were perfect. But the more she shares about their relationship, the more I got to doubt how much it meant.. I mean, he didn't even want other people to know they were together ! He was kind of controlling her and mean.. Putting her down like she was just some kind of a weak person. Like in that store ! And she just kept thinking about him and how awesome he was... How he was going to save her blabla.. That did not do it for me, no points for Britt in her taste in men..
But during the story our main character got more character (Ha) and started to think beyond her own little petty world. She acted smart and started depending more on her own skills. Skills that saved her own life and that of the others. Go Britt ! And well, because of that I decided to finish this book.. and because it was getting more mysterious and I wanted to know what happened !
I loooooved Mason/Jude from the beginning. How awesome that he came to the rescue when he did not even know her ! It made me instantly like the guy. Every woman wants her knight in shining armor haha. When they met later on, you knew from the start something was up. I mean, he gave up pretty obvious hints that they should leave.. maybe he should just have explained some things that were happening and this whole situation could have been prevented ! Boring book it would have been that way haha. But still, you noticed he was the good guy and that they would end up liking each other.
*Sigh* Is it just me or is it almost impossible to be surprised who will end up with each other? It is sooooooo obvious every single time ! The guy is introduced and it is instantly yep.. that’s him.. they are going to end up with each other..
Even though it was to be expected, I liked how their relationship developed. It was not an instantly love, they took their time and got to know each other better under some of the worse conditions. But well, you really see how someone is during those kind of times right. Their real personality comes up.
I did not like Shaun at all.. It was obvious from the beginning that he was up to no good. And not in a sexy, bad boy way, but more in a psycho, keep away way.. His character was kind of shallow and did not have much development.. Kind of shocked that he got killed so suddenly! Even though it was to be expected in some way, I DID NOT expect he got shot so suddenly in cold blood.. See ! Some plot twists I did not see happening !
I did miss some things though.. like what happened to Bear?? He came after them later.. but then what ? Plot hooooole.. And I kind of missed what happened with Korbie and family afterwards.. I mean their father was a mayor child abuser, he kind of made Calvin into a serial killer.. and nothing on how that ended.. Or how Korbie took everything.. Of course she was stupid child.. but well.. I like to wallow in their self-pity.. makes me feel better haha.
And well.. I dislike that Calvin got away with murder in some way.. because he tried to off himself he damaged his brain and probably lost most of his mind.. So he will not really be punished for what he did, because he’s not conscious. But well… It is sad in some way of course, if he had a normal childhood he would probably never done these things.. See ! That’s why it suckes that you do not know how the Versteeg family ends up!
I did love the ending between Jude and Britt. It was smart and wise to take some time apart after everything that happened, to get some time of their own. And you see for yourself, when two people really belong with each other they will end up together anyway.. How beautiful that he kept waiting for her at that beach.. so romantic !!
So all in all it was a good book, I was entertained. The main characters made some developments and you could see them change and get stronger during the story. I liked that. You kept guessing what was going on and who murdered those girls. And why they were murdered.. I liked that for a change it was not a paranormal read, she mixed it up. I liked that as well, some authors stay with what they have written and do not explore in other directions.. I liked that she took that step and went for something different. So I think that I give this book 3.5/4 Freyja’s.. Do not know for sure if it is good enough for 4 Freyja’s.. I do think I would recommend this book though.. mixing it up ! Haha. And I am a sucker for happy endings.. ...more
