I did it! I finally finished it, and it's not because I didn't enjoy it because I did. Granted, I found the beginning a bit slow but I got into it fairly quickly.
I really liked Alice Pung's writing style, and the "reveal" was nicely done - it took me quite by surprise but it was beautifully done, so that after my "what???!!!!" moment, I could clearly see how it fit in so perfectly.
Rating: 3.5/5 stars. I think you should give it a go because you may well enjoy it and take something away from it like I did.
Also, the extra entry at the end was (wow) beautifully written :OO And I loved the lesson that Lucy learns about leadership, how you have to learn to follow first, as well as the lovely quote by Aung San Suu Kyi - "if you have enough inner resources, you can be by yourself for a long time and not feel smaller because of it". ...more

Wow, it's quite significant to me that this was the first novel I've read after my book slump that lasted...well, pretty much an entire year. I know, it's quite sad. After this, I don't know if I'll return to my slump or not but hopefully I will continue to read, even though other commitments will mean that I won't have the time to read as much as I'd like to anymore.
I had seen the cover of this book on Goodreads for quite a while before I read it. I remember seeing it in an issue of the Goodreads newsletter in my email, and thinking, 'wow this sounds really interesting! I should check it out.' I had forgotten about it for a few months, and then one day I saw a girl from my school reading it. So that motivated me to finally look for it and read it! I do not regret my decision, because it was a very fun read that made me feel all mushy and nice and rainbows and Levi and unrealistic expectations of college guys. Haha.
I have this list of quotes in my ereader, and they are all the cute moments between Cath and Levi that made me smile and giggle and squeal internally. There were two pages of quotes, if I remember correctly (I know). If you're thinking about picking this up, go for it! I highly recommend it :) And I will definitely be reading 'Eleanor and Park' next. Oh, how could I forget?! I love how this is centered around Cath's love for fanfiction, because I used to be quite an avid reader of fanfics, and still am even though I have switched fandoms. So that was cool, and was part of the appeal when I first heard about this book.
Also, I think it could go into my 'favourites' but it's probably due to the fact that there were too many delays while reading it to fully enjoy it in the moment. I remember being in the middle parts and absolutely LOVING it, but then I just got tired of it and so just stuck to reading a chapter or two every day, or every other day. So I guess the excitement was lost somewhere in the middle, but it definitely deserves its 4 stars. Okay, I've rambled enough! To anyone who actually bothered reading this far, then I hope you're having a great day :) I've definitely missed this - writing reviews on Goodreads! And also sorry if none of this makes sense, which I'm sure is the case :P...more

To be fair, it didn't have an original premise or any spectacular characters but the writing was captivating and I grew to like Freia and her parents. I admit I laughed a lot while reading this. I would've given it a higher rating but I am stricter with it now because otherwise all books would be rated 4 or 5 stars haha. Obviously since February my reading tastes have changed, but this book brought me out of my 4-month reading slump and for that I am grateful! This was a completely random pick from the library shelf from looking at the spine, which drew me in. I highly recommend it if you are looking for a fun, light read with many laugh-out-loud moments :)
