I found the characters to be interesting and the story wasn't so predictable that I didn't want to read. They were also fairly realistic. Haddix did a good job of not romanticizing immigrant life in the Lower East Side.
I would recommend this book to everyone to read.(less)

The only thing that I did not like was the fact that the story felt like it picked up in the middle and then you were told what led up to it in pieces. Usually I don't mind odd timelines, but this just didn't work for me.(less)

The premise has me thinking and intrigued and I want to read more. I can understand completely why this book is so popular now. Dystopian novels are by far my favorite and this category fits into it perfectly. I cannot wait to see how the second book starts because of the way this book ended.(less)

The sentence structure was awkward in a lot of places.
That being said, I love the idea. The creatures mentioned and the alien races are intriguing. The idea, although overdone and not new at all, still kept me reading.
This author could do with a better editor and a more developed writing style.
The movie was actually better in my opinion, although I hate that it left out the fire and the whole part about Mark James. Also, the hayrides were different, changing an integral part of the story.
I will be reading the next book, just because I have to know what happens.(less)

There were quite a few stories that made me sad, but I am a cat person. I thought the author was a little presumptuous putting her story as the last one, but it was a cute story.

There were awful parts (like the entire chapter of the opera) and then there were some parts that were good. My biggest issue is the way the book is told. The author makes it out like plural lives and this community is the worst thing ever. You can tell that she is not a fan of it. It made the book awkward to read in places because of her major dislike. It was very preachy. I wish there could have been balance. She didn't necessarily have to go out and tell everyone to be a sister wife, but I feel like this book just had too much of an agenda.
The characters were true to their ages, and true to the way that they would feel, though. She did not make them unrealistic. (less)

I had grown up with the story-it's in almost every television show, but I didn't really get the depth of it until now. I also now understand why people can't stand to read Dickens.
