First read through - I really didnt like it. It felt rushed and bitty. Hated the lack of "Sookie - Eric" stuff. Felt it was quite contradictory in places and that characters and their lives were dropped in and out rapidly with no real rhyme or reason.
Then, thinking how it will all need tying together in one or two more books I re-read the book. (view spoiler)[ Eric & Sookie: Well, what on earth is the girl playing at - yes things are odd but she's just ignoring it all and pretty much taking the man for granted. He's still hinting about her coming to live with him, coming to work for him if Merlottes closes down - heck he even pretty much told her he'd thought about turning her so they could be together forever (and all that despite the "Queen of Oklahoma" marriage hanging over him - that he doesnt tell Sookie about until close to the end. No wonder he was pissed off with her after the big battle and hurt her when he took blood. All she seems to have done this book is hurt him with her comments and thoughtlessness. Wonder what Eric would think if he knew she'd crawled into Bill's daytime hiding place naked. Hmm... she doesnt deserve him. Plus - she barely seemed to care that Eric and her Fairy God-Father (Niall) had Terry watching out for her and how this affected him. It was mentioned once then brushed aside. Was this the Terry story being tied up, or will it come up in the next book? Overall though, I have to say Eric seemed to lack the essential "Ericness" that we've come to love. Hope this is just down to my interpretation after 2 reads as it did pick up the 2nd time round, plus I love the Eric moments probably best of all. Pam: Gotta love Pam. She still seemed to have her spark although the Miriam storyline seemed to come from nowhere. Loved how Eric stopped her telling Sookie what was going on. Just left me wondering if the official "Didnt turn her in time" will actually prove false in the next book, or if any comeback on not being allowed to turn her "love" into a vamp will be in the next book and cause a strain. Bill(& Judith): Blah Blah Blah... quickly tied up the lose end of Judith. Not impressed as feel that could have had quite the run. Bill seemed to come out with some stuff to Sookie that really doesnt fit with his usual character, and Sookie meekly "simpers" rather than getting insulted or thinking how inappropriate it is that he jokes about her being his early Christmas present (when she's naked in his hidyhole) or that her thinks her "tits are fantastic" - gross. Is he trying to be more Eric like? Enough already Disappear Bill! Hope the real-life love of the TV couple isnt influencing this storyline here! Jason: Barely rates a mention. To be honest didnt miss him much although as a character I do like him. Sam (&Jannalyn): Sam features a fair bit - and the relationship between him and Sookie suddenly feels a lot closer. A small part of me wonders if they'll end up together in a sudden shock move. Certainly the relationship between Sam and Jannalyn is described critically by Sookie each time. Fairies: Odd stuff going on here - obvious something for the next book with all the fae locked in this world congregating at Hooligans and seemingly led by Claude. Eric seems to know all about it - yet Vamps dont appear to be picking the fae off for blood (well, aside from Victor once) Dermot seems slightly odd, although Sookie seems to be closer to him than Claude. Also a quick mention of being in debt to the Fae if you thank them - a quick comment of how this worries Sookie and then its left.... Assume another Fae book is in the offing.
... (hide spoiler)] Overall, I liked the book, although no-where near any of my favorites (which I confess feature ERIC and Sookie a lot... Is it a grower each time I read or will I only appreciate it when the next book comes out... When is the next one out - and is that the last one or the next to last one??
