Yeah I know you hear UF and you are probably thinking great no HEA and not a lot of sexy time. Well this story is fast paced, compelling, humorous, and the story is so captivating that for me I didn't even need those elements this time around. I will say there are two sexual tension scenes in it though. Hey for us PNR readers we take what we can get when it comes to UF...am I right? hehe
So after going out with her friend Sunny, our heroine Zoe is returning home to her apartment when she is attacked out of nowhere and wakes up in a body bag the next day. Did I mention she is attacked by some wacko freak who is mumbling nonsense to Zoe and pulsating energy through her? Yeah more on him in a minute. Anyway scared, and confused Zoe bumps into a handsome and kind former military/photographer man named Adam Razor who takes Zoe home with him and tries to help her out. After that strange attack that kinda left her dead, she begins to see physical changes and unexplained surges of energy coming out of her hands. What is she? What is happening to her? As fortune will have it, while Razor is on a photography job Zoe pops into a local bar in town to grab something to eat and meets the gorgeous chick magnet, confident, and mysterious Justus De Gradi. Justus notices something different about Zoe and tells her that she is like him..not human but a Mage a certain time of Breed that channels and uses energy. Well isn't she lucky? Or maybe not? As Justus talks with both Zoe and Adam (who being human shouldn't be involved in Mage business which kinda irks Justus but nonetheless help piece together what happened to Zoe after the attack) the mystery of what happened the night of her attack unfolds. Turns out Zoe is property of her Creator who we find out later is an evil bastard named Samil but since she was abandoned and wasn't taught by the proper protcol and laws this Breed lives and follows, Justus takes her to the Mage Council to offer to be her Ghuardian and kinda teaches her the ways of the Mage. She is then called simply Learner to his Ghuardian as it is customary for the Mage Creator to name his progeny officially and until them she is simply to be addressed as Learner.
After brutal training sessions and four months have passed Samil decides it is time to claim his Learner. Well let's just say all hell breaks loose in a battle to save Zoe from Samil who has his own not so kind agenda for his progeny.
All in all a very good start to a rather interesting concept for a story. Nice and refreshing to meet a different type of Character/Breed etc. The ending was great. Nice action, lead-ins for what's to come. As Zoe learns who she is we the reader are on that same exact journey with her. A couple of things to note:
Samil is such an evil abusive motherf*cker...I liked how Dannika wrote this villian. He was truly evil compared to the backdrop of a peaceful but not perfect image the Mage Council gives.
One of my favorite characters who I have not mentioned above is Simon who happens to be a good friend of Justus and now a good friend of Zoe (well actually as the story progresses you will see her new name as Samil makes her official in front of the council but I am not telling READ the book!)Simon is British with lots of cheeky British humor which I love. :) He is also a loyal and good friend.
Zoe is a great heroine. She is humorous, tough, strong, and I like her character. She is also a special kind of Mage as you will see as you read along and that just spells trouble leading into the next book.
Justus is strong, tough, gorgeous, has a unique power that makes woman fawn over him.. all except Zoe. He is also mysterious and kinda quiet right now. I want to know more about him. We do get a sense of his caring for Zoe and the beginnings of some romance.
The only thing I didn't care for was the part with Razor and his buddy Knox... I just wanted her to find out about herself and just wished Justus appeared a bit earlier.
I can't wait until book 2 and I am sure the pace will be the same. I want to learn more about Justus, the Mage, the Council, more of what Zoe is and what her potential is because like I said she is a special Mage within the Breed. I also want to know about this mysterious evil bastard who was working with Samil when Zoe was forced to stay with Samil by the Council. (Mage protocol you will see) Oh and I also want to know what happens to Adam? Oh did I forgot to mention what happens to Adam? Hehe well he is definitely still around and is quite sucked into Zoe's new world. Makes you wonder how this mere human can survive amongst the Mage. Well you will see... that is if you READ THIS BOOK! LOL ...more
