Casey's vacation with her parents and best friends, Mike and Jack, should have been the trip of a lifetime, not least since she's had a crush on prize-winning surfer and heartthrob Mike for ages. But instead of having a good time, Casey loses her parents in a storm and is stranded on what seems to be a deserted island with Mike and Jack. Soon they realize help isn't likely to come any time soon. In fact, they don't even know whether help with come at all. With no water to drink and no food, Casey and her friends withdraw deeper into the jungle in search for a place to spend the night. The problem is in the jungle nothing is as it seems. There are creatures Casey thought had died millions of years ago. Every step taken becomes a fight for their lives and every decision made will decide over their future.
I loved Casey. I thought she was likeable and had a backbone. She's clever and not the usual heroine loved by everyone because she's so pretty and no one can resist her. She actually has a charm that goes beyond physical appearance. Her love interest, Mike, was cocky and confident, and I could see the attraction between them. My favorite character, however, was Jack. I thought he was clever and funny. The mystery of the island kept me interested until the last page because the twists and turns kept coming. A thoroughly recommended read. I hope the sequel will be out soon! (less)

When Max is captures by some mean hunters, his best friends Burly and Max don't doubt for a minute that they'll save him. Together they embark on a breathtaking and at times hilarious adventure to save both Max and their beloved secret city.
I found this book not only inspiring but also cute and extremely well written. The author has a magical way with words that made the story come to life. The characters weren't just characters in my head; I could picture them before my eyes, I laughed with them and experienced their tension and joy. I absolutely adored this story and can't believe it's free. A great read not just for kids but also for the young at heart. Thoroughly recommended!(less)

I thought I wasn't reading right, and then I realised yes, that's exactly what it is. I was scared to move beyond page one because of all the drama and tension. Maeve Haile is your normal woman, happily married to Spenser with two teenage sons. As a library assistant, Maeve loves her job. She's into mysteries big time, so when she sees her neighbour with a woman other his wife, her curiosity is peeked and she feels compelled to investigate who the woman is. The problem is, no one at the library seems to have seen her.
I loved the mystery of this one and the writing is superb. Maureen Mullis is slowly morphing into one of my favourite authors because she knows how to tell a tale and keep up the suspense. The writing's is fantastic, the voice drew me in straight away. If you haven't read this one, go on and download the sample chapters and you'll see what I'm talking about. This is a fabulous, edge-of-your-seat book I thoroughly enjoyed, and I'm sure you will too. (less)

I absolutely loved Mira because she's confident and feisty but with a feminine and alluring side to her. I thought the paranormal elements were fantastic and so very different to anything that's flooding the paranormal fiction market. The mystery of the medallion kept me at the edge of my seat. Can't wait to find out more about Mira's past lives and her connections to the men who've mysteriously entered her life.
Lenore Wolfe's writing is flawless and she sure knows how to keep up the suspense and build drama. That's rare to find in an author. The characters were mysterious and thrilling. I kept turning one page after another until I read the whole book in one setting. Can't wait for the next book in the series to find out what happens next. Thoroughly recommended read. Don't miss out on this most original story.(less)

The story begins with the women meeting each other through a book club. Some have known each other before, others are strangers, but they all have something in common: a willingness to keep forcing their way forward in spite of the hardship and limitations in their lives. Are their friendship progresses, I felt myself drawn deeper into their lives, laughing and crying with them as they moved through the usual stages of hope and despair, and everything in between. Even though I could relate to all characters, I probably liked Nancy and Emma best because they seemed like real heroes and fighters. Their voices were so strong I could picture them before my eyes, and Nancy's love struggles are something everyone will experience at some point in their lives to some extent. I know I have.
What stroke me as the most impressive part about this book though is the writing. I think Maureen Mullis is a terrific author with a strong ability to capture real-life character and convey it into fiction. Emotions were palpable on every page, making me feel as though I was there, experiencing what these women experienced. A very enjoyable and thought-provoking read. This is one book I would thoroughly recommend and would read over and over again.(less)

I'm into paranormal romance bit time, usually because I love to read about paranormal creatures, but here it was the beautiful writing and voice that grabbed me from the start and didn't let me go until the very end.
It's 1871. Mandy has been fighting off Ashley's advances for years. She's neither interested in him as a husband, nor in the possibility of losing her land and ranch to the one evil person that seems to intimidate everyone in the village. Her heart has been filled with love for Hawk with whom she shares a deep spiritual connection, one that keeps calling to her, sending her visions. And while they're destined to be together and they both know it, Hawk's been hiding a secret for years, and this secret could cost them both everything they have --- even the love they share.
I thought Dark Warrior: To Tame a Wild Hawk was a beautiful romance with excellent writing and a loveable heroine. Mandy's as feisty as she is beautiful, and she won't let a man walk all over her. I also liked Hawk, who's sexy and brooding and who comes with a dark past that just won't let him get on with his life. The atmosphere was a foreboding one; one moment there's hope that everything will turn out as it should, and the next the reader can sense something's about to take place, but just won't be able to point out what it is. This was a fast, action packed read with well-developed characters. While the plot was one of twists and turns, it was the characters and beautiful writing that kept me glued to the page. I know this is one book I'll read again! (less)

Some are darker than others, some are funny and some are sad, like my favourite one, the protagonist who commits suicide because they cannot live up to their own expectations and would rather sink into their own despair than allow themselves to be as they are. As the reader progresses through the book, they'll start to realise the stories are all interlinked, giving the impression of moving from one book character to the next, from one life experience to another.
This is a book that hasn't been done before, a remarkable book with surprising depth, beautiful writing, and certainly no dumbed down language to allow it to fit into a genre. When it comes to the language, I'd call it literary; the voice, however, is sharp and educated with plenty of humorous layers to it. The stories are connected in their depth and ability to link reality with fiction, dreams and mysticism with satire and belief, lifestyle and choice with art, and many, many more.
It is a philosophical read, and while I'm into all that is philosophical, I often find philosophical books bordering on the boring side. Evolution of Insanity kept me reading from one tale to the other, wondering what would come next. I particularly liked the observational nature of the tales and how they brought to light all that is dark, hidden and twisted in human nature, giving insight into the various facets of humanity in a unique way. I was astounded at the immense creativity and diversity of this book, and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a bit of dark fiction with plenty of humour and excellent writing. (less)

Luckily for her, on the way back from the river Molly saves an injured rat-like animal from the claws of the neighbour's cat. Her father explains that the rat isn't a rat but a bandicoot and that she can't keep him because they need to grow in the wilderness where they can scavenge for food and build a family. Molly isn't convinced because the little critter sure looks like he would like someone to take care of him, so she vows to persuade her parents to let her keep the animal. How she does that is cute and funny since, the more Molly tries the more she messes up, until the only option she sees is to kidnap the little animal from her grandma who's a wildlife rescue officer.
Molly Gumnut Rescues a Bandicoot is a middle grade adventure for boys and girls aged 8 to 12 with lots of good twists. The language is kept age appropriate with a few difficult words to keep kids entertained and maybe provide a bit of a challenge. Molly's character is absolutely endearing. She is a funny, little girl with a bit of an attitude and a mind of her own. She simply adores animals and that's usually a good thing, but people around her just don't want to see it. The humour was great, the plot kept me wondering what would happen next. A thoroughly enjoyable read for the young and young-at-heart. (less)

After battling a disease that made all her hair fall out, she struggles to be liked at her new school, but instead of giving her a chance, the other children are just nasty and bully her. One day after yet another awful day at school, she takes a shortcut through the woods and finds a doll hanging from a tree branch. It turns out the speaking doll is a fairy named Roseberry, and a bad-mannered one at that. Velvet takes Roseberry home to help her find out why she has no magic powers, but caring for the little sprite turns out to be harder than it seems, what with the local bully trying to steal her and Velvet's mother coming in at all the wrong times.
Velvet Ball is a fantastic story with plenty of mischief and humour along the way. The writing is engaging with some challenging words for kids, but not too many that they would lose interest. The plot has many twists and turns that I was completely absorbed and couldn't put it down. Finally a book with beautiful writing that's able to teach valuable values in an entertaining way. A must-read and the perfect gift this winter.(less)
