I hope that this genre continues to open up and become as amazing as I hope it can. I really believe this genre could catch on like wildfire. It has the best of YA (the tone, coming of age, easy relate-ability) and not much of what can sometimes be grating for an adult reader (the WHINING, the high school aspect). I could probably write an entire post about how I have high hopes for NA. . . hmmm. Maybe I should.
Now to talk about The Wicked We Have Done specifically; I enjoyed it but there is a "but". It is great until you start looking too closely, then there are some things that bother me just a bit. Granted, that happens with sci-fi sometimes anyway but for me it wasn't just the sci-fi elements that made me go "hmmmmmm." For one thing I just am not sure that the justification made me believe that she didn't deserve to be in jail. People often say "I had no choice" and I can't agree with that. There is always a choice. We cannot control the actions of others but we can control our own. A hard choice or a choice that we despise is still a choice. So while I see where she was going with this (does doing something bad for a good reason mean our moral compass is bad?) I am just not sure that it really works for me.
Now here's the thing. If you are a long time reader you know that I am not exactly hard to please. I can forgive a lot. This book is no different. I really still enjoyed it despite the issue above. I am a story first type of girl. I can even go for a great story when I don't love the characters (or their choices) that are in it. This IS an interesting story. The way that our society changes year after year, is it really so far fetched to think that we might try to find an alternative to our prison system one day? If that is the case why not get to the root of the problem? Stop worrying about all the laws and just find out if the person that broke the law has a good or bad moral compass? I can go with that logic. I hope it never happens but I can go with the story.
I think this is going to be one of those books that people either really like or really don't. I hope that lots of people pick it up though. It is fun to read, imaginative and hopefully the start of a trend in NA that isn't just romance.
BOTTOM LINE: I say give it a chance!
Source: I was given a copy via Netgalley from the publisher for review. However, I didn't download it in time so I purchased my on copy via iBooks. (less)

Dixie sees that some of the other children have allergies and that makes them seem special. She wants to be special too. Being a mother I understand that children sometimes want what they can't have. My daughter has the most beautiful curly hair. You know what she always wants me to do right? Straighten it! Ahhh!!!
What happens when they actually get what they thought they wanted? It doesn't always turn out the way that they thought it would. I think that this story illustrates that beautifully.
Speaking of illustrations, this book is really well done in that department. Dixie is just the cutest thing ever. I think that the expressions made by all the characters, including the animals, are my favorite part.
My 9 year old daughter wrote her own review:
My favorite part of the story was when she got an allergy and got to wear the bracelet she didn't like it. It was kind of funny (well, it wasn't funny that she got an allergy!) because that has happened to me before. I thought I would like taking dance class but once I started I realized that I liked my gymnastics class I was in before better.
I love all the details in the pictures too. There is a sun that has a face in some of the pictures and I thought that was cute. Every time I look at the pictures I see something I didn't notice before.
This is a funny book with awesome pictures. I recommend it! (less)
