Valia's Villain is book 2 in Jocelyn Dex's Sempire Seduction series. Dex has managed to make this book even sexier than her first one, which I adored. In this sequel, we follow Araya's vivacious sister, Valia. Valia is a free-spirited demon who gets what she wants, when she wants. What she wants right now is a hot guy in a club. She seems to be immediately attracted to a Ferox demon who she has to have. He wants her too, it turns out. But not fully for the reasons she thinks. He wants to get revenge on her from being her prisoner thirty years ago. The Ferox demon, Rydin, was under contract. Her keeping him imprisoned has added an extra 50 years on his contract. He hates her for what she did, but he also can't fight the fact that he has feelings for her too.
*fans self* Well, goodness. Man, what an incredibly sexy read. I had a lot of fun reading this. Valia was quite a crazy character, but she was a lot of fun. She was always cracking jokes. She doesn't scare easily and she was very stubborn. There are times when she sort of reminded me of a teenager in the book. Araya is the younger sister, but you would never know it. Rydin is a Ferox demon. Ferox demons are usually sold into slavery at a very young age. Rydin is carrying out a job for the demon who holds his contract. While doing a job, Rydin kidnaps Valia and takes her back to the demon realm. He wants to starve her and keep her captive like she did to him thirty years ago. Valia doesn't remember Rydin at all. Even though she is supposed to be scared, Rydin is surprised that Valia is not that frightened because she can see he wants her no matter how much he claims to hate her. I loved the push-pull-sex relationship they had going on. Rydin is sweetheart deep, deep, deep down and needs a strong woman at his back. Valia had all of that and more.
I really love Rydin's story in this book. Rydin has been contracted to an Incubus demon named Debol. Debol is quite evil. He keeps a Sempire demon as a bargaining chip and has Rydin kill whoever he wants for no real reason (at least that we know of). Debol was just maniacal, but later on we see he is quite the coward. Valia finds out about Rydin's contract and she wants to help him. He doesn't trust her. He thinks it is a ruse so she can escape. I love how this changes for Rydin and Valia. It made me love Valia more seeing how she went about the last couple of chapters.
I really liked this book. I did have a couple of issues. I would have liked to know more about Debol and why he had Rydin kill off people in the book. I really wanted to know. I was especially curious with the character of Baden. What was the deal there? I hope we get more about Baden and his family dilemma. I also wish we had a backstory about Valia. I don't feel like I learned a lot about her. I love her personality even when she talks like a teenager sometimes, but what makes her who she is. Not much about her past except what happened between her and Rydin in the past.
Overall, this was a great novella. It was super sexy and fun. It is definitely an erotic read. The language may be a bit much for some. I have grown quite a bit with these. A few years ago I probably wouldn't have been so on board, but I have grown a bit since then and I get it now. Nonetheless, be cautious if erotic language isn't your thing. The characters made me laugh and the book had a lot of energy. I love what we learn about Fin and I still can't wait to see where his story goes. I am also very curious about Baden. This is a fun read that you will speed through. I am very addicted to this series and you will be too. ...more
This is my first read by Zoey Williams and it definitely won't be my last. The Demon's Forbidden Passion was one exciting read for sure. We follow a demon and firefighter named Ethan. He just got a call about a house on fire that happens to be in a gated community he used to live in. A community for demons. He saves a young boy who happens to be just like him. A nurse named Tina is also sent on the scene to help the boy, but when she spots Ethan, she knows her peaceful night will be thrown out the window. Ethan and Tina fall hard for each other, but there are some terrible secrets between them that could tear them apart. Or worse, kill them.
Well this was a really fun read. Our main characters were steamy from the get go. Talk about instant love. I know it could happen, but this was barely five minutes. But, I did enjoy it because the characters were so lovable. Tina was a great nurse who loves her job. She is such a great nurse that she has never lost a patient. Everyone is always better after seeing her. Ethan is smoking hot and he knows it. He never sticks to just one girl, but that is because he can't. There is a curse on him that he never talks about. Sadly though, Tina is wakening that curse.
I really liked this story. I wasn't sure how it was going to or really how it came to be. Apparently demons are known in this world, but it never explains how. I would have loved to have known more. I wish there was a bit more worldbuilding here. But at the end of the day though, this is a love story. It was just 70 pages long and Williams managed to create lovable characters with a great emotional connection. Along with an intriguing story with an interesting twist at the end. I really thought this was a prequel or something, but the story was pretty complete. I would love to see more of this world. I definitely want to see more from Williams, that's for sure. Check this out if you want a quick and steamy paranormal read for an afternoon....more
This is definitely the kind of read that makes a booklover like me drool. How could I resist? How awesome would it be if one of your favorite characters from one of your favorite series just appeared in your bedroom? Oh, the many scenarios that come to mind. But it may not be all that great for Karla.
Karla just received an ARC from her best friend for her birthday. She stays up reading and ends up sleeping on the book which cuts her. That drop of blood along with one little wish summons a very powerful and sexy gargoyle right out of her book. Problem is, he happens to be the villain of the story and he wants to eat. I mean really eat her, but he also has a certain pull to her he can't explain. They have to team up to try and figure out who would want him summoned if not Karla and why. They also must try not to kill each other or fall for one another.
I really had a blast with this book. This story was quite imaginative. Olteano definitely has a knack for creating incredible worlds. I love her take on gargoyles and other supernatural beings. It was amazing. The story was well paced and really focused on the connection between Karla and Kann. I loved the push-and-pull between them. Karla lived a pretty quiet life. She doesn't expect much out of it considering her bleak family history. So she only has her one friend named Mike and her books. But everything changes when she makes the innocence mistake of sleeping on the new book. This summons Kann the gargoyle from her favorite series. He is an absolute pain and scary. He eats bears for breakfast. Frakking bears! But she can't fight the attraction to him. But she knows she doesn't possess any power, so how did he end up with her? How did he end up in her world and how can she send him back?
Karla was a great lead. I loved her sense of humor from the get go. The "war cannon" boobies nearly killed me. She is realistic and isn't holding her breath for Prince Charming. I really liked her. And Kann, oh Kann. He was the ultimate Alpha male. He was too cocky for his own good, but to be fair, he had every right to be. I loved the scenes these two shared. They had me fanning myself one second and laughing like crazy the next. They were more alike than I think either of them realized and it was great seeing both of them break past their barriers. I loved and I can't wait to see more of them. They were a real treat.
I love finding New Adult Paranormal Romance reads. There seem to be more in the Contemporary genre, which I love, but still. I love Olteano's world. The gargoyles, vampires, elves, dragons (oh, the dragons) and much more. This book had me at the edge of my seat. I was dying to find out what was going to happen next and uncover the mystery especially with Karla. The family thing couldn't have been a coincidence, right? I loved this book a lot. It had everything I could ask for. Highly recommended....more
Feeling Death follows a woman named Sam who has a special ability. She is an empath. Her empath abilities make her very important in finding some very dangerous killers. Aside from trying to catch a serial killer, Sam is experiencing some scary and interesting things in her life. She is married to a man named Nixon, but can't get the thoughts of a man named Austin out of her head. She hates that she is cheating on her husband even though it is mentally, but something feels right about it even though she won't admit it. Sam soon finds out not everything isn't what it seems, both with those around her and herself.
This is easily going on my favorite reads of 2013 list. It wouldn't be a great list without this book on it. Feeling Death oozes imagination and creativity. You will be on the edge of your seat from beginning to end with this. Oh my goodness, the mystery will kill you. I couldn't believe it and it is only the beginning.
Sam is a very complex character and for good reason. Her empath abilities can pick up on peoples' emotions and sometimes their thoughts if they are strong enough. She is able to feel the last moments of someone's life and that is what makes her so good at her job. Now if you are like me and you are a fan of that new Hannibal show, she has Will's ability which is pretty awesome and freaky as hell all at once. While hunting a serial killer targeting strippers, she knows exactly who the killer is. But that is only the beginning. The story goes much deeper than that. There are a lot of things and I mean a lot of things being kept from Sam. Top of that list is the mysterious Austin that replaces her husband's face. She has no idea who he is, but she knows he means something to her. At first she thinks she is losing her mind, but that may not be the case. I did want to punch her a couple of times in the book given the Nixon situation. But after hearing what her empath abilities due to her personally, I can understand. But still though.
But I still love Sam. She was both vulnerable and stubborn. I love the connection she had with the other characters in the book specifically when we meet the elusive Austin. Oh boy, you want to talk about chemistry. I loved their scenes together. They went from being very sexy and steamy to sweet and funny. Just everything came together so beautifully. I love how these characters were written out. Their personalities added a lot to the book. And if I am being honest, I am Team Nixon. I love the scenes we get when meeting him. I knew if I met him, I would have been giggling like a silly schoolgirl. He had me smiling from ear-to-ear. This is also where I would have placed one of those well deserved punches on Sam. I get the connection between her and Austin, but come on.
The story was incredible. I have never come across anything like this before. I love that this is such a beautiful mixture of paranormal and mystery. Dyllin's writing style is impeccable. This woman is a master with pen and paper (or fingers and keys, whichever she prefers). There is soooooo much more to this story that catching a serial killer. Everything comes back to Sam and her memories. Her memories play a huge role in this book. We get snippets in the beginning of the book, but they become more elaborate in the second half of the book. Some of these flashbacks will get repeated , but that is part of the mystery. Someone is playing with her and those she loves and you are dying to find out who. The twists, dear sweet baby Jesus, the twists! And yet there are so many questions left when it is all over. Dyllin is definitely not done teasing us. The things we learn are staggering.
I really hope I am not giving away too much. It is impossible not to mention some things when writing about this book. But trust me, this is only the surface. There are characters in this book that we will meet that I feel know much more than they let on. There are even scenes when you know something just doesn't feel right. You know something is definitely wrong, but you can't put all the pieces together. I love a great mystery and this one has me stumped liked no other. It is an incredible jigsaw puzzle that I am going to have a lot of fun putting together. I didn't want the book to end. As a matter of fact, it should have been longer since I felt the ending was a bit rushed. But I think Dyllin did this for a reason. This is a must read. You honestly won't find a book quite like this. Get it right now. What are you doing still reading this? Start it now!...more
Araya's Addiction is a paranormal romance about a woman named Araya. Araya has a bit of a dilemma. She is a half-human/half-Sempire mix. Sempires are like vampires, but instead of blood to survive, they need semen. Araya doesn't like this one bit because she doesn't want to be a slave to those urges. She wants to be in love and with one person. But she would rather choose death before she gives into her Sempire urges. That is until her mother kidnaps a man named Kean to awaken the urges Araya is trying to ignore. Problem is, Kean isn't all human. He is part Incubus and Incubi are very dangerous to Sempires because they are addictive. But being trapped in the same room together, sparks fly and secrets come to light. Some secrets that will lead to betrayal, but may be just the thing to help Araya.
Goodness gracious, this book should come with a warning. I swear even my ereader was heating up while reading this and it wasn't even plugged in. I enjoyed the hell out of this. I think if you are like me and you are a fan of Larissa Ione's books, you will love this. This was a super sexy read that will heat you up from head to toe.
Our characters were fantastic together and apart. Araya is basically a prisoner in her own home. Her mother wants her to stop fighting her Sempire side. Her fighting her nature is slowly killing her. You see that she hates it and never gives in when it comes to the other men that her mother sets in front of her. That is what made her connection to Kean even better in this book. Araya and Kean definitely had great chemistry. I love the scenes of them just talking and getting to know each other, They had me smiling from beginning to end. And boy their sex scenes will have you melting. Wow, I want more Kean, desperately.
I love how this story played out. Araya's mother is quite out of line taking men to her daughter for her to use. But you do understand why. She wants to save her daughter anyway she can. She sees that her body is basically eating itself. She obviously will do anything she can to save her. I love her reason for actually kidnapping Kean. After her explanation, it made perfect sense. I wish I could kidnap a guy and it go over this well. Ummm, I didn't just say that, ignore that part.
Overall, this is a read I highly recommend to PNR fans. It is short, funny, sexy, and sweet. I love what Dex has given us. This is her debut and she did an incredible job. The world is new and exciting. The characters are all very likable demon or otherwise. I am definitely a fan and I can't wait to see what Dex has up her sleeve next. Possible book for Fin? Purtee-please? Seriously, the moment he showed up, I just had a feeling about him. You will not be sorry for reading this. As a matter of fact, it will make you happy in more ways than one. ...more
Dead Sexy Dragon is a super sexy new read from author Lolita Lopez. In this book, we follow a man named Stig who is living in hell right now. He is a dragon and he is going through a mating heat. This drives him to become terribly lusty and forces him to become a dragon every night. He hates that he must lock himself up to make sure he doesn't hurt anyone. But things change when his late friend's sister, Cora, comes knocking at his door in tears. Cora is in a lot of trouble and he will do anything he can to help her. But he hopes he can hide his other half from her or else he might end up hurting her.
Oh I can't wait for more of this series. I am in love. I really loved Stig. He is an amazing book boyfriend. He was insanely sexy and strong. I loved how much he worked to make sure people around him were safe. I really liked Cora as well. I don't blame her for wanting Stig. He was mouthwatering. There was one point I wanted to smack some sense into though. She really did piss me off. I found her a bit selfish at that point, but I guess it was her fear talking. But I still needed to get that off my chest.
This story was a quick read and it was super sexy. I loved Lopez's take on dragons and knights. I love the idea of the war. It is quite the update from the usual we are use to. Knights are the bad guys that think all dragons need to be eliminated. Stig and his Brotherhood of dragons have been put together to protect those around them. They do follow a very strong set of rules though, no dragon is to be with a human woman. But Stig may be willing to throw all of that out of the window for Cora even if it makes things worse.
I really enjoyed this story. I will definitely read it again after I read book 2, which I have already. This book is fast paced, action packed, and insanely hot. Definitely don't read this in public. You will not want to put this book down when you start it. You will fall in love with this book. I am looking forward to more books in this series for sure. I am a fan and you should be too....more
Yes, yes, yes. Oh, this is what I love about paranormal romance. This was such an incredible read. I will be reading it again. Kenya Wright has quite the read here. I am so glad I jumped on this the moment I saw the cover. I love arms, what can I say? I know you are not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but with a cover like that, I have some very sexy expectations. And boy, Wright delivered. Thank you so much.
This is my first read by Wright even though she has been on my wishlist for a while. I am glad I started this. I love Wright's writing style. This story was amazing. I love the world she created. Escape was super original. Her take on vampires was amazing. Wright has created a world where vampires are known and coexist with humans. Of course vampires must live on blood, but the delicacy comes from the dominas. Dominas are human women who have the right kind of blood to create children with vampires. They are ruled by a king, The Quiet King. He rules all and wants the dominas all to himself. If they create boys with a special mark that means they are a prince, the babies are executed long before they can rule. The Quiet King wants to rule all and he makes sure that villages in trouble trade their special daughters for his assistance. And this is what happened to Brie.
Our main character Brie was in the fight for her life. She hates being a slave to the King and she wants to go home to her family. She did it save her family and village, but can not take being slave and watching babies being slaughtered. She escapes from the castle where she is held. She was a great lead because she really fought for her life and didn't want anyone to lose their lives for her. She is getting some help from a pathfinder named Samuel. He doesn't want to help a domina considering all the people that will die if the King finds out, but he can't help that he is attracted to her either. Samuel has a secret of his own that no one can find out, but he is slowly beginning to trust her with it.
This book was hard to put down. I loved everything about this book. Wright is one hell of a writer. I love how much creativity was put into this novella. This book was so sexy and exciting. You will love these characters and where this story goes. If you are like me and you love paranormal romance books, you better add this to your cart. It will make you very happy, in more ways than one....more
YES!!!! Yes, yes, yes! Oh my goodness, this was so good. This is my kind of PNR read. I loved this book so much. This was like Larissa Ione's Demonica series, but with gods. The imagination and the dialogue used in this book made me so happy. I had a fun time with this book and I couldn't put this down even if I wanted to. Simply put...this book had everything I could ask for and more. This definitely is going on my favorites list.
Ismini was a great lead. I instantly loved her and her friends. I related to Ismini the most. I felt sorry for her because it always seems like she is put on the backburner. He doesn't think she is good enough and given her fate, that couldn't be more clear. But I loved that even though she knows why she was created, she fought for herself. She didn't just lay down and wait to be the sacrificial lamb she was meant to be, I loved Dyletri. Oh my goodness, he was mouthwatering. He was also a character I connected with instantly. He has so much riding on his shoulders and has been waiting for a very long time to make things right. The chemistry between these two was explosive from beginning to end. Oh my goodness, the sex scenes were soooooo good.
Not only are the main characters great, but the side characters are just as exciting. Ismini's best friend Evesse was a riot. When she shows up on the scene when she finds out what is happening to Ismini, she had me dying of laughter. This girl has a lot of fire to say the least. You never know what she is going to say next. I loved the push and pull between her and Zeniel. They were definitely fighting their feelings for each other in the most entertaining way. It was so much fun. I loved that the gods are thousands and thousands of years old, but they love the human world and how we are. They talk like regular humans and it made the book more fun for me. I just loved these characters. They will stick with you when the book is done.
I love the idea of this book. Dyletri is the God of Fertility, but he doesn't want the job anymore. He fell in love with a woman and now she is dead. So he has made a deal. He won't touch a woman for eleven thousand years. He will wait until the woman that possess the right soul to sacrifice. That woman is Ismini. One he sacrifices Ismini, he will get back the woman he lost and to save Earth given the promise he broke. Dyletri is very attracted to Ismini, but that isn't even the half of it. Ismini has quite the reaction to Dyletri. They try to avoid each other, but that doesn't work out so well. But it may be more than they both bargained for. Dyletri has to fight to fix his mistake and an impending war that may be connected to him and Ismini.
I love this book so much. It is action packed and loads of fun. The characters are amazing. They all have very distinct personalities that make them very memorable. You will love them all, especially the men. Oh the men! The dialogue was so much fun. The worldbuilding was innovative and engaging. I am going to read this again before the next book. It is impossible not to. I highly recommend this book to everyone. Everyone over the age of 18. This book is very, very steamy. A must read. Do not miss this book....more
Wolf's Haven is a story that follows a woman named Tamara. Tamara is in a lot of trouble. Her fiance, Brad, is not a good man. He abuses her and takes her out on his multiple burglary excursions. She wants out and she wants out now. She wants to leave and start a new life with a new identity. But first, she needs to make sure her plan works. While on another heist, Tamara makes her escape. But while the cops close in, she is rescued by an unlikely hero; a wolf. The wolf saves her life. When she wakes up, she is in a strange cabin with an even stranger man named Devin. She doesn't trust him, but has nowhere else to go. But they soon become attracted to each other and she finds out his secret. His secret will be a fight for both of them and they don't know if they will survive their new roles.
I love my shapeshifter romances and this was just the right kind of read I loved. It was a fast read and it was addictive. I loved the build-up of the story and the characters in this book. Kirk has done such a great job. This is my first read from her and it definitely won't be my last. I am in love with this series.
I really liked Tamara. You instantly for sorry for her and her situation. She is frightened and scared for her life because her fiance Brad is a monster. She was tricked into a relationship with him. She has every right to be on the run. But it is great that she ran into Devin. Devin is a lone wolf for the most part. His pack, well his father who was the Alpha, has banished him. He doesn't want the position, but the replacement is not a great option either. The one that wants to lead will do anything to get to the top. He has to be there to make sure he doesn't get to the top even if he won't take the position. But he has to look after Tamara first. He knows she is running from something or someone. He wants to help her, but he doesn't really know why. He is protective of her immediately. I love Devin and I loved how much backstory we get with Devin and Tamara. They both have pasts that they are running from and demons that continue to haunt them.
The story was well paced and well put together. I did have a few issues though. I couldn't wait until Devin and Tamara reached Caedmon territory. But I would have liked if we got more of that and the pack especially the villain in the story, Darius. Darius is Devin's cousin and desperately wants to lead the pack, but he is more of a dictator and will hold the pack back. But the fight between them was a bit rushed and short for me. I wanted more darnit! The same goes for Tamara and her ex-fiance Brad. I like my revenge stories and I would have liked to have seen Brad get punished at least a little bit for what he did to Tamara. But this is a short story, so that happens. I loved where the story went and the things that were uncovered about Devin's family. I can't say what, but it an interesting surprise. Again, I wanted a little more here, but I am still satisfied.
This is such a good story, The scenes between Devin and Tamara were very hot and steamy. You will definitely need a cold shower after reading this. I only wish it were longer. But the read is fast and the characters are very likable. You relate to them very quickly. I love them and their stories. I can't wait to start book 2, We get to follow Tamara's friend who tried to help her escape in this book and Devin's best friend Nick. Definitely recommended for PNR fans for sure....more
Red Hot is a sexy novella about a man named Red. He is shy and nerdy. He is a scientist who buries his life in his work. But one thing he loves is his motorcycle especially when he is sexual frustrated. After one day of working, he rides home on his motorcycle. But things go for a spin after he swerves out of the way from running over a baby deer in the middle of the road. He then meets a peculiar woman named Rhian who heals him in a matter of seconds. She s nice to him, too nice he thinks. He thinks she is up to something and is weird, but cute. Rhian doesn't know why Red is so shy and a social outcast. He doesn't feel comfortable in his own skin. But she has every intention on breaking his shell...maybe with a little magic.
Oh my goodness, I loved this little read. It was smoking hot, but had a lot of emotional moments as well. Red was just downright perfect in my opinion. Again I ask, “Where are these kind of men hiding?!” It isn't fair dammit! He was just adorable and hot all at once. I really connected with him because I know how it is. He was just amazing. I especially loved him even more half way through the book when he really got out of his shell. Oh my goodness, no cold shower will help you here. Trust me. I also love Rhian. She killed me in this book. The woman was funny as hell. She was quirky and wasn't born with a filter. Her mouth gets away from her and that just made her more fun. She wanted Red and she let him know. No beating around the bush at all. I liked that a lot.
I love the story – a nerd meets a witch. That just makes me smile because of all the things that would be insane with that scenario. But I love how much Rhian tries to help Red. He really sold himself short and it was awful especially when we meet one of Red's ex-girlfriends' who I swear is demon spawn. The trick she pulled in this book...oh man. I wanted to reach into the pages and strangle her. I love the struggle between them and the obstacles they had to face specifically Red. He had his own demons to face and it was nice to see where it went.
I absolutely adored this. It was fun, sexy, and sweet. It was a great blend. The dialogue between the characters was a lot of fun again due to Rhian. She had such a strange way of speaking and I guess it was due to her Irish lithe. But you would have sworn she was full Irish. Same thing with Red actually. Did he grow up in Australia or something? I just want to know. Nonetheless, if you are looking for a fun and short read, this is the perfect choice. It will leave you smiling and sweating....more
Breaking the Nexus follows a woman named Sha who lives in a different realm known as Mythria. All the creatures we believe are just mythical fairy tales all live in Mythria. Sha is one of the warriors in Mythria that protects the Nexus. The Nexus is what separates Mythria from the Human Realm. But there are gates or weak spots that have been created that let those creatures through into our world. Sha senses an even bigger problem, someone has been using very dangerous magic and before she knows what it is, she is thrown into the Human Realm. If that weren't bad enough, she lands right in the middle of a crime scene, which makes her the number one suspect. The detective, Connor, doesn't believe she is the killer they have been hunting, but gets the feeling she may be able to help find who did it. He thinks she is nuts due to her talk of magic and different realms, but soon finds out that she isn't crazy as she seemed. The things humans have never thought existed are coming through the cracks quickly and they must hurry to find the culprit before all hell breaks loose.
Holy crap was this book awesome. Everything I could ask for was in this book. Add this to your TBR list. You will not regret it. I loved our heroine Sha. She was quite the badass in this book. I loved how nothing phased her. Or at least she didn't let it show that nothing phased her. She could go up against the baddest of the bad and keep her cool. I loved that. Connor was a great lead as well. And sexy as hell. I loved the attraction between him and Sha. The both had me cracking up. I loved the banter between them. From the get go, you can tell they will really suit each other even though Connor has to fight it. She is a witness after all and it isn't a great idea to have the hots for someone whose case you are investigating. I also enjoyed Connor's partner, Ian. I loved how close they were. They were like brothers. I also want to know more about Alec. I knew there was something about him, but now I am very curious.
I loved the world Avalon created. I like the idea of everything we think isn't real is just out of our reach. It was scary thinking that someone wants to break the Nexus because they hate humans so much. Someone is using blood magic, the most dangerous magic, to weaken the Nexus. Once it is unleashed, the creatures are the least of the humans worries. There is something bigger that wants to get out and it has been trapped for a very, very long time. The only thing strong enough to kill it has been killed and are exceptionally rare to find.
I loved this book a lot. I loved the connection between Connor and Sha. They were incredible. They scenes together had me smiling one second and sweating the next. The story is epic and I can't wait for the sequel especially with that ending. Oh my goodness! Left my mouth hanging open. I want more now. It is quite dark in parts, just saying for those who are squeamish. It was pretty disturbing. This was a very exciting read. I was on edge trying to uncover the mystery of it all. Highly recommended for PNR and UF fans. I will be front row and center for the sequel and you will be too....more

Slade is a new author for me. I thought I would like to start off with her novella. I liked this, but I wanted to love it. Slade definitely has a way with words and kept me on the edge of my seat. I have every intention of starting her Marked Souls series which looks delicious. The problem I had with this is book however is that it was too much for 67 pages. It felt like 250 page book condensed down to 67 pages. It was a bit overwhelming because it is so much packed into something so little.
I really liked Imogene and Vaile. Imogene is scared and wants her freedom from the crazy queen. She wants a life not full of deception and illusions. I like the instant attraction between her and Vaile. Vaile has been running into for a while and he has finally gotten the chance to talk to her. But things fall a little short when they start running for their lives from the Dark Hunters. I liked the chase, but the chase alone revealed things that I expected very early in the book. Vaile is suspicious from the beginning because he didn't seem like your average runner. But it was odd because given his inner dialogue you would have thought something completely different. This will make sense once you read it.
I liked the plot a lot and think this book has a great premise. But as I said 67 pages is just too short for this. The world is huge and very complicated. From the get go I felt a little overwhelmed by the story. But once we meet the characters and get some of their story, things start to fall into place. So it is best to keep to the book until the end. But even when you get to the end and things are explained, it felt a bit contrived and rushed.
If this had 50-100 more pages, it would have been great. I think the suspense would be a lot better and drawn out. I figured things out pretty quickly because there wasn't that much build up there, but still. I liked the characters and I like the story though. I heard that this will be a series and I am extremely curious to see where it goes. The ending of this was pretty complete, so I don't know what the series will be about, but I am guessing there is more to this that we missed. Jeez, I usually don't write long reviews for short stories, but I just had to get this off of my chest. Overall, this is a good read, but could have been great....more
In the year 2030, Earth is in shambles. Due to a terrible outbreak, the human population has decreased immensely. Not only that, but it has been taken over by Xanthians. They run Earth and most of its humans. When a woman named Sarah discovers her brother has disappeared while fighting on Earth, she goes on the hunt to find him on Earth. She changes her name to Liasare and runs into trouble in no time flat. She is found by a man named Jurek who is much more than he seems. With Jurek and his team's help, Liasare discovers more than she bargained for that could put her and the Earth's future at risk.
Oh my goodness! This was so good. The story is just insane. Even by the time you hit the 100th page, there is still so much to learn. This book was just action packed. Hargrove does a great job building up the dystopian world of Earth. I love the world she sets for us. It is very dark and gritty. I love the idea behind the Xanthians and how people try to survive with them being the rulers and all. It really added to the intensity of the story for me and made the world more believable and unpredictable.
The characters were thoroughly entertaining. Jurek is book boyfriend worthy. He does have his moments though. He can be very cold one minute and smoldering hot the next. But we do learn why he is the way he is. He has a lot on his plate because he is out hunting for something he may or may not be prepared for. But he will, oh boy he will. He is epic. Plain and simple. Lisare was a fun heroine. She was a bit naïve about the world around her given that she has been on Earth for almost 20 years, so she does have her share of moments as well. Her and Jurek are both pretty strong characters, so when they are together, things are combustible. A lot of the dialogue between them was very entertaining because they butt heads so much. To say I loved them together is an understatement. They really burned up the pages to say the least. Not to mention their back stories were great. I love how we explore Lisare's life and how big of a role her brother played in her life. She really would do anything to get him back. She is definitely an all or nothing kind of gal.
Dark Waltz is definitely a favorite. It was jammed packed with great characters and great twists. This read will keep you on your toes. I could barely put this down and when I did, all I did was think about it. I just learned that this is a spinoff series to Hagrove's Young Adult/New Adult series The Guardians of Vesturon. I have every intention of read that series. It is not absolutely necessary to read that series before you read this, but it seems to actually understand more about the world, well worlds, you should check them out. I know I will. So I have discovered two series I will be stalking all rolled up into one. Epic win! Highly recommended for dystopian, science fiction and paranormal romance fans because this book is all three in one. Do not miss this one....more
Let me start by saying this is the revised version of Desires Unleashed, so considering some of the older reviews I have seen, I can gladly say this was definitely awesome. Now, let's get the ball rolling.
Desires Unleashed is a book about a world where the supernatural are known. Of course, there are some who don't like it and some who don't agree with it. When a man is found decapitated (his head was literally ripped off) it seems a very ugly light will be shone on the supernatural. So we follow Detectives Warren and Matthew who are trying to get to the bottom of the case. But the murderer involved is doing nothing but taunting the cops because they have absolutely nothing to go on. The book follows various other characters who may or may not help with the case. Only time will tell who the murderer is.
I loved this book a lot. This was definitely a more character driven read for the first half of the story. We really get the chance to learn about them and their lives. Detectives Warren and Matthew were fun to know. They had me smiling a lot especially when it came to food. Warren is a werewolf, but no one knows except Matthew. If word got out, he would lose his job as a cop. There seems to be a bit of tension between them (sexually), but neither one of them confront it. We also meet Xavier and Darian. They are a bit neutral. You don't really know whether they are good or bad. They have an open relationship, but they obviously love each other a lot. We also meet Natasha and Annette. They are best friends and roommates. They were my favorites. Annette was wild and fun, Natasha was a bit reserved, but still fun. Natasha is frightened of the supernaturals, she avoids them and their businesses at all cost.
The plot is like a slow burn. We are mainly focused on the characters in this book. Simmons style is very unique with this since this book doesn't have one main story. Instead we follow four different stories and learn how these stories intertwine later on. Well actually three stories that intertwine. We follow another story with wereleopards named Sergio and Elise. Sergio loves Elise and wants her for his mate, but Elise loves Darian. Elise is a very selfish character we learn, but this story doesn't connect with the rest with the exception of Darian. But I have a feeling they will play a bigger part later. I can't wait because Elise has some great 'villain potential'. But things take a turn when something happens to Natasha and Annette. Natasha makes a discovery that will change her life forever. I won't spoil how this works, but it was quite a surprise and I loved it.
This is definitely a difficult review for me because any little thing could spoil how this plays out. Simmons style is very unique and open. The romances in this book were very steamy and complicated. Gay, straight, bisexual, we get it all in this book. I love how much we see of their lives and how they end up meeting. There is no main character or couple, there is no main story, well until you get to the halfway point, but still. Out of all the connections made in this book, my favorite was between Xavier and Natasha. I can't wait to see where that goes. The end promises more. This book was a page turner. I read this in a day because I was dying to see how these characters would connect. Highly recommended for paranormal romance lovers and people who like the six degrees of separation. But be sure to get the updated/revised version. ...more
Seduced by Innocence is a retelling of Shakespeare’s classic, Romeo and Juliet. Our main character Rose is a witch who lives in the mountain with her coven. Her coven has a rival with a group of half werewolf/half Druids who love nearby. One night after the Druids seemingly vandalized some of the coven’s property, On the same night, Rose realizes her mom, the queen of the coven, needs help. So naturally, Rose defends her mother with her powers. Rose is very careful about touching people; she is scared to touch people. Rose has the ability to suck someone’s soul from their body. They don’t die, they are in a coma. But Rose knows she needs to learn a new way to fight and not use her powers on someone. She and her best friend, Ocean, start to take martial arts. But Rose had no idea that the martial arts instructor would be by so mouthwatering. Things steam up between them, but the secrets they hide from each other could be enough to tear them apart for good,
Ok, this is definitely going on my favorites list. I love love love this book. I love this more modern and paranormal take on Romeo and Juliet. I really enjoyed Rose. I felt sorry for the fact that she couldn’t take anyone. Any strong emotion seems to bring her powers to the forefront. Am I the only one that was thinking about Anna Paquin as Rogue from X-Men? She too could suck the life out of someone. Goodness that is so depressing. But I do love that even though she hated it, she didn’t let it bring her down. I liked that she thought about trying to protect herself in other ways instead of always putting someone into comatose. That is especially due to her best friend Ocean who was a lot of fun in this book. I heard that Ocean will be getting her own book and I sure as hell can’t wait. She is a wild and spunky, but she will have you smiling. Not to mention, she is the first one to see that something isn’t quite right with the coven. She was incredible.
We also had Derek, the sexy martial arts instructor. He is very free spirited and doesn’t want to be a clone of his father. But he hears what has happened to his brother, so he knows he must go back home. I love that Kinrade wrote this book from both his POV and Rose’s. I loved being in Derek’s head. We see how much he is trying to deal with being back home, But I loved that the relationship between him and Rose made him want to stay. Although I did want to slap him for even considering leaving at first. Their scenes together were amazing especially when they were at the cabin. I was a little peeved that they stayed there for two weeks and we didn't see that much of their “private” time. Derek's hot as hell and I want more. Kinrade, you are a tease. But we got some memorable scenes, so I won't complain that much. I think I should invest in my own jacuzzi.
I loved the mystery of trying to uncover what Rose's mother is hiding. From the get go you know something isn't quite right especially with Blake. Blake is head over heels in love with Rose, he will do anything to be with her. But he is 100% human. So you wonder exactly why he is there in the coven in the first place when humans aren't allowed. Like I said, this was why I loved Ocean because she said what I was thinking. She brought up a great point as to why she was there herself. So I am more curious as to why Blake is there. We see that he is human, but maybe not entirely. How could he do what he did? Did he make a deal of some kind or something? I am dying to find out. I love this idea of fueling families and where it went. Kinrade did a brilliant job of keeping the mystery between the both of them. Sometimes you see books and movies do this and it seems a bit contrived, but here it worked and made sense.
I highly recommend this especially if you are curious about the New Adult genre. There aren't enough New Adult PNR reads and there should be. This book was quite erotic and sexy. It was a quick read which really is my only complaint. It needs to be longer dammit! I am so in love with this series. Everything came together for me and I am so excited for the next book. I am giddy with joy to uncover the secret. I am also scared because it will be huge. I know everyone knows the Romeo and Juliet story and have probably read other renditions. But this is a must read. Kinrade makes this her own and I am sure Shakespeare would be happy. Add this to your must buy list....more
Madame Evangeline is at work yet again and this time she has gone way out of the ordinary for the lovely Danyka. Danyka is the modern day Amazon woman. She is very tall with gorgeous red hair, as endearing as she sounds, men are intimated by her. She can never find a date because she is too much for them. So one night her boss sends her an invite to a ball. She wants Danyka to have the night of a lifetime. Danyka may get more than she bargained for times two.
I really enjoyed this story. It was easy to connect with Danyka. She was very likeable and easy to relate to. I loved the connection between her and Galan. He is looking for a human woman to spend the rest of his life with. He has signed up for Madame Eve's service and hopes to find the right woman he can travel across the galaxy with. Danyka and Galan immediately hit it off. Danyka can barely believe he exists because technically he doesn't. He is a sexy alien. He is smitten with Danyka and wants her and he has no problem sharing her with his brother Volan. I loved them altogether, but this was mainly between Danyka and Galan. And I loved every second of it.
The story is short and sexy. It was an amazing rendezvous. The characters were so steamy. I love Sci-fi. I have been a fan since I was a child. So finding a story fulfilling a fantasy of steamy sex on a spaceship with not one, but two sexy aliens made my day. Warning: bring a fan.
I did have a problem or two with this story though. One: I got a feel for Danyka, but not for Galan and Volan. I loved them all, but I wish I got more on them personality wise. Although, I am very curious about Volan because he sees what is brewing between Galan and Danyka and he craves that too. I hope to find his story. Another problem, well not a problem but just odd, was Danyka's lack of reaction to Galan. She talks about Galan's skin and how it has a blue tint and she is not the least bit suspicious. I mean, I would be at least shocked by a sexy, blue alien talking to me. Just saying.
Overall this was yet another fun and sexy read by Jessica Subject. I always know I will get a great read from her. The characters are great and loveable especially Danyka. She is someone I would like to be friends with. The sex scenes are mind blowing. I had a lot of fun with this read. Make sure to get a copy, but don't read it at work....more
Oh Salidas never disappoints. It really says a lot about an author to make a book this exciting in less than 100 pages. I had a blast with this read. I love werewolves and this book is full of werewolves I will remember for a long time.
This book is a companion novella to Salidas Immortalis series. In this novella, we follow Alyssa's human best friend, Fallon and Fallon's werewolf lover, Aiden. They are so in love and would do anything for each other. But Fallon has a problem. Aiden is the Alpha and Fallon must decide whether she wants to become a werewolf or not. Aiden's pack won't accept Fallon since she is human and they won't respect a human Alpha female. Fallon has to choose between becoming a wolf (and risking possible death), breaking up with Aiden or Aiden leaving the pack altogether. Aiden has discovered members of his pack are willing to kill him and/or Fallon to get what they want. Fallon has to make a decision and fast before a potential war is started...all because of her.
I am a huge fan of Fallon and Aiden. They are amazing together and apart. I love that we got to follow Fallon. She felt very real to me. The way she reacts to certain situations is exactly how I would react. I love that even as a human, she has a backbone. I love her personality, she is saucy and funny. Her and Aiden play well off each other. They have wonderful chemistry and they are so sexy together. There scenes heat up the pages. Wow, those sex scenes were hot as hell. I love the villains in the book although I don't like that one of them is named Diana. Not cool Salidas, not cool! One character I definitely want more of is Aiden's brother, Brady. He was very mischievous and made me smile. I want more of him, he was a lot of fun.
I am just head over heels for this series. Salidas is a great writer. Like I said before, if you are a fan of Jeaniene Frost, you will love Salidas' work. The characters are worth rooting for. The plot is well paced and well written. I love the fights scenes and the sneakiness. And I love how Fallon handles both of them. Sadalis packs so much in this novella. There is so much tension, betrayal, suspense and much more and it never feel overwhelming. It is intense, but not overwhelming. If you have never read a book by Salidas, you need to get on It right now. You don't know what you are missing....more
Now, you know my love for the Black Dagger Brotherhood. That series has started my love for Paranormal Romance. And being a fan, I would love to introduce to you its cousin who is just as badass and sexy might I add. Dyer has given us an amazing new take on vampires and it was so good, I have every intention on getting the next book as soon as possible.
Breeana and Mel are just amazing together. Even though this is a paranormal romance, they feel like a real couple. When Mel tells her what he is, her reaction was epic. She love vampire romance novels and only her best friend knows that. So she immediately believes her friend has pulled a candid camera moment on her. You couldn't help but smile at this moment. It is probably a reaction I would have too. I would definitely believe it was a prank as well. I love Mel so much. He was a great complex character that was so buried under guilt, all he knew was fighting. He didn't really live. And given his backstory, you can see why. It will have you in tears. I love his scenes with Breeana, you can truly feel that weight getting lifted off of him every time they are together. Dyer really knows her characters and really knows how to draw you in. You feel a connection to them instantly.
I am also very curious about her other characters specifically Kal. Kal and Mel are best friends. They are always hanging out. Kal is the joker. He is such fun and I love the bromance between him and Mel. Kal may seem like a guy who only cares about video games and women, but he cares for Mel and can see what is brewing between him and Breeana. I love how much he looks out for him. There are more men in the house and we only get snippets, but I can't wait for more especially their captain Roarik. Goodness, he is scary. I would love to see him and Wrath in a fight. Just saying.
I couldn't put this book down. I love how protective Mel was of Breeana. He doesn't want that crazy she-demon coming after her especially given that Breeana is the only connection to the prophecy. I love how Dyer has thought that up and I can't wait to see what is to come. I love the connection between vampires and religion. Dyer has done an amazing job creating this story, it was brilliant to say the least.
I won't spoil anything, but I love where this book went and how it developed. Again, fans of BDB will adore this. This is a love story I intend to reread again. It was beautifully written. There was laughing and a lot of badassry. The romance feels real and will keep you turning the pages because you have to know how things will end. It is just too good not to. Not to mention, this book really stands on its own. It may remind me of BDB, but the characters and the world shine a different light on PNR and vampires as a whole. Highly recommended. This is within my top 5 favorite reads this year. It has made my vampire-loving heart very happy....more
Prince Aristides has been set up to be married to a woman he despises. But he devises a plan to make sure his best friend gets her. He wants to leave his home planet to explore the Emerald Planet, Elatia. It is a planet known for its special “services”. He visits to experience what they have to offer. But on his first night there, the woman he is supposed to be with, Xia, is very new to her job. But neither one can fight their feelings for each other and they quickly find in love. But unfortunately, she is an enemy of his planet and his family would never accept her. But he is willing to do anything to be with her.
Oh Jessica, how I love thee! What a beautiful story. Subject has given us yet another sexy and emotional story worth reading. I really enjoyed our characters. Aristides was a very smart man. I love how sets up his bride to be who is definitely not a woman I care to know. Xia is being trained in the art of erotic messaging. It isn't her calling to say the least. She is frightened out of her mind, but Aristides is nothing like how she thought he would be. I love how she doesn't immediately fall into this job, she wants more. But she thinks since she lives with and was adopted by a professional named Kalara, Xia feels this is all she has. I love that not only does Aristides want to be with her, but will help her get the life she has always wanted even though she is scared.
This was such a great, little story. I like to think of it like a space version of Pretty Woman without a lot of comedy, a little family drama and kidnapping. And yes, I actually like Pretty Woman. Subject truly knows her characters and make us love them in just 60 pages. It never feels jumbled or overwhelming. I won't spoil anything on how this ends, but I definitely need more. That last sentence got my adrenaline pumping. So curious! I definitely plan on getting the three other books in the Elatia series. All done by three different authors. Oh I love it! What an amazing world, well worlds. An Unexpected Return is a fun and sexy little read. Highly recommended!...more
J. R. Ward is back with one of my most anticipated books this year, Lover Reborn. We now follow Tohrment, the brother who wiped himself off the face of the Earth when his shellan and unborn child were murdered. He is back due to a fallen, selfish, and smartass angel, Lassiter. But he is nowhere close to being the vampire he use to be. He is on a rampage. Along with his rampage, he has been having horrible nightmares where his shellan and child aren't safe and warm in the Fades, but stuck in a dreary and dark place. He soon finds out that they are stuck in the In Between. If Tohrment can't learn to move on and let go, his shellan and child will be lost in oblivion forever.
Wooooow! Ward has delivered again. And that delivery came with some punches. People have questioned why is there only a man on the cover. There is always a guy plus his lady. Now it makes sense. This is more than a romance, it is a journey. A journey to get out of the past and move on. To let go and be free. And Tohrment's journey is one I was glad to be apart of.
Tohrment was well...truly tormented. He just couldn't get out of the cage he built around him. I love that No'One is the leading lady. She was soft spoken and kept to herself, but when Tohr and her are interacting, I love the personality she has. She belonged to a royal family before her heartbreaking story and you can tell. I love that she came to make amends with Xhex and understood and loved her no matter who her father was. Lover Reborn truly portrayed the hurdles Tohr and No'One must jump over, not only for their families and each other, but for themselves.
I really enjoyed the side story of Xhex and John. They are newlyweds, but they show that even though they are finally together, things aren't perfect. Not even close. John didn't like that Xhex was out fighting because he didn't want to end up like Tohr. Xhex has been an assassin and a fighter even before John was born (well technically given we know who John really is). So I love that we got that because Xhex is nothing like the other shellans, so it makes sense that their relationship would be different. I also must put out there, I am on Xhex's side. Ease up John, goodness!
I also love that we got a lot more of the Band of Bastards. We aren't getting much of the lessers as earlier in the series, but the B.O.B. definitely form a bigger threat. Xcor is more determined than ever. But I like that we see he has a heart...sort of. He definitely cares for his brothers. And someone more, but I won't say who. I love that we get more of Qhuinn and Blay. They truly can't stay far from each other. And I loved the friendship between Layla and Qhuinn and w get some insight into her life. I know Qhuinn and Blay's book is up next and I can see why. There are some life changing events that take place that will make their book very exciting. I can't wait.
And than we have newbie named Assail. I am not sure if he is a bad guy or good guy just yet. But even though he looks like any other super rich, over pampered guy, don't underestimate him. He kind of scares me. I believe Ward said he will play a bigger part in the BDB, I can't remember, but I am keeping my eyes peeled for sure. And then we have my absolute favorite character in this book, Lassiter. I am so in love with this guy. It is impossible not to love him. He is hilarious and truly unpredictable, both with his actions and the things that come out of his mouth. I am dying for him to get his own book. That would be the greatest thing ever.
Let me say it now, Lover Reborn will make you mad a couple of times especially close to the end. I don't think I cursed so loud at the ending of a book since Dreamfever. Not to mention the times I wanted to punch Tohr for being so stubborn. He did and said some things to No'One or others that deserved a slap or two. I understood his anger and how he felt he was deceiving Wellsie in some way. But come on man! I did love the literal punch in the nuts, that actually brought a tear to my eye.
Obviously I can go on forever, so I will slow my roll here. I absolutely loved this book. All the chaos and emotions really gets you going. Not to mention those sex scenes. Just a warning, don't read this at work. This book will really drive you nuts and it is so worth it. The BDB is one of the first PNR books I have read and it is still one of the best series out there. Again, if you haven't started this series, you really need to get on it now. Find out exactly why this Brotherhood has fans like me drooling....more
Dark Magic is about a princess named Devon. She has been conditioned to be the perfect wife. But that is not what she wants. She loves to read, she loves magic, and she loves to learn about things outside of sewing and how to keep a man happy. But the day comes when her castle is under attack by barbarians and her heartless father’s only defense; give the enemy’s leader Devon so he will stop the attack. Amongst those barbarians is a man named Galladar who is smitten by Devon and has the power to bring the war to a halt. So Princess Devon wants to find the dragon that can help her people and she has no problem sacrificing herself to him. Princess Devon will go from being a pampered princess into the woman she wants to be.
I really enjoyed this short story. It was sweet and hot all at once, I mean very hot. There was a beginning and end. I didn’t feel left out and sometimes I feel left out with short stories. The plot is pretty simple and predictable. But it was a nice. The characters were nice. Galladar was tough but I wish there was more of him. I really enjoyed Devon. She was raised to be a princess and do what she is told. But she yearned to be a scholar, to know about philosophy, politics, astronomy and more. I like that she never gave up. Even when she was in a very sticky situation, she fought tooth and nail and wound out on top, with a little help.
Overall, this is a 77 page story that was straightforward. It may be predictable, but it wasn’t boring and gives you a little bit of everything you need. So if you are looking for a pick me up for your paranormal romance needs, I recommend this short, sweet and sexy read to you....more
Thanks to the lovely author J. R. Barrett, I have had the opportunity to review some of her books. First down is Captured, an erotic science fiction romance. I must say, I didn’t know what I was getting into, but I was definitely enthralled by page 1.
I love the story Barrett has given us, it is quite an amazing concept. Mari, along with various other human women, is abducted from Earth and is going to be sold on another planet. They are considered nothing more than animals, so they are either sold as sex slaves or…entrees. I really didn’t expect it to be that dark, but it made me more intrigued. But Mari, being the strong woman she is, didn’t stay down like the rest of the “herd” and that makes Ekkatt curious.
Ekkatt is an alien, a humanoid, whose job is to travel to Earth and bring back the “food”, but he quickly learns that she is way more than that. While it is against the rules, he talks to the human and finds out that she is not the brainless animal he has been taught she would be. He finds out that she and the others are rational thinkers and he is now determined to escape with her even though it will cost them their lives.
I loved this book. I would gladly read it many times over. It was full of adventure and kept me on my toes. I really couldn’t put it down. The world (well worlds) Barrett has created were just brilliant. Even if you aren’t a fan of science fiction, there is still much to appreciate in the book. I love what Ekkatt and Mari learn from each other especially the sex. Barrett definitely knows how to write some sexy scenes. But I loved that neither of them complained about their situation. They know their lives are on the line and they were each other’s equals. Ekkatt never saw Mari as some weakling human, never thought “Hey I should have left her behind to save my own skin”. And Mari never saw Ekkatt as a monster; she understood why he did what he did.
The only complaint I have is that I wish there was a little more conflict between Ekkatt and those he was running from. I mean we get one main villain, but I would have loved if him and Ekkatt had a brawl of some kind. The guy got what he deserved and I was happy, but still. I also would have liked more to the ending. I mean I love where they end up, but just a few more pages where we get a sense of the place and the people. Maybe a little something about Ekkatt’s estranged “family”. I know, a little too Hollywood, but I couldn’t help it. Still, it was a great ending.
I highly recommend this book to SFR lovers and if SFR isn't for you, still read it just because it is a great read. It is sexy and fun. It is a great story, full of great characters, adventure, and survival. Barrett has created some amazing worlds that I hope you all will enjoy reading about. Make sure this is on your TBR list....more
A couple of weeks ago, I was asked to review this book from the author herself, Mahalia Levey. I gladly accepted, of course. I was looking so forward to this, but as a reviewer, I must give my honest opinion. I wanted to like Courting Disaster, but it sadly fell short for me.
Courting Disaster is about a group of sisters that are witches, well witches in training. Our main character, Sorcha, seems to be the most daring. She raised a few zombies, but had no idea how to put them back. So she has to call the witches temporary guardian, Macsen, to save them. Macsen is a gargoyle. Gargoyles are given one purpose; protect and serve the witches. Their kind is being punished for something their ancestors have done long ago. Macsen is there to watch them while their old guardian is out for a while. He has feelings for Sorcha and vice versa. But since he is a gargoyle, them being mated is out of the question. The witches use them, but don’t stay with since they are nothing but slaves. Sorcha wants to change all of that.
I loved the premise of this book. I love the idea of gargoyles being nothing but second class citizens. Sorcha has a talk with her mother and it is then she learns how unfairly the gargoyles have been treated. I love that Sorcha is the one to try and change the injustice done to them.
As much as I love the premise, I had quite a bit of issues with this. First off, this is a 79 page book. We meet a little over ten characters. We know they all have a story, some kind of history, but we don’t learn any of it. This book would have been better if it was scaled down with the characters and we focused mostly Macsen or Sorcha. My biggest problem was actually the villain, Bael. He is Macsen’s cousin. He is a gargoyle that lives in their dark realm. We only meet him once, but he tries to kidnap Sorcha and gets away with one of Sorcha’s sisters. Thing is, we don’t know why he wants them. He is just going around stealing them or having someone else take them.
I also wasn’t that big of a fan of the sex scenes. They were hot, but they weren’t as romantic as I wanted them to be and they were quick. Now I am no prude. I love a good erotic romance. But even though I know Macsen and Sorcha have feelings for each other, the descriptions in the scenes and some of what was said between them wasn’t sexy. Now I have had this discussion before on Twitter with another booklover about this, about certain language used in sex scenes. When you use words like p***y or c**t, I don’t find that sexy. Those are words you use in a porno (not that I have seen a porno mind you, I am just guessing *awkward silence*). My point is, those are words you don’t use toward someone you love. At least in my opinion. Maybe it is just me. What do you guys think?
Another thing I wasn’t a fan of was the overall development of the plot. We don’t have much. This book is about Macsen and Sorcha and her helping him. The thing is, we are given some near the end with zombies and the kidnapping, but we don’t see it from their point of view. We focus on Sorcha and then nothing happens. We are completely left out of the action, we are on the sidelines. And I am not sure this actually had an ending because it was incomplete. I can’t even say it was a cliffhanger because it didn’t feel like it.
Overall, this was just okay. It may be a short story, but short stories can be complete and this wasn’t. If this was longer, I think it would have been great because again, the premise is great. But there was so much left out, so much unfinished. I hope Ms. Levey writes a sequel, there is something here, the worldbuilding is there. This is supposed to be a part of a six-part novella, so I am hoping we come back to this world and get more out of all these characters. That being said, the buildup for this fell short and I was left a bit disappointed....more
Wow, what a story this was. I have been hearing about this series for a while and since I am nuts for sexy vampires, I gave it a go. I love finding books that do something a little different with vampire mythology and this was no exception. Wright and her sexy vamps are going to fit nicely on my bookshelf.
I am a huge fan of Alexander. I was thrown off by him at first because I thought he was possessed or something. The guy was scary as hell. But he grows on you quickly. Him and his brothers have been through a lot and they are very close. Alex is the oldest and he does his best to protect them from a life they fought tooth and nail to escape. I love these sort of family stories, ever since starting the Black Dagger Brotherhood, I have been on the hunt for them. And this was a great one. The woman that saved Alex, Sara, is a doctor who is very determined and curious. She really fights for what she wants and that is clear when she spends her life trying to save her brother Gray who has mentally checked out.
I love Alex's brothers Nicholas and Lucian. Nicholas has his head on straight and is the peacemaker out of the three. I love that Wright gave us a little glimpse into his past and it is very bleak and destructive. I am bouncing up and down for his book. Already added in my library queue. Then there's Lucian. Oh Lucian. He is the bad seed out of the three. He is mean, wild and unpredictable. But he was also likable. He has a very dark sense of humor and I can't wait for more from him either.
I was very invested in this story. I love the idea of PureBlood and Impure vampires. Pureblood vampires are born and are privileged. Impure are the ones that were turned and are treated like servants. One Impure named Ethan didn't like that. He is an Impure with the power of a PureBlood from a superior vamp. He wants to create an army of Impures to take out the PureBlood vampires. He is kidnapping both kinds of vamps and humans alike and having them impregnated. I love where this story went and how badass it was. Man, I love a good gun fight. I am dying for more. Someone is betraying the PureBloods and I want to know who.
As much as I love the plot however, it did take me a bit to get into it. The book has its information overload moments and things were a bit confusing at first. I just wish things were explained a little quicker because you do feel left in the dark a few times. Also, the language for some of the sex scenes might throw you off, they did for me. I already had the discussion on how I am not a fan of the "C" word, but luckily, the story was rich and intriguing enough for me to look past that.
Besides that, this was a great read. It was very sexy and suspenseful. I loved the ending, quite a bit comes to light that put a smile on my face while others leave your mouth hanging open. The characters are so incredible. I want more of Dillon, her and Sara definitely have a dynamic that is pretty interesting. Also Gray and Bronwyn who may give Lucian a run for his money. Overall, don't miss out on this one. This is a series worth devouring. ...more
I started this series a while back and haven’t had the time to continue it. Finally started book 3, Seduced by Moonlight, and it was really good. We get to meet more hot fairy men and Merry shows us she truly deserves to be princess.
Seduced by Moonlight takes place a little after A Caress of Twilight, Merry is with her guards/lovers and is trying to stay out of the paparazzi. She is still trying to get a baby from her men and it hasn’t happened yet. They are still trying to protect themselves because Merry is still being targeted and she wants more allies from the Kurag and his allies. While working to stop a war, Merry finds that she is getting powers that make her guards more powerful through sex. Merry doesn’t know how it is happening and doesn’t know she is becoming so powerful that she ends up with a once lost and powerful Fae relic.
I really enjoyed this book. Hamilton is so creative when it comes to creating different worlds. Her take on L.A. is so out of the box. I love it. I love that the world, well America, is okay with the Fae out in the open as long as they don’t break the rules. This is what Merry and the Fae are fighting for because America is the last place that will accept the Fae and a lot of them like living on Earth. But that promise is getting slimmer and slimmer.
Now I did have a couple of issues with this book. The pace was pretty slow for me and the book is quite long. Honestly, half of the book could be cut out and you would still get a good story. I mean, it isn’t a bad thing, just some stuff that didn’t add much to the story. I am not talking about the sex which this book was full of and I really enjoyed. There was a lot more compared to the previous two. But the sex added to the story because the men are getting all their god-like abilities back. Abilities they haven’t had in centuries. Can’t wait to see how they will all work out later on.
Now the plot really kicked off for me about halfway in the book. We find out the Queen Andais is crazy and has somehow become crazier and more homicidal. We find that someone has put a spell on her that has made her even worse. Some of the Fae already want Merry dead because they think she is no better than a human, just a half-breed that doesn’t deserve to be on the throne. But it is worse when they try to go after the queen because it could be her very own son, Cel (who is imprisoned), that might have sent someone to poison his mother. I won’t spoil it, but the finale showdown was surprising and epic.
I am trying my best not to give anything away, but this was pretty good. So far, the second one is a favorite for me. But I love this series. Merry and her men are fantastic together. In this book, we get more Dole who is my favorite of all of her men. Seduced by Moonlight had a bit of extras, but it wasn’t boring by any means. Just the action kicks up when we finally meet up with crazy Aunt Andais who has got to be the most disturbing female character in history. No joke, you would have better luck with the Devil than Queen Andais. ...more
Nalini Singh, for those of you that don’t know, has quickly become a powerhouse in the paranormal romance world. That is because this series is irresistible. I started Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changelings #1) last year. I could not put it down. If I was doing a chore or something, I found myself pausing just to pick up the book to read a few more lines or something. And with the second installment, Visions of Heat, it was no different.
Visions of Heat is about a jaguar changeling named Lucas. We meet him in the first book and he was a bit different from all the changelings given that he is a jaguar and the others are leopards. Sort standoffish, silent but deadly. But when a Psy named Faith sneaks off from her home aka prison to get help from the only Psy to escape the net, Lucas is both in awe and suspicious of her. He doesn’t trust the Psy, it has taken him a while to warm up to the only other Psy in their ranks, Sascha (Lucas’ mate). So he thinks that she may be a spy for the Psy.
Faith is one of the few F-Psy in the Net. She is able to see the future (the F is for Foresight). She has been conditioned to use her abilities to profit for the Psy. She isn’t an everyday employee; her ability has made her and her fellow Psy billionaires. But what turns into a usual job becomes very dangerous for Faith when she has a vision of someone dying. That someone is her own sister. Battling with the fact that she is Psy and she shouldn’t have feelings towards what happened to her sister. Faith figures out a way to leave the premises to talk to Sascha since she lives with the Changelings and she might be able to help her. Faith soon learns that the people she has known all of her life have been lying to her about everything.
Man, Singh is incredible. I have said it before, when it comes to great alpha males; Singh comes up with the best of them. I love Vaughn. He was put a naughty little grin on my face. Good Lord, just hot as hell. I love how much we learn about him and why he is the way he is. He may come off cruel, but there is a reason he has trust issues. His story nearly brought me to tears. So sad. I liked Faith. She was so unsure of herself and actually being outside with other people and scared of what would happen if she was touched. I felt really sorry for her because of the lies she was given. It was because of that she witnessed her own sister dying. She was incredibly brave taking on creatures that she was told will kill her and just being in the outside world when she was also told it would kill her. Really loved Faith and I loved Vaughn for never underestimating her and treating her like the machine she was raised to be.
I love all the characters which all make an appearance from the last one in this. But this book was essentially about Faith and Vaughn. The tension between Faith and Vaughn is so fantastic. I love seeing how incredibly flirtatious Vaughn is towards Faith. I couldn’t believe she resisted his charms for as long as she did. It took a few pages for me and I was at his mercy. Like I said, I loved Vaughn!
I love the plot and where it took us. Vaughn kind of scared me near the end. Anyone messes with Faith, they were sure to lose a head. I don’t want to give much away, but we find out that Faith’s ability is keener than we thought. The connection is just creepy. But I won’t spoil anything. Although I must say, the way it ended wasn’t my absolute favorite. But I think it was done the way it was to make room for book 3 and the next Psy they will follow who is actually a man this time. Also because the Psy would have lots to lose if they go crazy with trying to capture Faith, which they learned the hard way. Still it didn’t ruin the rest of the book; I just wanted something a little bigger is all.
I highly recommend this series if you are looking for a great paranormal romance. It is a wonderful and creative sci-fi world Singh has created. I can’t say it enough, if you haven’t started reading Nalini Singh’s work, you are missing out on genius. Action packed, sexy, and completely hard to resist; all things that make Visions of Heat so amazing....more
I am an Anita Blake fan. Though I must admit I was scared to start this because I have heard from some that Narcissus In Chains (book 10) is where things change for the worse in the series. Well, that is a thought I just don’t agree with. I loved this book and to be honest, this was actually one of my more favorite books in this amazing series.
Narcissus In Chains starts off when Anita gets the call from Gregory, one of the wereleopards in the pack she is protecting. He calls to tell her Nathaniel is in deep trouble and the fellow leopard responsible for him up and left him alone. But things become even worse when Anita finds out that not only Nathaniel is in trouble, but Gregory gets in trouble. Anita finds out that they are being held against their will and won’t be released until she goes to Narcissus in Chains (club) to “settle” things.
Like I said, I loved this book. Anita, Jean-Claude and Richard complete the ritual for their triumvirate. Unfortunately, them sharing even more power has a bigger effect on Anita. She gains a hunger from Jean-Claude, a sexual hunger, the ardeur. This is where the complaints come in. Fans have been (and still are) up in the air about the sex. Well, you know what? Get over it. I am sorry, but Anita is an adult, they are all adults. Sure Anita is no longer the celibate vixen anymore, but she still kicks more ass than anybody else. And that is what matters.
I really loved the storyline to this book although I am not sure what to make of Narcissus. He is not really a bad guy (I use the word “guy” loosely), but he sure as hell doesn’t help a situation. If he actually cared what was happening in his club, half the things that happen in this book would have gone very differently. But the real bad guy doesn’t show up until halfway to the book, so in hindsight, I can’t blame Narcissus. Well I can’t blame most of the weres, the bad guy gave me chills. The things he did to other weres scared the crap out of me. That is the way Hamilton knows how to do it, give us Urban Fantasy with lots of Horror.
What I loved most about this was that we see that Anita is finally accepting her role. I read somene’s comment about reading this as a parody because she is part vampire, wereleopard, and werewolf. Obviously the person didn’t take the time out to read the series. Nonetheless, for those that don’t know, Anita is not really part anything, but because of her natural powers, she is more of a vessel. She gets her powers from Jean-Claude and Richard; with those powers she is able to do more things than any human (and some non-human). Because of Richard, she gets his rage, his beast. Because of Jean-Claude, she gets his hunger and speed and other things I can’t say because it will be a bit of a spoiler. Point is she has grown into it all. At first, she didn’t like it and clearly wasn’t comfortable with any of it, but I think this book showed how much she is willing to compromise for her and her “family”.
Now for what I didn’t like. Richard. Beautiful, sexy, boy scout Richard. At one point in the book, it actually seemed like he was accepting who he is supposed to be and what he is. But it was a ruse. He can’t accept it so he takes it out on Anita and becomes the biggest douche known to man. I love Richard, but there were countless times I wanted to reach in the book and just strangle the hell out of him. That is why I was so happy Hamilton wrote in Micah. He has Anita figured out quickly, maybe because he believes she is his mate (and technically she is) and he accepts her and himself. Instead of fighting with himself and his responsibilities (he is Alpha to the leopards in a different county or something like that), he is what he is and doesn’t blame anyone for it. Unlike Richard, who is strong and tough, but thinks it is useless because he will be a monster and he doesn’t want to be that at all. When we get to the finale in the book, what Richard chose to do (well not to do) really really pissed me off. It showed just how far he is willing to go to stop being what he is and who is he is willing to take with him, which is Jean-Claude and Anita. If one dies, the other two die along with them.
Overall, I enjoyed the hell out of this book. Anita hasn’t gone anywhere, she is more powerful than ever. We get more Nathaniel (which I loved), he is more a man instead of the brainless doormat he was in previous books. This book is full of lots of action and horror, all the things we expect from the series. We get a few surprises in this book that I wouldn’t have imagined and some were pretty disturbing. I hear what some have been saying and well, this series is still a favorite. No way am I putting down this series. ...more
First story of this anthology was Tangled Tinsel by Vivian Arend. Now IReview originally posted here: Offbeat Vagabond
Tangled Tinsel by Vivian Arend
First story of this anthology was Tangled Tinsel by Vivian Arend. Now I have never read a book by Vivian Arend, but I have always seen her name around, specially for Erotica. Well Erotic doesn't even describe it, just downright nasty. And well, I loved every last minute of it.
Tangled Tinsel starts off with us following our male lead, Kyle Branegan, who is a werecat. He is hiding and on the hunt...for a fellow playmate. That is when he comes across Eloise Scott. Another werecat that he is sure can't resist him. But Kyle soon finds out that she had his number way before their little "get together" in a lingerie shop. Eloise (El) is an undercover cop who was sent to tail and keep tabs on Kyle. They know he is in the middle of a case (not they way they think) and he needs watching since he can't keep his hands to himself.
While they are stuck together, El has to visit her family for Christmas. El is not the biggest fan of her ridiculously wealthy family and has tried to avoid them, but can't any longer. So while El and Kyle are together at her folks place, they end up together after El finally comes to terms that she is a cat, not a human. It is okay to just let go. While there, they also get a surprise visit from Kyle's uncle, who he can't stand and to get his uncle off his back and not think he is after El's family's money, he announces they are engaged to be married.
This was a great story. Plenty of ups and downs between these two. I liked Kyle even though he was a manwhore to the max and El had her own issues, but I liked her too. She has been trying so hard to live in the human world. Didn't like her cat side because she wants her independence and didn't want to be like other female cats barefoot and constantly pregnant. Seriously, her parents needed to slow down. Goodness! Kyle was great too, I like that he helped El break her shell and actually changed in the book.
I did have a couple of problems though. I wish that we got to know more of Kyle's uncle. It was so random with him at the house. How and who invited him? We know it wasn't Kyle because he hates him which in turn means he doesn't talk about him much. So how? Then there was the almost fight at the New Years' Party. Kyle said it seems like his uncle was almost looking for someone to fight with, but we are never told why exactly.
Nonetheless, this was a great story. It took a turn that I didn't see coming towards the end and it made me enjoyed it even more. I love books that do that. When you think you have it all figured it and just like that, you find out you didn't know anything. It was a fun surprise. I highly recommend this if you want a great story and you aren't offended by very graphic and detailed sex scenes. Vivian Arend is definitely not a shy woman. Wow!

No Angel by Vivi Andrews
This was the second story in the anthology and this was hands down my favorite of the three. What a story! I love how unique it was. Never read anything from Vivi Andrews either, but I have added her on my must reads list after reading this.
No Angel is about a young woman named Sasha Christian who lives in Los Angeles. Sasha is the daughter of the world's most beloved "angel" her Hollywood actress mother, Layla Christian. She hates the recognition, hates the attention and hates airhead blondes from Oklahoma who think being rich and famous is the key to happiness. But while on the phone being hassled by her mother over not ever getting the chance to meet Sasha's boyfriend (Layla believes he was made up), Sasha has the sinking feeling, he is going to bolt for good.
Sasha's boyfriend, Jay, is in trouble. He is half-demon and half-human. But he hasn't told Sasha that. Not only that, but he is on a very tight schedule. Since he is a demon, he has limited time on earth. Demons aren't allowed on Earth on Christmas Day. Thing is, Jay doesn't want to go back to Hell with his ruthless mother who just happens to be the wife of the devil himself. Jay is in love with Sasha and doesn't want to lose her, but telling her he is a demon and his stepdad is the devil, will definitely put a damper on things.
When Jay finally gets the courage to tell Sasha the real reason he can't be with Sasha on Christmas, it is too late. He is grabbed through a vortex to Hell in the middle of her kitchen while baking cookies. She is in shock, but to add to that, she gets a visit from an angel. This angel drops an even bigger bomb on Sasha to let her know she is God's Champion of Virtue and if she wants Jay back, she will have to go into Hell and save Jay or he will be there forever.
I could talk about this story forever. It was so amazing. It was complex and simple all at once. The characters were amazing. I absolutely loved Sasha. She reminds me of myself. Nice, but is not afraid to show her edge and push back when she needs to. I loved Jay as well. The fact that he is from Hell and doesn't seem to have an evil bone in his body is insane.
I also love that this story really takes what we think about Hell and twists it a little. When and how Sasha gets to Hell was definitely unique and funny. With such a topic as Hell, this book can be surprisingly light. It is full of humor, action, and apparently lets us know Lucifer isn't so bad.
Like I said, this was a definite win for me. Only disappointment for me was that it wasn't longer. I would have loved to have read more of Sasha and Jay. Sasha is just a great heroine. Takes a lot for a woman to go to Hell to save her boyfriend. Nonetheless, highly recommended.

Freeze Line by Moira Rogers
Now for the very reason I requested this anthology, Moira Rogers. Rogers is no stranger to amazing paranormal romance. I saw her name and knew I had to get this because I have read other works from her and knew I would love it. Unfortunately, this wasn't a love for me, a like, but not love.
Freeze Line is about a werewolf named Shane Sullivan who lives on his own. Doesn't have friends or neighbors. So while out in the ridiculous winter, he stumbles on a witch named Nadia. She is on the verge of dying since she was above the freeze line. The closer to the line, the less powerful you are, which is what Shane wants since he doesn't like his werewolf side. But in order to help save Nadia's life, he has to go further South and he is afraid to lose control, of both his wolf and with Nadia.
Now my issues. My problem, the biggest problem, were the back stories. Not just for the characters, but for the environment itself. When we meet Nadia, she is bruised and beaten into an inch of her life. We find out that she was either kidnapped or sold and somehow escaped her captors. Problem is, we don't find out who or why. All we know is that she was in a lab and was being studied and somehow got away. That's it. We do actually find out why Shane resents his wolf side so much and I was happy to get that, made me feel sorry for him.
Then there's the environment. We don't know exactly where they are and even more, we don't know what exactly happened to America. California is not California, it is called the Gulf of California. Shane says he has heard of the place, California. They are in a time where everything is split up into tribes or regions. It says that they are in the middle of a 21st Century ice age, but how did America itself change? I mean it seems like there was an apocalypse of some kind, but we don't know for sure. Hell, we don't really know the year is exactly. Is it now or sometime way later in the 21st century?
It has taken me a couple of days to do this review because I was debating what to give this. I won't line. As much as I enjoy Moira Rogers work, I was tempted to give this 2 stars, but at the end of the day, this was about the romance. I did love it. Shane has his demons and is afraid of his wolf side, afraid of hurting people (given his story, can't blame him) and I like that Nadia doesn't push him into it, I would have hated her for that. There is an attraction between them that was great because they really defended each other. Happy Nadia wasn't a damsel in distress, she really was a warrior and could take Shane head on if she had to.
Overall, this was a good story, despite my complaints. I just wish I didn't feel like there was a whole chunk missing out of this story. When I read, I like being engulfed in a new world, I couldn't get engulfed in this world since I didn't really know where I was and what I should and shouldn't do. Hope that made sense. There will be those who love the simplicity of the story, which is great. But I just wish there was more development.
Oh Nicholas, how I love thee? I am absolutely obsessed with this series. Alex's book was a great debut and this sequel was even better. I couldn't put this book down. It was such a rush, a very sexy rush. If you are a fan of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, you will be a fan of the Roman brothers.
I love that this book really gave us more backstory. I felt like we missed some of that from the first one with Alex. We heard a little bit of Nicholas' story in the first book. Here, we get a bunch more of him and his past. We find out his past was very dark and destructive. What's worse, is that he hasn't really escaped his past and he has kept it from his brothers specifically Lucian. He was the one who saved Nicholas in the first place so many years ago. I really enjoyed the first book, but due to the intensity of this story, this one was much better.
We also have our heroine, Kate, who is definitely going on my badass chick list. She is a prisoner at a place named Mondrar, but they let her because she teaches in their vampire-gated community. Tragedy strikes when looking over one of her students who is Nicholas' long lost son. She escapes to take his son to him, but Nicholas doesn't believe her. I love how tough Kate is. Nicholas was giving her a lot of crap and she manages she give it right back to him. She may not be a trained warrior like him, but she was very smart and cunning. I love how we see her transition in the story and hearing her story about how she ended up in prison. Kate and Nicholas aren't all that different. They were an amazing match, truly perfect for one another.
Besides the story of Kate and Nicholas, we have more from creepy Ethan and from his master. His master will do whatever it takes to force the Romans through Morpho (the change that makes them Breeding Males and makes them full vampires). We do learn who it is and I was correct in my assumption of the culprit. We just need to know why he wants them changed so badly. He is definitely planning something, we just don't know what.
Now this may be Nicholas' book, but the highlight for me was Lucian. I knew from book 1 he would be a favorite. That couldn't be more true now. The dialogue between him and his brothers is just so much fun. He cracks me up even though his brothers talk about how dangerous he is. He definitely seems more bloodthirsty than the others, but we are yet to see why they call him the devil. I love how he keeps fighting his feelings for Bronwyn. She is the scientist we meet in book 1. They have great chemistry even though they act like they hate each other. But given the way this book actually ended, I think eyes will be opened. Seriously, that was a great ending. My jaw dropped then I burst out laughing.
This is a wonderful sequel. It was better than the first book. The storylines were amazing and flowed together beautifully. We get a couple of twists that are very exciting and I can't wait to see how they will develop. We get more laughs and amazing steamy scenes that will have you fanning yourself. Whether you are a hardcore BDB fan like myself or you really love PNR, I highly recommend you check this series out. You are sure to get a treat.
