Assuming you can suspend your disbelief for long enough to accept a teenage Nobel laureate, the scenario is even quite plausible - featuring funding politics and corporate cover- ups a plenty. Fun and engaging; I'm looking forward to the next one.(less)

Meanwhile, back home on Tofarn, their leaving hasn't magically resolved all of society's problems, so the story unfolds in parallel on two ends of an interstellar comm link. I've loved the concept of the twin-bred pairs since the first novel (which you should definitely read first, if you haven't), and their special abilities are further developed in interesting directions The only down-side is that the two storylines, while sometimes intersecting, don't exactly feel related. Other sections of this book feel like they're there to set up storylines for a future sequel, which I hope is in the works.(less)

Finley is a sharp and not always heroic heroine, and I loved her new best friend, the brilliant inventor Emily. Finley's relationships with the group, as well as with crime lord Jack Dandy, were entertaining and fairly believable - while the adventure plot was really completely unbelievable, but in an exciting and thoroughly compelling manner. Fun, light reading.(less)

I found this to be an enjoyable, low-effort read, but I struggled to care about the characters, who often came across as unsympathetic and unlikeable.(less)

The people of the city take this strange geographical feature somewhat for granted, so the last thing this husband-and-wife team expects is for a case to take them into the skies. I loved the relationship between the two happily married, but very different, characters of Bettina and Arjuna. And I was immediately sucked in by the plot - even rereading the novel for a second time, I didn't want to put it down before I'd unwrapped all the mysteries of the island.

The heroine of the piece is Clara, a young woman with mechanical skills, great strength of character, and all the common sense required to get a stubborn racing driver through his day. When he gets into more than his usual trouble, however, Clara has to use all her wit and all her friends to help him survive. I love strong female leads and Clara was perfect.
