Georgia sent many, many soldiers to the "regular" Confederate States Army, and I had no idea that then - Gov. Joe Brown was very much against conscription. He believed soldiers from his state should be allowed to remain in Georgia for its defense.
The book was a good read and not too dry, as many books of this subject are. I feel a bit more knowledgeable now, and that's a good thing! (less)

I, ever the skeptic, was surprised to find a couple of instances where I actually believed and felt for Christian. And while the subconscious and inner goddess continued to entertain me, I'm a little hesitant to read book three. Notwithstanding the obvious exception of about a page, I thought this was a nice place to say THE END. Curiosity will probably get the best of me, though.(less)

A mystery surrounding a tombstone will grab me every time. The only complaint I have is how everything seemed to come together in just a few pages at the end. I like to get little bits and pieces along the way. I think the author attempted to do this, but not clear enough for me. (Or maybe I just didn't "get it" as quickly as I should!) All in all, I enjoyed it well enough to plan on reading the next one.(less)

I think another reviewer pointed this out, and I agree: the author missed a great opportunity to really delve into some of the highly emotional and heart wrenching trials the main character went through. I don't think she (the character) was fully developed, either. And finally, I didn't care for the ending. It was more unfinished business.(less)

Since Oprah has brought it back to my attention, maybe I'll have to give it a re-read.(less)

I'm enjoying the series and will be moving on to book three. My only critique is I would have liked less paranormal and more family information. And the end was little too "action packed." (less)

I truthfully had to suffer boredom and force myself to read it. I honestly liked the story, but it took the author a chapter to tell what could be told in a paragraph. Maybe I'm just not a "classics" girl.(less)

I actually laughed out loud more than once, and the last quarter of the book was so good I plan on reading the sequel.(less)
