I lurk in the dark, but cannot be seen. Where the smell of death is often keen. Not alive, but still around. In the shadows I can be found. I know secrets I cannot tell. Must find a way to escape this HELL! If I fail to break this ancient hex You too will be NEXT! - written by Beckie (me)
While pondering my words of what to say about this amazing book, this poem popped into my head, so I thought I would share it with you all since it's about the book. Now I dabble with writing poetry, and not often at that but for some reason this poem began to form in my mind. I like it quite well, don't you? It's written as if Delia is the author. Delia, our main character in the story was once alive but now is dead. In the beginning of the book Delia comes to inherit a rather large home from her recently deceased great-great Aunt Cordelia. Delia, her parents and her little sister Janie arrive at the home only to find out it's much more than a house but a former insane asylum used to house troubled girls properly named, Hysteria Hall.
On the first night inside Hysteria Hall things are already starting to get weird. Delia is hearing things in the night and seeing things from the corner of her eye. Screams come from down the hall from her sister Janie where she is found bound to her bed with straps. Delia wants to leave, like yesterday but is denied by her parents who feel she is just making things up. Little do they know things are about to get a LOT worse because something or someone is not about to let Delia leave.
Waking up the next morning Delia feels something is off. She hears screams from her family and goes to find out what has happened. She gets the shock of her life when she sees a dead body in a broken heap on the ground outside the house. A body she knows all too well...her own. Now devastated, scared and feeling lost Delia will have to rely on the other inhabitants who haunt the halls of Hysteria. Delia learns something very powerful and very evil has been killing residents of Hysteria Hall and if she is not careful her family will be next. She will need to unlock the mystery of the asylum before it's too late. Who can Delia trust and who is not who they appear to be?
You'll need to read the book to find out what lies next.
I am and forever will be a huge fan of the horror genre, not only in books but in movies as well. I love to be scared. I love the uncertainty of what will happen next. There's just something so fun and thrilling out being frightened. Katie Alender is my go-to author when I need a good scary read. The first books I read by her were the "Bad Girls Don't Die" series and let me tell you I was on the edge of my seat throughout the series. All three books I proudly own and have re-read. Katie is the QUEEN of Horror and knows how to masterfully craft her stories into something darkly haunting and originally frightening. Without a shadow of a doubt, The Dead Girls of Hysteria Hall is my all time new favorite horror novel. It thrilled me, it gave me chills and at the end had me in tears.
This unforgettable read is one I highly recommend to anyone who loves a good scare, exquisite world-building, and a story that will leave you breathless.
The Dead Girls of Hysteria Hall is one not to miss....you may be "sorry" you did. *evil laugh* ...more
At first glace, Sweet Unrest looked to be a perfect read for this time of year, Halloween. The cMy review can also be found @ Bittersweet Enchantment
At first glace, Sweet Unrest looked to be a perfect read for this time of year, Halloween. The cover is definitely creepy and very unique with name of the book beautifully designed to fix into the gate which is the main focus of the cover. Going into reading the book my expectations were at a all time high and after finishing it in a mere two days I am glad they were. I fell head over heal in love with Sweet Unrest. It was everything I wanted and more.
The story begins as Lucy Aimes and her family move to Louisiana because of her Father's job. He was chosen to curate and direct a antebellum sugar plantation outside of New Orleans. Lucy is not thrilled by the move but more so angry at being uprooted. She wanted nothing more than to remain in Chicago and attend an art institute, taking pictures, her one true passion.
As Lucy and her family get settled in their new home, a large estate which looks to have quite a history behind it. Soon Lucy meets a girl her age named, Chloe. Chloe is the daughter of a women who works for the sugar plantation. Lucy comes to find out that Chloe is into or believes in voodoo and knows a old woman who supposable is a voodoo queen. Lucy doesn't believe in such things, and is determined to show Chloe that these things just don't exist. Although after meeting Mama Legba, Lucy starts to wonder is anything this old lady said is true.
Lucy has had a recurring dream for as long as she can remember, although as of late her dream has been kept a bay, until now... While walking the grounds, Lucy sees a boy close to her age. He's breathtakingly beautiful and oh so mysterious but when Lucy tries to follow him into the woods he seeming vanishes. Days later "Fate" decides intervene and Lucy gets to meet this mysterious man. She learns his name is Alexander, he's french, and by the way he speaks it's as if he comes from another time. After meeting Alex, something happens to Lucy. He dreams have gotten worse, and more intense, scarier but what worries Lucy even more is now she is dreaming of Alex. A man she barely knows, a man who holds many secrets...and a woman who surprising looks a lot like Lucy herself. What do these dreams mean and why can't she seem to turn them off.
Lucy now struggles to understand what her dreams mean, who really is Alex and how voodoo and magic play a large part in it all.... The truth, will leave you breathless...
For me one of the biggest things I loved about the book was the romance between Lucy and Alex, and how the subject of past lives plays into the story. I have always been a huge fan of books about reincarnation, and finding your mate in the next life. It's so romantic. Just seeing Alex and Lucy connect during the course of the book was so raw and emotional for me. The ending had me in a full out crying fest, like seriously balling my eyes out. I loved the all of the characters in the story, even the side characters like Chloe and Mama Legba. Everyone played their part perfectly throughout the book.
I also really enjoyed the concept of voodoo and magic playing such a large part in the book. I've never read any books with this topic in it and I really think it gave the story such depth and excitement. Sweet Unrest was totally unlike anything I've read before. My only problem I had with the book was towards the middle the pacing seems to slow down some and drag but it wasn't so off putting that I stopped reading.
I would without a doubt recommend Sweet Unrest to anyone who enjoys stories about past lives, ghosts, magic, and an epic love story which teaches us TRUE LOVE never dies. ...more
I am a sucker for a good ghost story. AnytReview orignally posted @ Bittersweet Enchantment Also win a copy of the book as well. Click the link above.
I am a sucker for a good ghost story. Anything where one of the characters in the book is dead is a huge plus for me. I have always loved movies and books where someone is dead and needs to move on but won't until their unfinished business is complete on earth. Examples: Ghost (movie), Casper (movie), or even Hereafter (book). Those are only a few of my favorites. After reading Notes from Ghost Town I can now say this book fits right in with those. There were so many emotions going through my head while reading. The story really tugged on my heart-strings and by the end I was still in awe by what really happen....
Olivia Tithe is in love with her best friend Lucas Stern. She has loved him since the day they meet and even now in death. Lucas was murdered and the one suspect just so happens to be Olivia's Mother. Her mother is not well. She is living in a mental institution waiting for the courts ruling. After Lucas's died everything chanced for Olivia, her life, her family, and her sight. Olivia is now color blind, she sees only in shades of black, grey, and white. On a day like no other her lost love Lucas appears to her as a ghost. At first Olivia thinks she is going crazy like her Mother and refuses to believe what she is seeing. Lucas does not give up and appears to her once more and does something to make Olivia believe that this is real. While Lucas has forgotten a lot of his life and some of his memories have been lost there is one thing he does remember that Olivia's Mother did NOT kill him. The killer is still out there.....
With her Mothers trial coming up soon, Olivia must uncover the truth of who really killed Lucas to clear her mothers name and the one person who can help is dead.
Will Lucas's true killer be found before it't to late? The ending will leave you speechless....
I was instantly drawn to the story. From page one until the very end I was completely immersed in this book. There was so much raw emotions put into the story. The author's writing style is almost lyrical. The words just flow off the page and into your heart. Olivia is such a strong willed protagonist. Even through all she had to endure she never faulted in trying to find the truth of who killed Lucas. Her love for him guided Olivia along the way. I almost always find something I don't like about a certain character in a book but Notes from Ghost town simply put was perfect. I think the only thing that keep me from giving the book a 5 star rating was that the pacing was a little slow during the middle. Although I flew through the ending trying to solve this mystery for myself.
Notes from Ghost Town is a beautifully haunting tale that will keep you guessing who the killer is. Get your box of tissues ready because this epic love story is a guaranteed tearjerker....more

This highly fast-paced, gripping tale keep me flipping it's pages long into the night. I am a huge fan of scary books, I crave them, wishing there would be more of them set in a YA setting. I went into reading Unbreakable with very high expectations. I mean this is Kami Garcia were talking about, author of the Beautiful creatures series. So make no mistake when I tell you I was not disappointed to say the least. More like blown away by the AWESOMENESS that is Unbreakable.
As the story begins we meet our heroine, Kennedy Waters. Kennedy is super smart. She has always been able to remember everything she sees, a photographic memory. This spine tingling creepy tale had me reading long past my bedtime. I was totally hooked from page 1. There is something so fun, and entertaining about the supernatural. Growing up I hated scary movies and books. I would close my eyes "sometimes peaking" when ever my Dad would watch moves, like the Exorcist or The Shining. Now all grown up, I adore those types of movies, and books. I love being scared, it's such a rush. This book totally did that for me. I was mesmerised by the story. There was never a dull moment. Unbreakable was action packed, and thoroughly creeped me out with each page. The storyline itself, the race to save the world from utter disaster, I feel is what really make this book such a great read. One other aspect of the story I loved was the building romance between Kennedy and the twins. Yes, I know what your thinking...another love triangle. Ugh! While, I myself hate love triangles (of course it depends on the book) between the characters for some reason this one worked. For me it just so happen to fit into the story-line perfectly. I found myself actually rooting for one of the twins over the other.
All in all, Unbreakable truly did live up to my high expectations. I think the only thing that kind of bugged me while reading was the plain disregarded of leaving her friend, Elle in the dark. I feel Kennedy could have made it a point to call her friend, and more so her aunt to let them know she was okay, even if she couldn't truly explain what was happening.
There's no doubt about, Unbreakable was one high addictive epic read! Perfect for Halloween or for those who love a good scare. Author, Kami Garica is a born storytelling, she really knows how to spook her readers. I can't wait to find out what happens next! ...more

I recently got done reading the book and felt I nMy Review: I was contacted by author Dylan White a few months ago to read his new novel, Apparition. I recently got done reading the book and felt I needed some time to really absorb the story and be able to tell you my thoughts perfectly. So here we go... Apparition first and foremost is one of the best ghost stories I have read but not in the scary sense. Most times you think of a Ghost as being bad and haunting someone for revenge or even fun. This story is nothing like that, the ghost is kind and sweet, very protective but wait I am getting ahead of myself here. Let me start from the beginning...
Jade who is the lead female role is the story has just lost her Father to a heart attack and now feels so much pain and sadness in her heart. Jade is someone who likes to be alone and not show her feelings. So once her Mother remarries to a guy she knew is high school. Jade is forced to be uprooted and move to a new town with her Mother and new step-father, Ray. Jade is angry and depressed from all the recent events in her life and feels hopeless. So one night while Jade is getting ready for bed she feel a presents in her bedroom and thinks she see someone as well. Jade hopes it is her Father coming back in spirit form to say goodbye to her. When she sees the figure is not her father but of a young boy around her age she wonders who he really is. Sean is a ghost who died over 70 years ago and still walks the earth. Now his soul purpose is to protect Jade and make her feel happy once again. Soon Jade starts to feel better, begins making new friends and even is crushing on a hot guy at school. Little does she know that Sean is falling for her... but that the least of her worries when Jade finds out that not all ghosts are good and kind. A vengeful apparition is up to no good and will stop at nothing to steal Jade soul.
I absolutely adored the love story between the two main character's. It was heartbreaking and sweet but felt so real and perfect. I felt sorry for Sean many times throughout the book. He felt such a beautiful and innocent love for Jade and even through he knew he could never really be with her like he wanted to. Sean was always there for her and willing to do anything to protect her. I really feel in love with this bittersweet romance. The story had me captivated from page one and had a strong hold on me until the very end. Author, Dylan White is such a wonderful story-teller. He knows how to make the reader fall into Jade's world and feel what she feels right from the start. The only reason I did not give the book a full 5 stars was because I did find a couple mild spelling errors and felt the pace of the book could have been a little faster.
I really did enjoyed Apparition and would definitely want to know what happens next in the story. Apparition is a fun and light read for all ages. The romance was classic and sweet. The paranormal aspect in the book were perfect and so very compelling. I truly hope my readers will give this book a chance and let me tell you you will be glad you did. I know I was! ...more
First to let you know I found this book to be truly breath-taking. I so immensely enjoyed reading this book thaMy Thoughts: (I have this book 5 Stars)
First to let you know I found this book to be truly breath-taking. I so immensely enjoyed reading this book that I was thinking of the story long after I read it. The story-line was brilliant, fun, and ever so much a hunting tale to leaves you wanting more. Author, Tara Hudson wrote such a impeccable story with so much charm and pose in her writing style. I was blown away by how intriguing Hereafter was, and loved the character's. I love when I can fall in love with a character in a book simply by how the author describes there actions, words, and traits. This was one of those books where if you put the book down your always wondering what will happen next. The whole aspect of this book was a fun, refreshing, and outstanding read. Everything about Hereafter was so prefect and I really enjoyed reading it. This is a story of a girl named, Amelia and not of her life but her death. Only after waking up from a horrible drowning she knows she is no longer alive but dead and keeps having to relive her death only to wake up in the graveyard were her body is now buried. Two things Amelia now knows are true, is one she does not know why she died, and two Joshua is able to see her. After seeing him by the river as he drove his car into it by accident and watching his almost drown she comes to find out that he is able to see her but why? Who said you can't have a friend in the afterlife?! Amelia and Joshua become more than friends as they begin to uncover the reason for Amelia's death, but someone else who is also not of the living begins to turn her away from what she is likely to find. Eli, a spirit has other plans for Amelia, more of the frighting nature. Amelia now has to face the truth about her dead and with who and where she should spend her afterlife with... good or evil? One thing she does know is Joshua loves her dead or alive, but will that be enough to stay with him even know he is among the living. Later Amelia struggles with Eli and his plan to drag her to the ghost world for a very hunting and horrifying new life. The ending of Hereafter will leave longing for more. I want to thank the author Tara for writing such a charming and outstanding book. Your book makes me happy to be reading. Hereafter would be one of my favorite books of 2011 and I would definitely recommend this book to a reader who wants to dive deeper into the paranormal YA genre. ...more
