P.40 “I told him if I wanted to hear psychobabble, I could visit a shrink cheap on Medibank. I’m not casual about sex, far from it.. I’m actually very picky. I prefer the fit few to the mediocre masses. But I’m not big on wringing out other people’s soggy hankies, and If I wanted a partner, I’d Join a law firm. If I do choose to be with someone, I want it to stay light and fun. It gives me no pleasure, none at all, to hurt people’s feelings, especially not tragic cases like Ozren, who is clearly a spectacular human being, brave and intelligent and all the rest of it. Even handsome, if you can cope with the unkempt thing. “ ~ Hanna
“As for my dysfunctional co-called family, it’s true that I’ve inherited a core belief, to wit: don’t rely on some other sod for your emotional sustenance. Find something absorbing to do – something so absorbing that you don’t have time to dwell on the woe-is-me stuff.” ~ Hanna
p.43 “ “The joke was that anyone in Vienna who wasn’t carrying a musical iinstrument was either a pianist, a harpist or a foreign spy.”
P.70 “Your life is not yours,” he said. “Every extra day you are given belongs to those of your families who have died. We will see our country free, or we, too, will die. There is no other future for us”. ~ Branko
“Afterwards, Lola lay awake on her hard pallet feeling lost and alone, longing for the gentle warmth of Dora’s rounded little back. She did not want to accept the truth of what Branko had said, that her family was dead. Yet the hollow place inside of her left little room for hope. The escape from the city and the flight through the countryside had filled her mind. But now, as she listened to the snores of strangers, she felt a dull ache. From then on, everything she did would be like moving through a fog.”

p.101 “…..Tell me, Hanna, have you ever read Schnitzler? No? You must? You cannot undertand anything about the Viennese, even today without Arthur Schnitzler.” ~ Werner

p.117. “What was it that Dante wrote about the pope who abdicated his throne to become a contemplative and yet is condemned to one of the lowest circles of hell? Something about being punished for having turned his back on a great opportunity to do good in the world……”
p.186 “He sank down upon a bench, exhausted and heartsick. God might forgive sins against his laws, but Aryeh knew – he had preached it often enough – that forgiveness also must be sought from, and atonement made to, those who had been damaged by sinful acts.”
p.188 “ Kaddish had always been one of Aryeh’s favourite prayers – the prayer for the dead that did not mention death, or grief, or loss, but only life and glory and peace. The prayer had turned its face away from burial plots and mouldering remains and set it’s eyes on the firmament. “
p.196 of Judah ~ “All around him, pedestrians turned to stare at the mad Jew. He felt their eyes, their hatred. He began to run. The blood eddied, trapped and sluggish, in the fissured chambers of his breaking heart. As his feet landed on the hard stone, fists seemed to strike his chest, the blows of a giant.’
p.197 ‘ The voices. You must do this, always.” The blowing of the sand of that desolate town. “The voices”. And the other one, the language he must not speak. “Dayenu”! He cried the word aloud – “Enough.”
p.201 “I’d fallen into a funk. It was a familiar feeling for me: an occupational hazard. It was as if I was up against some genie who lived within the pages of old books. Sometimes, if you were lucky, you got to release him for an instant or two, and he would reward you with a misty glimpse into the past. Other times, pouf-he’d blow it all away before you could make sense of it, and stand there, arms crossed; Thus far, and no farther. “

“Never once did her father open the door for Reuben to the glory that swirled in the dark ink. Her own mind was incandescent with it. Any tiny letter was a poem, a prayer, a gateway to the splendour of God. And every letter it’s own road, its own special mystery.”
P.260 note; in 1483 ~ the queen’s confessor Tomas de Torquemada had been named Grand Inquisitor of the Holy Inquisition Against Depraved Heresy.”
