The story is about a man named Tom Hunter who dreams in two worlds. In one he has just returned from Bangkok to live with his sister in modern Denver. In the other, it is a post apocalyptic society where a mutated virus has destoyed most of the population in the past. Each time he sleeps in one reality, he wakes and lives in the other. Not sure which is real or whether they both are. But events in the current world/dreams it is prior to the virus' release and he and his sister desperately try to prevent the holocaust that only his dreams predict. In the future reality, events are such that good and evil seems to take on literal forms.
The story is often very confusing. And I often got angry with Tom Hunter for getting caught up in the happiness he experiences in the future society where he basically seems to forget the importance in the past one. Distracted by beauty and seeming peace.
Of course the big question is going to be why is this happening to him. What is real? Who or what is controlling his dreams and why? So though this book was frustratng and sometimes tedious, I will eb reading the next to see where the story goes...LOL(less)

I will say it is well written and the style made it move and read quickly.
But what I really didn't like is there was no hope in this book. Not really. They would have positive moments as they found shelter or food. But so much fear and darkness in the story. From the cannibals and the constant dangers. The bitter cold, starvation and misery. I kept asking myself. Why bother? I am not really that pessimistic but this story had nothing to look forward to. No sanctuary to reach. No real hope of a happy ever after life.
In fact, instead of seeing the father's struggles to keep the son fed and safe was downright depressing. And the boy kept asking am I gonna die? Or are you coming back? etc.. Misery. No hope.
I kinda understood the mother's actions more than his.
And even the ending. Terribly sad but then even with a little tiny positive moment, it still left no promises but more misery and suffering. Is that a real life?
So yes, written really well but a story that I did not enjoy.(less)

Ruth has a vaccine and is trying to spread it to as many people as possible. Only politics and war are complicating things.
I had a slow time reading this book. I just never got really involved in the story though I am not exactly sure why. Partly because I didnt like Ruth I think. But I will say I REALLY disliked her "solution" to the war and I was kinda glad the book was over(less)

Protected by the sisterhood and the guardians, they fear for the day they break through. When the day finally comes, Mary and a few others escape and try to survive, all the while she dreams of finding the ocean - a place described to her by her mother from the old legends.
I really enjoyed this story. Mary was a strong and interesting character. Conflicted by many warring emotions. (less)

Dale is disatisfied with his life toiling in the soil and one day a stranger shows up to take him to Antarctica, only they don't make it and he is manipulated and hunted by two Dukes not understanding why. Of course, the why is that he threatens the status quo. In the end, he finds that he can change the entire world.

Ryan develops the world after the "Return" more and the different perspective of how the different survivors coped. I liked the characters in this one more than the first book. And it was nice to have Mary acknowledge her selfishness. (less)

From the children parents "receive" to the names they are given, to the jobs they will hold. Til when they are "realeased". Only Jonas is special. He is to be the new "Receiver" of memories. He will hold all the pain of the past for the community. The Giver is the current receiveer who passes all these memories to him. Only this time, they decide it is time for the community to learn pain and to change. So Jonas will seek a new future for himself.
This was a fantastic book. Jonas' experiences and thoughts are believeable and I was sucked into the story enjoying it all. And not to mention - thinking about it a lot. Look forward to the next in the series. (less)

Society has collapsed and a war is ongoing. Danny McCoyne is one of the Haters who is seeking to find his daughter who is also a Hater. Only things are not as simple as they seem.
I enjoyed the book, the world created was horrific and sad.(less)

The different stories from different perspectives made it seem even more comprehensive feeling than a straight narrative. And, this being an audio book, the various narrators enhanced the experience. Look forward to the movie!(less)

And she soon finds out that much of what she has been told is lies and mysterious people (good? bad? Hard to tell?) appear who change her life forever.
Great puzzles and action as Chela tries to find the truth and overcome betrayals and secrets.(less)

But now the effects of the pulse are finally wearing off and two groups (The Clansmen - warriors and The Catholic Church) are looking for pieces of a map which will lead the way to find The mysterious Oracle which is prophesied to begin the new Golden Age. However, if this power ends up in the wrong hands like the villianous Kraken, it could make the Dark Age seem wonderful in comparison.
This is the second book in the series and I don't feel like I lost anything by jumping right in. I think it stands well alone. The characters, Especially Ferrell, Brother Sebastian, Alex and David-Michael were very likeable and I was rooting for them.
The Kraken was truly an evil master warlord and therefore quite the dangerous advesary for our seekers.THe battles were intense and the Oracle fascinating.

There are three decending layers - each a separate realm but ruled by the Sun Dwellers. What starts as a glace between two people -- Tristan (son of the Ruler of the Sun Realm who is a despot) and Adele (prisoner in the Moon Realm after her parents were branded treasonus), turns into much much more.
Full of battles and strong characters with bigger social implications, the story is very strong told alternately from tristan and Adele's points-of-view. Action packed and characters you care about.(less)
