I am sure anyone can start ANYWHERE in the series and get sucked into the eerie poetic world of Charles "Bird" Parker, the haunted private investigator, and his macho-but-gay assassin/mercenary cohorts Louis and Angel. The next book is THE REAPERS and focuses mostly on Louis and Angel tho Parker does appear eventually in a switch of roles supporting their play instead of their usual support of his.
Without being florid, Connolly's prose is beautiful while it creates a multi-dimensional environment for the reader to be a part of the floating worlds of this and other lives from the past, present and future, all intersecting through the minds and hearts of the men he populates the novel with. Even the smallest cameo appearance is drawn with an economy of words that still leaves no question what "makes them tick".
I suppose these books are in the genre of "mysteries"...but it is more appropriate to capitalize the word and include the further definition of psyschic wonders...Mysteries are integral to the lives of the characters and therefore also to us.Good and evil are seen as grays that alternate ethical sides without any compromise of Good Intent, for no matter what they do or have done, these ARE good men doing the jobs that need to be done for the world to keep going.
