I was not really sure what I expected, sports books are not really my thing. I was super surprised that I loved the book as much as I did. This one a one sitting read for me and it has been a long time since I have had one of those.
So what was it about this book at captured my attention, it was a little bit of everything. First, just the premises of the book and the characters. Jordan is the captain of her high school’s football team and the quarterback. Jordan had never had an interest in any of the boys, has never had a first kiss, and has not really thought about it too much, she doesn’t want to lose the respect of her team mates. Well, all of that is about to change when a new boy in town, Ty, is placed on the football team. From the first moment she see him, Jordan is distracted and attracted to him. What Jordan falls to see is that her best friend and teammate has always had feelings for her and her world is about to be turned upside down. As she suddenly has to learn to deal with her feelings and how to cope with the two boys in her life at odds with each other over her.
This book is about so much more than just this. Jordan has come from a football family. Her older brother plays college ball and her father plays in the NFL. Yet her father never shows up for a game and never asks how things are going, he wants her to give up on her dream. Jordan’s dream has always been to play for the University of Alabama and it seems like this might become a reality but she quickly realizes that she may only be a poster girl for them and never play the game she loves.
I understand that Jordan’s father just wants her to be safe and what parent would not worry about their child, male or female, getting hurt playing a sport but there were times during the book that I just wanted to yell at him. His concern came across as disinterest. It isn’t until Jordan overhears a conversation her parents are having that demonstrates his fears that I started to understand him more. And really at that point, he started playing a more active role in the book and Jordan’s life.
There are a lot of emotional ups and down in this book and really many different points of view to be taken into account. It was reassuring to watch everyone in the story grow up as the book progressed. There was one part of the book that really just irritated me and this is probably only because I am from the state of Michigan, so I have a really good beat on Michigan sports. Towards the end of the book, Jordan’s father decides that he is going to take Jordan and her best friend to Michigan. For the best friend to visit, University of Michigan and Jordan to visit Michigan State, where he knows the coach and thinks there is a chance that Jordan would actually be able to play. While at Michigan State, they are preparing for the biggest game of the year, and Jordan is going to get the chance to attend the game. The problem is the book refers to this game as against Notre Dame, this is so not right. The biggest game and rivalry is always University of Michigan. So this just bothered me, most people would not even catch it but because these are my home teams I did.
Regardless, I really like the book and the direction it took. This was not all about sport and that made it really enjoyable. I would recommend this book. (less)

The...more So Damn Lucky starts on a downer Teddie is overseas chasing his dreams and has left Lucky along and she is beginning to doubt their relationship. There have been so many changes in Lucky’s life since the first book in this series and for the first time it appears that things are looking pretty down for her. There are still sexual tension between Lucky and two men who work in the hotel, Dane and the chef. Lucky is also unsure how long she will be able to keep the big secret about being the Big Boss’ daughter. There is a lot going on and then things become even stranger when a magician dies during a stunt and then just disappears. As always Lucky feels that she has to figure out what is going on.
This was a whirlwind of a story for me because there is just so much going on. That being said, I found there to be a very nice balance between the action and adventure parts of the story and the relationships, romantic and not. The one character issue I have with Lucky is that she says one thing and acts in a completely different manner when it comes to the romantic side of her life. With all that she has going on between her crazy job, parents who have reconnected, and the mystery she is trying to solve, I just don’t know how she has time at act upon all of the different men she is attracted too. And really how she can make decisions with one important person not even being there. As a whole, I think that I happy with the outcome of this story and where I think it might be going next. There are some major changes on the forefront and I think that they are going to be very exciting.
I really enjoy Deborah Coonts fun writing style and how she brings each and every character to life in such interesting manners. Normally, I think that I would be irritated with a story line of UFOs and magicians but Ms. Coonts found a way for even me to enjoy it. Perhaps it was the distraction of everything else going on. Overall, I am looking forward to book #4, I really hope there will be one.(less)

I have wanted to reread this series but with each book exceeding 800 pages there just was not a way that I could reread the series and read anything new at the same time. Thus came the idea of listening to the book since I have over a hour commute each day I can listen to about a CD a day. Keep in mind that this still meant that it took me almost a month to listen to whole book. But I really enjoyed it maybe even more so than reading it. I think the reason behind this is that I just got to enjoy the language and movement of the story without stressing if I was catching everything or struggling through some of the Gaelic.
I will say, as is true with the book, either you will love this story and reading of it, or it will not be for you. Diana Gabaldon is amazing at writing a story that crosses over so many different genre types. There is time travel, romance, war, witches, history, and so much more. By far this is one of my favorite series of all time. My only frustration is the amount of time between book requires me to reread when a new one is coming out and that is quite a time commitment, but always worth it.
One of the best parts about the audio portion is that the readers is authentic and does a great job with the emotion and the Gaelic, I loved hearing how the words should be pronounced, in most cases not even close to how I would have thought. It is a beautiful language.
Overall, I would recommend this audio book but be aware of the commitment it will take to get through the entire story.(less)
