The Journal of Patrick Seamus Flaherty Reviewed by Moirae the fates book reviews
The brother of an anti-war demonstrator, a young marine is fighting a war no one understands while his sister is fighting on the home front to end the war in Vietnam and bring her brother home. An agonizing dilemma plagues these brother-sister diarists. He is a Marine stationed in Vietnam. She is at home in America, far away from her brother's war zone, fighting for peace. As the marine writes in his journal about his experiences as a soldier, fighting an enemy he can't see, his sister seeks peace. (Synopsis provided by goodreads)
I was a fan of the DA series when I was young. I got a few more recently and I bought Where have all the flowers gone? Which is the companion novel to this one. I got a copy of this one when I realized it was the companion and I read this one first.
I really liked how the author brought Patrick, Bebop, Hollywood and Rotgut to life. The reader gets a small idea as to what it must have been like for the men who were at Khe Sanh in 1968. We get to know and love Patrick and his friends. We see how war rips some of this friends away and how Patrick deals with it.
We also get to see how Patrick worries about his sister Molly who is back home in Boston. There were parts of this book that made me sad, and as crazy as it sounds I even laughed at one part. It shows the guys having fun. It was an excellent scene, for a short time, I forgot that the boys were in war zone, I was laughing right along with them. Then when the fun was over, I was thrown back and remembered, Oh yeah, the guys are fighting war.
While the book says it's for ages 9 and up, if you are a parent, it might be a good idea to read it first. Since it is a war book there are some bits that not all children would be able to handle. I do recommend this book to everyone. Even if you don't normally read middle grade.

School Spirits by Rachel Hawkins Reviewed by Moirae the fates book reviews

Can Izzy trust her new friends to help find the secret behind the hauntings before more people get hurt?
Rachel Hawkins' delightful spin-off brings the same wit and charm as the New York Times best-selling Hex Hall series. Get ready for more magic, mystery and romance! (Synopsis provided by goodreads)
A few years ago, I saw a picture of a book shelf and saw a book called Hex Hall in the picture. It sounded interesting, so I googled the book wanted to read it and went to the library. I was hooked after a few pages, I waited for books 2 &3 to be released. When the series was over, it was sad, no more Sophie. Then Rachel Hawkins announced a spin off series with Sophie's cousin Izzy. I was excited and promptly pre-ordered a copy. This is book one.
I loved the spin off idea, normally spin offs don't work as well as they can, but this one was top drawer. Hawkins writes with the same humor in this series as she did with Hex Hall. Is Izzy as funny and sarcastic as Sophie? No. But she's close. Izzy, really is her own person, I'm sure some people will say they are the same, they have similar qualities yes, but they are two very different characters.
I've been in a bit of a reading funk lately, so I was elated to get my hands on this book a few days early. Hawkins was just the thing to pull me out of a literary funk. I laughed in this book so many times and like usual, Hawkins had a few tricks up her sleeve. Hawkins has become a writer who's books I will read without even knowing what they are about, there are only a few other authors on that list.
I really liked Izzy when we first met her in SpellBound though, you do not need to read the Hex Hall series first, I would encourage you to read them at some point. Along with Izzy, we meet up with Torin again and he's his usual jerky self which is awesome. I think the new character I loved in this one the most was Dex. Girls, Dex is hot and he's super fun as well. He has a big heart and I can't wait to learn more about him.
There are a few questions I have after reading this book 3 of them for me are huge I have to know the answers! I am looking forward to the next book and hope it's not too far off. If you are looking for something fun, different and humorous, then get yourself a copy.(less)

If I should die by Amy Plum Reviewed by Moirae the fates book reviews.
I will not lose another person I love. I will not let history repeat itself.
Vincent waited lifetimes to find me, but in an instant our future together was shattered. He was betrayed by someone we both called a friend, and I lost him. Now our enemy is determined to rule over France’s immortals, and willing to wage a war to get what they want.
It shouldn’t be possible, none of it should be, but this is my reality. I know Vincent is somewhere out there, I know he’s not completely gone, and I will do anything to save him.
After what we’ve already fought to achieve, a life without Vincent is unimaginable. He once swore to avoid dying—to go against his nature and forsake sacrificing himself for others—so that we could be together. How can I not risk everything to bring my love back to me? Wow. Just wow! That was such a great book! The series as a whole is my favorite! Going into this one, I had a few theories and I was right. Which is awesome, I am so glad my theories were right I was hoping they would be.
This one picks literally right where the last book left off. Pretty much it's the same scene! Which is fantastic! Like all of Amy Plum's books If I should die is packed with action. We get too see more sword fights and more bloody characters.
We also get to meet new characters and get to see another city which was a neat twist. I really loved the additional lore that we learned in this one and we saw a different side to Papy which was really sweet.
I really enjoyed how Georgia's character developed over the course of the three books, she was her usual funny self in this one as well as part bad-ass. Not as much as Kate but still bad-ass!
If I had to pick my favorite part of this book, I don't think I could do it. It was that amazing! My only complaint is that ended. I had to force myself to do normal things like eat, sleep and go to work. I wanted to read it all in one sitting. I am glad I didn't though I was able to enjoy it that much longer.
Plum is by far one of my favorite authors right up there with Stephen King I will read anything she writes before I know what it's about. She is defendantly an author to be watching if you aren't already. If you haven't read Die for me, or Until I die you have to! Get to a book store now and read them, you'll be all caught up when If I should die is released in May.
This was such a brilliant ride but sadly it must come to an end. I am glad though all my favorites got what they deserved and the characters all got a great wrap up to their story. I think that most all readers will be pleased by this book and by the ending that Kate and company got.

While reading this book, I went through a deep personal loss. Reading this I really understood some of the losses that the characters were going through. Through talking about this book before I finished it with a fellow blogger, I learned about the events of the last chapter. After finding out what was going to happen and my personal loss, I set the book down for a few weeks refusing to open it, knowing what was in store for the characters I have come to love. Especially Tom. Holy cow I LOVE Tom!
Once I picked the book back up, I was glad I did, even though I knew what was going to happen, I wasn't looking forward to it, but I so wanted to know the how and why of the ending. So, I read the last chapter, I cried along with Nix and the others. It made me think of my own loss and how books epically ones like this really touch people.
It's not often that books come into a person's life that they really identify with. This is one of those books/ series. Yes, it deals with zombies, but that is such a small part of the story. The story deals with so much more and has so much more depth to it. Yes, it's great fun to read and yes the characters are amazing.
Benny grows so much in this book and he and Nix grow together in many ways. Tom is still as bad ass as ever in this one. I really loved J-Dog and Dr. Skillz! They were hilarious! I do hope we get to see more of them in the next book. Sally was pretty neat too, but I liked J-Dog more. Tom is still my favorite by far, gotta love Tom!
The dialoug of this book was presented very well, the Lost Girl, opens up a bit more, but she never lost that wall that she has. She still protects herself, but not in a way that makes you dislike her character, which is really hard to do. Maberry is a fantastic author!
If you haven't read it yet, please pick up this story and read it, you will not regret it. I can't wait to open up book three to see if the why of the ending of this book is answered. I love this series!(less)

Rot & Ruin by Jonathan Maberry Reviewed by Moirae the fates book reviews.
In the zombie-infested, post-apocalyptic America where Benny Imura lives, every teenager must find a job by the time they turn fifteen or get their rations cut in half. Benny doesn't want to apprentice as a zombie hunter with his boring older brother Tom, but he has no choice. He expects a tedious job whacking zoms for cash, but what he gets is a vocation that will teach him what it means to be human. (Synopsis provided by goodreads)
I've never really liked the idea of "traditional" zombie books. I started to watch the t.v. show The walking dead and realized something. Zombies are AWESOME! I went over to my vast TBR pile and picked up this book, I've had it for nearly two years just sitting waiting to be picked up and read. I was about twenty pages in when I was asking myself, "Why, oh why did I wait so long to read this?" I was fifty pages in when I rushed out to buy book two. That hasn't happened since I was in 6th grade and started reading Harry Potter!
I loved this book! Maberry is an amazing author! He made me want a fake katana, after all if it's good enough for Tom (my favorite character in the book!) why shouldn't I want one? This book has characters from different cultures, Benny is Japanese and Irish, while Nix (Love her!) is Irish. Tom is Benny's half brother and he is Japanese.
For me, this was the type of book where you know you need to sleep but it's so good and you just have to know what happens next, that you don't want to stop reading!
Maberry will have you laughing on one page then the next page he has you freaking out over the safety of the characters. The first line of the book has an amazing hook as well: "Benny Imura couldn't hold a job so he took to killing." Um, how great is that? It makes the reader go wait, what? And you just have to know more don't you?
If you are a zombie lover or even if you're a skeptic, you should pick this one up and give it a try, I've already ordered the first book in another series by Maberry as well. I loved this book as much as I loved Die for Me by Amy Plum, and if you follow my reviews, you know much I love her books!

Life after death by Damien Echols Reviewed by Moirae the fates book reviews
In 1993, teenagers Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley, Jr.—who have come to be known as the West Memphis Three—were arrested for the murders of three eight-year-old boys in Arkansas. The ensuing trial was marked by tampered evidence, false testimony, and public hysteria. Baldwin and Misskelley were sentenced to life in prison; while eighteen-year-old Echols, deemed the “ringleader,” was sentenced to death. Over the next two decades, the WM3 became known worldwide as a symbol of wrongful conviction and imprisonment, with thousands of supporters and many notable celebrities who called for a new trial. In a shocking turn of events, all three men were released in August 2011. Now Echols shares his story in full—from abuse by prison guards and wardens, to portraits of fellow inmates and deplorable living conditions, to the incredible reserves of patience, spirituality, and perseverance that kept him alive and sane while incarcerated for nearly two decades.
In these pages, Echols reveals himself a brilliant writer, infusing his narrative with tragedy and irony in equal measure: he describes the terrors he experienced every day and his outrage toward the American justice system, and offers a firsthand account of living on Death Row in heartbreaking, agonizing detail. Life After Death is destined to be a riveting, explosive classic of prison literature.(Synopsis taken from goodreads)
Where to start? First off memoirs are very difficult to review as you are reviewing a persons life in a way and it can feel as if you are passing judgment on someone else life and experiences. Over all, I did enjoy reading this, and that in of it's self sounds morbid. It should be stated that I have always been a supporter of Damien, Jason and Jessie ever since I first found out about the case. If you have read Echols' first book Almost Home then you will be very familiar with some of the stories in this first part of this book. Which isn't a big deal and is to be expected since the only outside life he had was up until the age of eighteen.
There was a lot in this book that was hard to read, some of the stories he shares from his time on Death Row are too horrible to imagine. I read a lot of fiction and have never come across anything so sickening and I read a lot of horror. It just goes to show how real life can be worse then fiction.
I do wish that there was more of an explanation on the Alford plea, but Echols explains how much of a shock it was, so it's understandable why there wasn't a lot of explanation on it. The one thing that did bother me a little was how there were a few times when he would repeat a story or a small part of it in different chapters, but at the same time, it flowed so I guess that was why it was in there twice or he needed to drive a point home.
I did learn a lot more in this one then in his first book though, the documentaries and other books on the case do leave a lot of information about how the WMPD treated Echols long before the case and how he was always harassed by them.
The best parts of the book are the parts where he talks about his wife Lorri. Just reading it you can tell just how much he loves her and how deep that love is. It truly is the only beautiful thing in a very sad and depressing book. If you are thinking about reading this book or if you are a supporter of Damien, Jason and Jessie or even if you're just curious about Death Row in Arkansas then I would highly recommend this book. Honor receives her brother’s last letter from Iraq three days after learning that he died, and opens it the day his fellow Marines lay the flag over his casket. Its contents are a complete shock: concert tickets to see Kyra Kelly, her favorite pop star and Finn’s celebrity crush. In his letter, he jokingly charged Honor with the task of telling Kyra Kelly that he was in love with her.
Grief-stricken and determined to grant Finn’s last request, she rushes to leave immediately. But she only gets as far as the driveway before running into Rusty, Finn’s best friend since third grade and his polar opposite. She hasn’t seen him in ages, thanks to a falling out between the two guys, but Rusty is much the same as Honor remembers him: arrogant, stubborn . . . and ruggedly good-looking. Neither one is what the other would ever look for in a road trip partner, but the two of them set off together, on a voyage that makes sense only because it doesn’t. Along the way, they find small and sometimes surprising ways to ease their shared loss and honor Finn--but when shocking truths are revealed at the end of the road, will either of them be able to cope with the consequences? (Synopsis provided by goodreads)
I really liked this one. It has been in my TBR pile since it was released. This was another one where I wondered why it took me so long to read it! I loved Honor's character. I found myself crying and laughing right along with her.
Throughout the book, we get to see clips of Honor's brother Finn. I really wish that we could have seen more of Finn and learned a bit more about him. I did have an idea about what would happen at the end of the book, just due to the synopsis and in a way I was right, but I missed some of the details.
Parts of this book, like most contemporaries, were predictable, but it was still good regardless. I have found that I really like most contemporary books. Especially ones dealing with war. It's not a topic that gets written about much, which is sad, as I think it would be good if we had more books that deal with this topic.
Rusty, was the character who Honor loves to hate. I could see why he got on her nerves, as I would have the same reaction for the most part that Honor did. But, by the end of the book I really started to like him.
I loved it when he would tell Honor small things about Finn that she never knew. I laughed so hard when he told her about how Finn named the car! That was funny, and I would have said the same thing that Honor said!
The last chapter was bittersweet. I felt for Honor but at the same time, I was so happy for her. Even though this is a stand alone, I would like to know what happened to Honor after the last page, and what happened to Rusty? Or even a prequel, where we get to meet Finn, or Finn's time in Iraq.
If you haven't yet, get to the bookstore and by yourself a copy of this one!

I loved the first installment of Cass' The Selection series. I was eagerly waiting to read book two, and let me just say WOW! This one was even better then the first. It picks up after the first one leaves off with only the six remaining girls the Elite. America, Natalie, Elise, Marlee, Kriss and Celeste are the lucky six chosen by Maxon to stay in the palace. The girls face new challenges and more eliminations in this book. We get to see Maxon and America grow as characters in this book while learning some new things about some of the other girls. I really like the friendship between America and Marlee. We get to see a new side to both Maxon and Aspen which was terrific! There were a few plot twists in this one, that I anticipated happening and some new ones that I never would have guessed. Cass is a talented writer and tells such a fabulous tale. I had to force myself to stop reading the book to make it last longer. It's one of those books where you sit down to read a chapter and 30 chapters later you realize you need to be doing other things, but the story is too good to put down! The descriptions of the rooms and the parties were just amazing, Cass has a talent for making the reader feel like you are right there with her characters in the same room and can see, taste and smell the surroundings! I have a few thoughts on what may happen in book three and I am thoroughly excited to see what happens in the last book! If you have yet to pick up this series I highly encourage you to! After his older brother dies in Iraq, Matt makes a discovery that rocks his beliefs about strength, bravery, and honor in this page-turning debut.
Ever since his brother, T.J., was killed in Iraq, Matt feels like he’s been sleepwalking through life — failing classes, getting into fights, and avoiding his dad’s lectures about following in his brother’s footsteps. T.J.’s gone, but Matt can’t shake the feeling that if only he could get his hands on his brother’s stuff from Iraq, he’d be able to make sense of his death. But as Matt searches for answers about T.J.’s death, he faces a shocking revelation about T.J.’s life that suggests he may not have known T.J. as well as he thought. What he learns challenges him to stand up to his father, honor his brother’s memory, and take charge of his own life. With compassion, humor, and a compelling narrative voice, E. M. Kokie explores grief, social mores, and self-discovery in a provocative first novel. (Synopsis provided by goodreads)
You know that rare feeling you get with a book? The one where you read the first chapter and already feel like you've known the main character your whole life? Or the feeling you get from a book where you have to stop yourself from reading more just to make it last longer and to sleep?
Personal Effects gives the reader both. Just from the synopsis I guessed what the "shocking revelation" about T.J. was. Even having guessed it, it didn't take anything away from the experience of reading this book. I loved Matt. He was such a strong character and had such an awesome voice I was sucked in after the first page.
When we learn of T.J.'s death, my heart broke for Matt. He went through so much after he finds out about the death. All of this makes the reader's heart break even more. Matt has a very close friend Shauna who I really liked. I wish she had had more face time in the book, but at the same time I think that what time she had was just right.
This is such a powerful book, I don't think there are enough book on this subject in the Iraq War. Kokie did such an amazing job on showing us what Matt was going through.
Having a male narrator was a refreshing change in YA. I loved this book. This is a book I will buying a finished copy of when it releases. If you want a new book, with a strong male voice I would highly recommend this book.

I really liked book 2. I liked getting to meet new characters and seeing the new arena. I absolutely loved Finnick, I found him to be hilarious and such a treat to the book. Sadly, I had a large part of this book spoiled for me so I knew what was going to happen before it did, so I can't say what I would have thought or if it would have been a surprise.

In Fallen by Lauren Kate we meet Luce Price and Daniel Grigori a pair of star-cross lovers…with a twist. Daniel is a fallen angel. Luce meets him when she is sent to a reform school for “problem” teens. She was sent there due to a fire at her old school, when Luce was in the room and the other student that was with her didn’t make it out of the fire. When she sees him, she feels an immediate pull to him; however, she can’t understand why he is so rude to her. Luce makes fast friends with Penn, her and Penn talk about Daniel like all girls do with their friends. Luce and Daniel are first able to interact a bit more when both of them have to do detention in the school cemetery. The relationship that blooms between Luce and Daniel felt very organic and true. Kate never made it feel forced or like it was fake. The character development was amazing in this story. I did see the book marketed as another Twilight, calling this book Twilight is an insult to Fallen. It was nothing like anything I have ever read before and saying it is like any other book, is calling it unoriginal. It is a very original book. Daniel truly loves Luce and Luce truly loves Daniel. The pair make a wonderful couple. The whole book is action-packed and Kate gives the reader a little snippet of information throughout the book and the reader can put it together like a jigsaw puzzle. The ending and the chapters just before the ending where jam packed with information and action. The twists and turns that Kate gives to the story is amazing and I never saw a few of them coming. This is going to be a four book series, the second of which Torment will be available on 28- September-2010 I would recommend this book to readers of all types. Kate is an author to watch!
What parents need to know: The book has some language, but not much, there is no sexual content so to speak in the book besides kissing, if one can call that sexual content.
Cover art: The cover art is beautiful and the reason I first picked up the book, it reminded me of Amy Lee.
Over all rating: My overall rating for Fallen is a ***** 5 out of 5 stars

The Selection by Kiera Cass Reviewed by Moirae the fates book reviews.
For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in the palace and compete for the heart of the gorgeous Prince Maxon.
But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.
Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself- and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined. (Synopsis provided by goodreads)
Wow! I absolutely loved this book! It's such a fun and light hearted read. I must say though that the only similarity it has to The Hunger Games is the lottery aspect. Aside from that, the two are completely different beasts.
I really liked America's character, she was out spoken and very assertive. I was glad to see another novel with such a strong female lead. Maxon (the Prince) was also a wonderful new-comer to the book world. I really liked his cheeky side and how candidly he spoke with America.
Aspen on the other hand, I have a love hate thing going on with him, that's all I'm going to say to avoid spoilers. I really like the premise of this book and the writing style was fun.
I had a feeling how the book would end when I was reading it, but the cliff hanger ending still had me saying "That's it? What happens next?"
If you like the show "The Bachelor" and are looking for a fun, easy, light read. Then pick this one up and give it a try!

“Darshun Luthais—Nasharin warrior and chosen Guardian of earth, continues his journey across the arctic land of Syngothra, seeking to destroy Abaddon’s Unholy Altar of Power, and bring the Second Great War to an end. But when a new and deadly sorcerer working for Abaddon discovers his plan, he sets up a trap for Darshun and his five companions, a colossal army of darkness lying in wait among the frozen elements, ready to unleash its fury once the intruders are in sight. Now it is up to King Loreus—ruler of Loreladia to unify the scattered races of Light, and charge into Syngothra before the trap is sprung. For Loreus wields the Golden Sword of Purity, a weapon forged long ago by the Five Holy Races, before darkness had separated them. With little time to spare, the Loreladian King must stop the Elves from another civil war, gain their trust and then encounter the Centaurs of Cestmir, a pious Matriarchy and self-righteous race, where if they do not remember the Sword, they may prove to be more of an enemy than Abaddon." The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight. By Jennifer E. Smith Reviewed by Moirae the fates book reviews.
Who would have guessed that four minutes could change everything?
Today should be one of the worst days of seventeen-year-old Hadley Sullivan's life. She's stuck at JFK, late to her father's second wedding, which is taking place in London and involves a soon to be step-mother that Hadley's never even met. Then she meets the perfect boy in the airport's cramped waiting area. His name is Oliver, he's British, and he's in seat 18C. Hadley's in 18A.
Twists of fate and quirks of timing play out in this thoughtful novel about family connections, second chances and first loves. Set over a 24-hour-period, Hadley and Oliver's story will make you believe that true love finds you when you're least expecting it. (Synopsis provided by goodreads)
If I had to describe this book in one word it would be adorable. That is just what this book was adorable. I sat down on the steps with this book and a cup of coffee while the child I was baby sitting was taking a nap. I almost had the book finished before the child woke up and I couldn't help but think how much I wished the kid would have napped just a little longer so I could finish the book.
Only 256 pages, but it works, Smith got to the point and she didn't use a lot of 'filler' in the book. Hadley and Oliver are a wonderful contemporary couple. I really enjoyed how well they worked together and how fluid the book was not to mention the dialogue. Everything just flowed naturally and unfolded beautifully before the reader.
What I really liked was how much Hadley grew in such a short book, we see her anger over her Father's second marriage and we see how she deals with it, we also get to see how someone like Hadley is jaded so to speak and gets over that feeling.
I loved this book and I hope there will be a sequel so we can find out what happens after this book. I would recommend this book to someone who likes or even is thinking of picking up a YA contemporary novel. It's a quick read one could read it in a day or a few hours depending on how fast you read. Super fun and the perfect rainy day read.(less)

The Catastrophic History of You and Me by Jess Rothenberg Reviewed by Moirae the fates book reviews
Dying of a broken heart is just the beginning.... Welcome to forever.
BRIE'S LIFE ENDS AT SIXTEEN: Her boyfriend tells her he doesn't love her, and the news breaks her heart—literally.
But now that she's D&G (dead and gone), Brie is about to discover that love is way more complicated than she ever imagined. Back in Half Moon Bay, her family has begun to unravel. Her best friend has been keeping a secret about Jacob, the boy she loved and lost—and the truth behind his shattering betrayal. And then there's Patrick, Brie's mysterious new guide and resident Lost Soul . . . who just might hold the key to her forever after.
With Patrick's help, Brie will have to pass through the five stages of grief before she's ready to move on. But how do you begin again, when your heart is still in pieces? (Synopsis provided by goodreads)
I really liked this book. It was one of those books that made me cry several times while I was reading it. Getting to walk with Bree as she made her way through her grief was really interesting, there were times when I laughed there were times when I cried. This was an amazing book! I loved it. It had a twist that I figured out fairly early on but that didn't diminish what I felt about the book.
It's a wonderful story and even if you are someone who never has had their heart broken, you can still feel empathy for the characters. The edition of Hamloaf (Bree's dog) was fantastic! I highly recommend this book.(less)

When the Mayflower set sail in 1620, it carried on board the men and women who would shape America: Miles Standish; John Alden; Constance Hopkins. But some among the Pilgrims were not pure of heart; they were not escaping religious persecution. Indeed, they were not even human. They were vampires. The vampires assimilated quickly into the New World. Rising to levels of enormous power, wealth, and influence, they were the celebrated blue bloods of American society.
The Blue Bloods vowed that their immortal status would remain a closely guarded secret. And they kept that secret for centuries. But now, in New York City, the secret is seeping out. Schuyler Van Alen is a sophomore at a prestigious private school. She prefers baggy, vintage clothes instead of the Prada and pearls worn by her classmates, and she lives with her reclusive grandmother in a dilapated mansion. Schuyler is a loner...and happy that way. Suddenly, when she turns fifteen, there is a visible mosaic of blue veins on her arm. She starts to crave raw food and she is having flashbacks to ancient times. Then a popular girl from her school is found dead... drained of all her blood. Schuyler doesn't know what to think, but she wants to find out the secrets the Blue Bloods are keeping. But is she herself in danger? (Synopsis provided by goodreads)
I really liked this book. I think what I liked the most was Cruz's unusual spin on vampires. This book was published a few months before Twilight and why it never got the same status is insane! Not only is the story more involved but Cruz's writing style is much more detailed, she created a beautiful world that draws you in from the first page. The history she gave to her vampires unlike anything I've read before. The characters are very dynamic and very different to one another. There were a few theories I had while reading this book, Cruz did a great job in "tricking" the reader, just when you think you have it all figured out, Cruz turns the tables on you and you find yourself in another world you find out you are so far off from being right. It's such an awesome book! I loved every page, and the best part? There are 5 more books to read! I have no idea why I waited so long to get this series!

Juliette hasn't touched anyone in exactly 264 days.
The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette's touch is fatal. As long as she doesn't hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don't fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.
The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war-- and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she's exactly what they need right now.
Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.
In this electrifying debut, Tahereh Mafi presents a world as riveting as The Hunger Games and a superhero story as thrilling as The X-Men. Full of pulse-pounding romance, intoxicating villainy, and high-stakes choices, Shatter Me is a fresh and original dystopian novel—with a paranormal twist—that will leave readers anxiously awaiting its sequel. (Synopsis provided by goodreads.)
Most people who read my reviews know I am not a big fan of dystopian. However, I loved this book! This is a dystopian book for people who don't normally care for dystopian novels. I found Juliette to be a wonderfully likable character, she had wit, a tender side and she could hold her own and kick ass when she needed to. Her and Adam's interactions felt very genuine. With the ending of this book I had very questions, Mafi did a stellar job in answering most of my questions by the end of this book. This book is brilliant! Run out and get a copy today! I would recommend this book to everyone!
I can't wait for book 2, it will be a long year to wait.

It’s prom night—and Perry just wants to stick to his own plan and finally play a muchanticipated gig with his band in the Big Apple. But when his mother makes him take Gobija Zaksauskas—their quiet, geeky Lithuanian exchange student—to the prom, he never expects that his ordinary high school guy life will soon turn on its head. Perry finds that Gobi is on a mission, and Perry has no other choice but to go along for a reckless ride through Manhattan’s concrete grid with a trained assassin in Dad’s red Jag. Infused with capers, car chases, heists, hits, henchmen, and even a bear fight, this story mixes romance, comedy, and tragedy in a true teen coming-of-age adventure—and it’s not over until it’s “au revoir.”(Synopsis provided by goodreads)
This is such a fun book! Each chapter begins with an essay question or statement for the main characters college applications. Very creative! I loved this book, it was non stop action packed! It starts out at a good pace with Perry setting the stage for what is to come, once Perry and Gobi leave his house it's packed with gun fights, high speed driving and professional assassination hits.
Gobi is hilarious! Within the first 20 pages readers fall in love with her humor. This is a title that people of all ages would enjoy it's also a title that would adapt well on the big screen.
Perry and Gobi are very believable characters as well as Perry's parents. The dialogue was good and the flow of this novel was wonderful, I just wish it was a little longer!
I would highly recommend this novel!

When Mimi is magically thrust into the middle of Shakespeare’s Verona, she must find a way to help Juliet fight for her future happiness. Will she be able to give this classic tragedy a happy ending? (Synopsis provided by goodreads)
This was such a cute, fresh, fun and fast read. I loved every page of it. Mimi was hilarious and Troy was annoying in a funny way. I really liked Selfors' Romeo and Juliet. She brought a new life and a new twist to them.
I have never read a re-telling that had this twist on it, so that was great. It was a very original idea and Selfors did a fantastic job in telling her version. The descriptions of 16th century Verona were so vivid you could almost smell the decay in the streets.
All of the characters were believable and Selfors explains why the characters speak in English and not in Shakespearean English. All of the questions of why, she explained which is great.
If you like re-tellings or Shakespeare in general, I would highly recommend this book.

(Synopsis provided by goodreads)
Wow.
She is defendantly an author to be watching if you aren't already. one If you haven't read Die for me, or Until I die you have to!
(less)

My life had always been blissfully, wonderfully normal. But it only took one moment to change everything. Suddenly, my sister, Georgia, and I were orphans. We put our lives into storage and moved to Paris to live with my grandparents. And I knew my shattered heart, my shattered life, would never feel normal again. Then I met Vincent. Mysterious, sexy, and unnervingly charming, Vincent Delacroix appeared out of nowhere and swept me off my feet. Just like that, I was in danger of losing my heart all over again. But I was ready to let it happen. Of course, nothing is ever that easy. Because Vincent is no normal human. He has a terrifying destiny, one that puts his life at risk every day. He also has enemies . . . immortal, murderous enemies who are determined to destroy him and all of his kind. While I'm fighting to piece together the remnants of my life, can I risk putting my heart—as well as my life and my family's—in jeopardy for a chance at love? (Synopsis provided by goodreads)
I LOVED this book, so much that I went as Kate for Halloween! I found the idea of the remnants to be unique, original and refreshing. (This is a book I gush about). I love everything about this book, the characters are very dynamic and their interactions all felt real. I really liked Vincent. (He's my new book crush!) I loved Kate, she felt really real and true to me, the type of character I would be friends with. I liked how Plum showed us how Kate was dealing with her Mom and Dad's death. Plum is a shower not a teller. I really loved chapter 6, I thought it was very sweet! Vincent felt different then other love interests in YA novels. He wasn't perfect and that's refreshing. The description of Paris and the homes were amazing. It's the first time I have wanted to visit Paris over any other city in the world. This is a series and author to watch!! This is one of my top 10 books of the year! This was such a rich and beautiful story I encourage everyone to read it. I can't wait till book 2!

Until I Die by Amy Plum
Kate and Vincent have overcome the odds and at last they are together in Paris, the city of lights and love.
As their romance deepens there’s one question they can’t ignore: How are they supposed to be together if Vincent can’t resist sacrificing himself to save others? Although Vincent promises that he’ll do whatever it takes to lead a normal life with Kate, will that mean letting innocent people die? When a new and surprising enemy reveals itself, Kate realizes that even more may be at stake—and that Vincent’s immortality is in jeopardy.
In Die for Me, Amy Plum created a captivating paranormal mythology with immortal revenants and a lush Paris setting. Until I Die is poised to thrill readers with more heart-pounding suspense, spellbinding romance, and a cliff-hanger ending that will leave them desperate for the third and final novel in the series. (Synopsis provided by goodreads)
WOW! This book blew me away. After book one which I loved I was really excited to get my hands on this one. This book picks up just after the ending of book one, Plum glosses over the events in book one in about half a page scattered throughout book two. (I do recommend you read book one before picking up book 2.)
We meet our heros again and we learn more about the revenants and the numa in this one then we did before. Their history really comes alive in this one! We also get to learn a little more about Jules and his human life, which was awesome. Though I admit I am a Vincent fan girl all the way! We get to see him grow as a character and we learn some surprising and great information about him that we never knew before.
This book for me was an emotional roller-coaster, there were twists and turns, some I guessed, some I didn't. I was literally laughing out loud, sighing, saying things like "Aw, that is so sweet!" and the very next page I was shouting "Holy Shit no way!"
By the end of this book I was crying thinking, no it did not just end like that, I keep picking it up hoping that magically there will be one more paragraph to let me know what happens to Kate and Vincent. I've never wanted the last book in a series this much.
If you liked Die for me you will LOVE Until I die. Both are great books, but with this installment Plum has shown she is a literary force that will go far. The wait for book three will be a long one for fans after that massive cliff hanger ending. (less)

This humorous, hearty, utterly delightful fairy tale is the sort for an entire family to savor together or an adventurous youngster to devour. (Synopsis provided by goodreads)
This is a fun quick book, great for parents to read with their children or for a school teacher to read a loud to their class. John Rocco did an amazing job illustrating the book. The illustrations are beautiful and the colors are vibrant. The story is good and like all middle grade kids can learn from it. The whole point of the story is to be thankful for what you have, and that is always a great message especially for children, they learn that at a young age chances are it will stay with them through out their lives.
The characters were great fun and they were pretty dynamic even for a children's book. It is an abridged version of a story from 1910, I have not read the original, so I am unable to compare the two. I believe that children would enjoy this story and if a family reads it together then they can have some great conversations about it together.
