Jolie Wilkins is a psychic plodding along happily in her comfort zone, living alone with her cat. She runs her own little mystical shop offering readings and otherworldly merchandise. She works with her best friend beautiful sexy Christa, a confident quirky and incorrigible man addict.
You just can't help but adore this girl, at 28 Jolie is seemingly naive and lacks self confidence, opting out of the dating scene in favour of cosy nights at home. Then one day Rand walks into her shop, she instantly knows he's different as she can see aura's and she's never seen one quite like his. After a few visits to the shop for readings Rand asks her to do a job for him. A job that she had no idea would change her world.
The sexual tension between Jolie and Rand bubbles away through the entire book, Jolie's life has changed she has become a pawn and a prized asset for both sides fighting a battle for control in the otherworld.
This book is a fabulous journey watching Jolie grow in confidence and self awareness as she learns her craft and strives to meet the challenges of her more complicated life. For an urban fantasy junkie like myself this has it all. Witches, Warlocks, Vampires, Werewolves, Faeries, Pixies and chaos.
This story has legs, both the plot and the characters are interesting and I look forward to the next installment.(less)

This is the first book in the Dulcie O'Neil series and really hard to review without spoilers because there were so many elements that made me chuckle I want to give examples.
The first chapter for instance, describes the main character Dulcie and my thoughts are "What??" Thankfully a girl can always rely on her best friend, in Dulcie's case Sam, a Witch and an occupation that proves extremely useful on more that one occasion for getting Dulcie out of a jam.
Dulcie is a law enforcer,an officer for the A.N.C the Association of Netherworld Creatures. She is also a Fairy which is a good job, she needs her magic because in the modern world portrayed by HP Mallory the other species co-exist with humans and are no longer confined to the netherworld. They are openly "OUT" and have been for 50 years. You have Witches, Warlocks, Vampires, Elves, Werewolves, Ogres the whole lot.
The contradictions in Dulcie's character are so amusing, she is a hard nosed, magic wielding Fairy crime fighter, who has a secret crush on her boss Quill and then goes home to write an historical romance book entering Quill's name just to ease the writers block, this did tickle me. (Not really a spoiler just a little detail)
Dulcie is assigned to the murder investigation of a Warlock, this is when things get complicated. Out of the blue an external officer arrives Knight Vander he comes from another precinct of the ANC and looks glorious. Yep a definite distraction and apparently a powerful one too.
There was so much humour in this book I did find it an addictive fast paced read. I love the little extras that make this HP Mallory's fantasy world, like fairy's have golden blood, ANC cops carry Dragon blood bullets and "a Loki" is very sexy. - A must read from this Indie Urban Fantasy author. I can't wait for the second installment. (less)
