This book is very comprehensive and looks at all of the surrounding aspects involved in proper management and rehabilitation of fearful / reactive / aggressive dogs, including:
-natural dog behavior and body language -how things like health and nutrition can affect behavior -the chemical and hormonal components of stress and how it affects learning -discussion of differing training methodologies (rewards-based vs punishment-based, including quadrants (but don't worry, it's all explained in a beautifully simple way so that anyone can understand) FOR THOSE WONDERING - this book is based on scientifically proven rewards-based training principles, NOT oldschool choke and prong, etc.) -management techniques for keeping everyone (including the dog) safe -calming techniques (massage, DAP, etc.) -training strategies to help your dog overcome their reactivity
Given the title, I was a little hesitant to purchase this book because I felt it would be mostly focused towards shy/fearful dogs, rather than fear-aggressive dogs (like mine), but I'm so glad I gave it a chance. All of the suggestions in the book translate beautifully to dogs in both camps, whether shy/fearful or full-out aggressive. While I felt there could have been more in the book on actual training, it does provide you with the information you need to get started on a plan for rehab training, with pictures and some basic strategies. I'm hoping to pick up a copy of Brown's other book, Focus, Not Fear for more in this area.
Overall, this is the most encompassing book I've read so far on helping reactive dogs, and is perfect for those who are struggling with their dog's issues and don't know what to do- Brown really takes readers by the hand, reassures them, and lays the groundwork for effective rehabilitation. I wish I had picked up a copy of this book years ago when my girl first started showing signs of aggression- oh the humiliation, tears, and aggravation we could have avoided! Still, after several books and years of research, I learned some great new ideas and information. If you own a reactive/aggressive/fearful dog, this should be the first book you get IMO. I also highly recommend Grisha Stewart's Behavior Adjustment Training for in-depth training strategies, as well as Pam Dennison's Bringing Light To Shadow, which was extremely helpful for me in understanding clearly what an effective rehab program / strategy looks like for a human-aggressive dog. Other very worthwhile books include Click To Calm by Emma Parsons, Control Unleashed by Leslie McDevitt, Fired Up, Frantic, and Freaked Out by Laura VanArendonk Baugh, How To Right A Dog Gone Wrong as well as The Complete Idiot's Guide To Positive Dog Training both by Pam Dennison, Fight!: A Practical Guide to the Treatment of Dog-dog Aggression by Jean Donaldson, and The Dog Aggression Workbook by James O'Heare....more

"New Functional Training For Sports" walks athletes through the ins-and-outs of assessing their functional strength and designing a custom program to fit their individual needs. Includes an exhaustive collection of exercises with color photos and troubleshooting, all conveniently organized into chapters such as:
-foam rolling, stretching, and dynamic warm-up -lower body training -core training -upper body training -plyometric training -olympic lifting -performance enhancer programs
The book also provides readers with access to online videos including 71 clips demonstrating many of the exercises found in the book. This is a large book (8.4 x 10.9 inches, 256p.) with thicker/quality pages that make it easier to flip through, and lots of photos to really help you understand what the exercises are supposed to look like. Overall, extremely thorough yet well broken-down to make it easy to read and understand. A great book that's loaded with information and tips, and I would say an invaluable resource to anyone who is seriously interested in competitive sports or a sports career.

Jake King is in a predicament. After finding out that his dad got laid off from a job, he’s worried that his family will have to move away from their beloved hometown of San Francisco. That is, until he comes up with a plan of his own to save the day!
In The Penny Predicament, coin-collecting Jake King sets off on a series of misadventures with his best friend Ben, little brother Alex, and wiener dog Wally, learning valuable lessons along the way about true friendship and what it really means to trust in God.
A fun and engaging book for middle graders with a wonderful faith building message. The Penny Predicament deals with common life issues that many kids today are facing and will be able to relate to, including things like bullying and financial hardships, while at the same time teaching kids how to better face those challenges with morality and integrity. I stopped reading once I got to the section on training a dog to heel, where the author actually suggests "tap him very lightly about the head with the switch, thus inducing him to fall back to his proper place. If he attempts to break away to one side or another, check him with the switch and chain, chiefly the latter." From the very first pages the author dismisses positive training by further propagating the myth that it's nothing more than bribery, and claims that nothing short of absolute obedience must be tolerated (I like to call this nazi dog training). I can't tell you the hours I've spent trying to rehab dogs who were trained this way. Not only does it break a dog's confidence in people, it's unnecessary and largely ineffective. ...more

I wasn't able to get a clear idea of whether this book was punishment based or not before reading, so I decided to take a chance, and was sadly disappointed. As someone who's switched to positive-only training, I can honestly say that forcing a dog into a position or using physical corrections doesn't work and make the training process much longer and more difficult than necessary. Also, the book doesn't really go into behavioral issues, so I think the subtitle may be a little misleading. An okay book, but if you're looking for faster results and a better relationship with your dog, positive training is the way to go....more

Forced by her mother to spend the day with other girls her age, Kaylee has no idea that she’s about to walk into the biggest nightmare of her life.
After her parents split up and she’s moved to a new town, the last thing 15 year old Kaylee wants to do is spend the day with a group of girls she hardly knows. When one of them suggests a scavenger hunt in an abandoned retirement home, she’s not sure what to expect. Certainly not to find a bruised, deaf boy alone in one of the rooms. Or that they’ve been padlocked inside…
Creepy abandoned building? Check. Shifty characters that might be harboring dark secrets? Check. A shocking discovery that leads them in a race for their lives? Double-check. Though technically a YA thriller, Resthaven is classic psychological horror at it’s best- one that will have you on the edge of your seat as you race to finish the book. Those who loved Therme’s previous novel MORTOM will not be disappointed with this fast-paced, heart-pounding read. Twists abound as young Kaylee uncovers layer by layer the mysteries surrounding her new friends, and what exactly has been going on in the eerie, abandoned retirement home called Resthaven. A fresh, gripping story with a surprising twist that makes it all but impossible to put down- highly recommended!

Jubilee Hamilton’s life is in a tailspin. She’s lost her career. Her boyfriend. And her grandpa Levy -the one member of her family who ever really cared about her- passed away, leaving her with a run-down ranch in the middle of nowhere. Hiring a foreman and running the Lone Heart Ranch seems like the craziest idea she’s ever had, but at this point, its all she has left. The only question is, can this DC city girl make it work, or is she destined for another failure- and another broken heart?
After his life is turned upside down by failed romance, the only woman Charlie wants in his life is his little girl, Lillie. As a single dad, he scrapes to get by, working multiple jobs just to make ends meet. So when he accepts a job as foreman from Jubilee Hamilton, he swears it’s just so he can save up enough money to make a better life for him and his daughter. But when a troubled young teen involved in a murder investigation shows up, everything changes as they struggle to protect their makeshift family and the run-down ranch they’ve come to call home.
Another winner from author Jodi Thomas! True to her previous works, Lone Heart Pass is one of those books that are all too easy to lose yourself in. Beautiful descriptions of the rugged Texas wilderness permeate each page as Thomas weaves together the lives of three people, so different from one another, to create one unforgettable story of loss and redemption. Readers of the previous books in the Ransom Canyon series will be happy to continue the story of Lauren Brigman and Tim O’Grady, as well as meeting some new faces that will feel like old friends by the time you turn the last page. A perfect blend of romance, mystery, and suspense. Highly recommended!
