I fell IN LOVE with JL Bryan’s Jenny Pox series in September of 2011… When I devoured the entire series in less than a week! If you NEVER read indie authors, indie books… Whatever the case may be- READ The Paranormals series by JL Bryan.
It. Is. AMAZING.
Jenny Pox will RIP your heart out, make you fall in love and believe that ANYTHING is possible. And the last 15% will leave you in utter disbelief and complete *OH MY GOD!!!!! NO FREAKING WAY THAT JUST HAPPENED!!!!!* It’s absolutely and 100% one of my Top 3 favorite books of ALL TIME.
Tommy Nightmare is just as fantastic as Jenny Pox- in a whole different way.
Alexander Death is… Um… It’s Alexander. Duh.
And let me reiterate that the Jenny Pox series is NOT a young adult series! It’s New Adult/horror all the way! It contains sexual situations, violence and SO MUCH AWESOME that its hard to wrap your head around it!
Jenny Plague-Bringer is told in alternating POVs, which by the time you get to the forth book- you know all the characters so well, that it’s REALLY fantastic to hear from everyone and get inside their heads! I LOVED it- kudos JL Bryan!
Jenny and Seth hold residence in France, where they meet Mariella… Whom came to their door searching for a boy that she incessantly dreams of every night… (*ahem* aka: Seth.) Jenny doesn’t trust Mariella and sends her away, knowing by the gloves that she wears that she must have some kind of paranormal ability also.
“Do you know what my touch does?” Jenny asked he, stepping on the escalator. “It brings pain and death. That’s all I’ve ever been to anyone.”
Tommy and Esmeralda are living day to day with no plans for their future until Ward and his cronies come to call. They want Tommy and Esmeralda to join their ranks “for the good of our country”. Tommy goes with them, but Esmeralda doesn’t!
But Ward is greedy and he wants ALL the Paranormals under his control. So anyone who refuses to go with him WILLINGLY, may not be given a CHOICE later.
OH MY GOD, right?
We learn a lot about The Paranormal’s most recent past life in Jenny Plague-Bringer… It’s mystifying and completely thrilling!
Sexy, horrifying and absolutely mesmerizing! Jenny Plague-Bringer is second only to Jenny Pox! FREAKING AWESOME!
Oh… You wanted to know about the baby mentioned in the synopsis???? Ha! Not telling!!!!! You have to read it for yourself!(less)

Purgatory is the condition of purification or temporary punishment by which those who die in a state of grace are believed to be made ready for Heaven. [from Wiki]
The in-between. Where you go when you have unfinished business of sorts. But you don’t get clued in to what is keeping you in Purgatory, one day when you overcome whatever’s got you trapped- you will turn to ash and pass on. It’s called “dimming”.
Daniel Marks version of Purgatory is a lot like high school… Ironic right? As I always thought of high school AS Purgatory… More hell… But that’s neither here, nor there.
Velveteen spends her days collecting lost souls for Purgatory and haunting her killer, Bonesaw, and trying to save his latest victims – definitely NOT for Purgatory. And her nights hanging out with her fellow Purgatorians (is that a word? Did I totally just make it up?).
Regardless of the reason- “haunting” is ILLEGAL and the absolute WORST offense a ghost can commit in Purgatory. That doesn’t stop Velveteen from doing it though.
She’s a Salvager, her and her crew go and reclaim any wandering, or trouble causing ghosts in the real world, “Her team were on it. Like black ops but ghosts.” Because a little harmless crystal ball can cause MASSIVE issues for Purgatory. Like Shadowquakes…
“A single black tentacle took shape out of the curling inky shadows. It was joined by several more that slithered down each of the four walls of the courtyard…”
But what no one knows is that there is a much darker force at large in Purgatory, plotting against the “keepers” of Purgatory and planning to bring it all down.
Will Velveteen and her crew be able to save everyone? Will she be able to accept who is responsible for such crimes against Purgatory? What is she going to do about the boy they rescued during the Shadowquake, who seems to get under her skin and wiggle his way on to her team?
Velveteen was a great read, but it was nothing like I thought it was going to be. It’s not an epic, sorrowful tale of a lost soul… It’s more like a high school drama… only instead of humans… they’re ghosts. Hmmm…
And why is the guy on the cover not wearing a basketball uniform? Assuming that’s Nick of course…(less)

We hit the ground running with Anna, Cas, Thomas and Carmel!
Cas has decided to finish out high school in Thunder Bay, while he's desperately trying to solve the mystery of what happened to Anna after she disappeared while saving their lives.
Cas KNOWS she's in pain wherever she is, because he keeps SEEING her and such... Which should literally be impossible because once a ghost has "crossed over" they're supposed to STAY there. Which in turn leads him to question further WHERE she really ended up after she disappeared with the most evil ghost Cas had ever had to cross before.
As days pass and Cas continually watches Anna burn to death, or throw herself out his bedroom window over and over again... And as it gets to be too much for him to bare any longer - he decides that NO MATTER what the cost- he WILL save her.
But who will save him from himself?
As good as Girl of Nightmares was... It sadly doesn't hold a candle to Anna Dressed in Blood. It literally KILLS me to say that, and it's quite possible that my expectations were far too high... And while I was still (mostly) riveted to the pages while Cas works through this nightmare... I was just expecting... More?
Some parts seemed rushed, others seemed way too drawn out or even completely unnecessary in my opinion. I was satisfied with the ending, it was clean and tidy, wrapped in a bow and sealed with a morbid kiss... if you will.
I don't imagine this series to continue, I can't fathom WHERE it would go. *sigh* I'm assuming this was a two book series?
Regardless, you should totally read Girl of Nightmares- as it ties up Anna and Cas's story quite nicely.
Awesome quotes from my still FAV ghost hunter:
"I think I killed a girl who looked lke this once."

That was my first thought as I started reading Dark Eden. What? I take notes, okay? Dr. Stevens is tirelessly trying to convince Will that Fort Eden, a place that specializes in helping kids overcome their fears, is the best chance he and six others has for getting help... Because she obviously can't give it to him.
"Where is this place I'm not going to, and who are these people I won't be meeting when I don't get there?" ~Will
Ha! Win. This is something I would have said to some crazy lady trying to send me off to a Fort in God only knows where to overcome my "fear". Will ends up losing that battle but has an ace up his sleeve, since he hacked the good doctor's computer and stole all the files on Fort Eden... and the audio files on the six other patients who were going with him.
"the fort was like the anti- Eden, the place left over after the fall of man-kind." ~Will, upon seeing Fort Eden the first time.
Will knows what awaits them inside Eden and he isn't having any part in it. Instead, he flies under the radar, sneaks in through the kitchen where mean old Mrs. Goring spends most of her time and hides out in the basement. While one by one the other six chosen face their deepest, darkest fears- as Will watches like a voyeur from a secret room set up like a mission control.
Slowly Will builds a relationship with Marisa (one of 'The 7') through stolen meetings and whispered conversations. But, there's a traitor in their midst... Is Marisa her? Can Will withstand the moment of truth? Will any actually of them survive Fort Eden?
Carman pulls us in a deep web of fears, life and the ultimate deceit of the one they all trusted the most... Wow! This book was seriously awesome! Toward the end, I kept glancing at the page number- thinking, "No way will he be able to pull off a satisfying ending to complete this freaking heart-stopping book." And then... he DID. Carman even took it one step further and threw in a twist I absolutely NEVER saw coming.
Dark Eden was quick, clever and completely satisfying. At first I thought I would have liked to know the characters a little better than I did... but when you experience their greatest fears, along with watching the entire plot unfold around them- while they are completely oblivious to the severity of the events taking place... it's actually very, very intimate. So I think some detachment was the entire point.
Bottom line- I'm now on the prowl for more of Patrick Carman's books! I do believe I have another addiction that needs sated! (less)

I had known that I had wanted to read Jenny Pox since Jenny, from Supernatural Snark reviewed it a couple of months ago. What I hadn't known was how much I was absolutely going to freaking LOVE it!
As book bloggers we go into every book we read, hoping to find the next "ONE". You know what I mean... The next "one" that makes you smile when you think about one of the characters, a book that moves you to tears, a book that causes you to spontaneously burst into laughter, a book that causes anger to burn deep inside... Basically: The NEXT the book that makes you FEEL real emotion.
Jenny Pox is THAT book.
I was utterly captivated by this book from the very beginning... We meet Jenny as a child of no more than four years old. You can immediately sense an undeniable sort of desperation about her, and then we're shown why. Yes, I CRIED... on page freaking THREE of this book.
Jenny can't touch ANYONE, for if she holds on for too long or bumps into someone and has too much skin on skin contact... they're dead. Jenny's touch brings to life severe pustules, boils, blisters... upon the other person or... animal.
After an incident in KINDERGARTEN when Ashleigh Goodling *cough*nasty little witch*cough* basically attacked Jenny on the playground and ended up getting gross, blistery things all over her body- and Ashleigh has affectionately called Jenny, "Jenny Pox" ever since.
Jenny has been an outcast after that fateful day.
Now, they are seniors in High School... which means Jenny is almost free of the constant sneers and general hatred thrown at her from the rest of her classmates. Since she can't risk accidentally touching someone, she figures it's best that the other kids avoid her anyway.
Everything changes the day Jenny's three-legged dog gets hit by a car and Seth (Ashleigh's perfect boyfriend) saves his life by simply laying his HANDS on him... oh and you know as an added bonus... regrows his MISSING leg!
Seth and Jenny start spending time together, and realize they might just be perfect for each other. They are so cute together that my heart was just BURSTING... Seriously.
"Will you keep me safe?" she whispered. -Jenny "I promise." -Seth "Then I'll go anywhere with you." -Jenny
I rarely get quite THIS attached to fictional characters... Jenny- I instantly want to hold and keep all the bad in the world away from her. Seth- *swoon*. Ashleigh- wouldn't have lasted a WEEK in my high school. I would've slapped the **** out of her.
Jenny can kill... Seth can heal... and Ashleigh can manipulate love... and you will NEVER in a million freaking years guess where this story will take you in the end.
J.L. Bryan is BRILLIANT. I adored every single second of this book, the ending was mind-blowing and phenomenal!!! I was completely blown away- I absolutely LOVED this book.(less)

Yeah, because of review deadlines and obligations- I JUST got around to reading Anna Dressed in Blood (this is why I’ve so allotted myself to read at least 2 books per month this year that I purchased myself AND took on some associate reviewers to help me out!! Shhhhyea I did!)
Anyway, the FIRST chapter… WOW! I was INSTANTLY sucked into Cas’s story! I’m talking completely and utterly captivated. Lord help anyone who bothered me while I was reading this book! And seriously, I have NEVER been the kind of chick to get into ‘ghost stories’ before, but Anna was absolutely AMAZING!!!!
“I don’t do what I do and receive accolades and keys to cities. I work in the dark, killing what should have stayed dead.” ~Cas
Cas isn’t your average teenager… He’s a ghost hunter. Traveling all over the country with his EPIC mother… Putting ghosts to rest, as is his legacy. His next ‘target’ is Anna… Who was brutally killed while on her way to a dance at school in the 1950′s. Story has it that when she was killed there was so much blood that it turned her white dress completely red! Therefore she’s called… Anna Dressed in Blood. RIGHT??? *chills*
This book is BRIMMING with one liners that make you seriously laugh out loud- while at the same time being totally goose-bump inducing and wicked freaking creepy!
“I can wrestle the dead all day long, but touch football might knock me unconscious.” ~Cas
Cas meets Thomas Sabin has to ‘think softly’ around him… Uh because he’s a telepath, duh! I nearly FELL OUT OF MY CHAIR laughing at ‘think softly’! I’m not even joking!
Example of EPIC mom-ness:
“My mom is there, chopping herbs for what might be dinner or might be one of her wide variety of magic spells. I see strawberry leaves and cinnamon. That’s either a love spell or the beginnings of a tart.“
We follow Cas and his band of ghostbusters (hehe) as he slowly comes to sort of care for Anna… And see her as much more than just a scary story or a monster that goes bump in the night that must be exterminated. Anna is different from any other ghost Cas has ever come in contact with… Stronger, smarter and seems to KNOW that what she’s doing is wrong.
… Oh my God. That is all I can or will say about WHAT transpires after or how Anna died. But- WOW. This book is SERIOUSLY, just WOW.
“We’d be the fricking dragon and the wicked fairy.”
• • • • • • •
“But all I get is blah blah, nod off, dead finger in my ear, snap awake. Then repeat.”
(this is perhaps the best line I’ve EVER read in my entire life. Just sayin.)
Anna Dressed in Blood scared the CRAP out of me! No joke. But it was also freaking HILARIOUS! The perfect blend of incredibly sweet romance, humor, snark AND it was completely terrifying! I LOVED every freaking SECOND of it! It was AMAZINGLY EPIC.
“I am not afraid. She’s with me. She’s my purpose and we’re going to save each other. We’re going to save everyone. And then I’m going to convince he to stay here. With me.”
All that being said, I’d just about sell my soul for a copy of Girl of Nightmares (Anna, #2)… It doesn’t come out until AUGUST!!!! And Kendare Blake joins rank with only 4 other authors to have received an EPIC rating and CROWNED review from this Brunette!(less)
