In this, the first book of the Mercy Thompson series we are introduced to Mercy and her friends and enemies as she helps stop a werewolf uprising and fix cars. To me when I read books of this type I look to and judge them by the books written by Kelley Armstrong in her otherworld series and I am happy to say this these books belong next to hers in someone's library.(less)

This one is about Venessa, a pianist who has travels all over the world and is very famous. She comes home to try and heal old wounds with her mother and other things that she isn't even sure of herself. She meets up with an old flame and things go from there. If you are a fan of Ms Roberts you know that the path of love is never even or easy but fun to follow as she writes it. (less)

As I was born in and lived in Texas until I was 16 and being interested in history, I decided to read this to find out the early history of Texas from someone who had been there from the early days before it was a state up to the start of the civil war.
Noah Smithwick (1808-1899) at the age of 19 went to Texas. He was there when it was still part of Mexico, during the war for independence, when it became a state and left when the civil war started, going to California. His story of what life was like then, how poor most people were, what the war with Mexico was like, battles with indians and different stories about his life and different people he met and knew or heard of during that time.
Although I did not know anyone from his era, I did have relatives born in the 1880's or 90's (including one uncle who had gone down to Mexico during the revolutions in the early 1900's as a gunfighter) and told stories told to them when they were kids plus stories of their life during their early years in Texas.
As I said this is not a book for everyone but if you want to hear the real story of the frontier and or have an interest in history, you might enjoy it. (less)

When Ariana of Clairmont went to the docks with her guard/escort James she had no idea what she was getting into, all she knew was that she had to get to France and deliver, as ransom, some papers her brother Kenrick had been working on before he was captured. When she goes to meet Ferrand, the ships master he was arguing with a man with a long knife scar on his face. When Ferrand takes her money and tries to kidnap her she is saved by the man, Braedon LeChasseur (The Hunter) and together they go to France to try and save her brother from Silas De Montaine. The man who has hired Braedon to recover a cup, on of the four parts of the Dragon Chalice, and the thief who took it and when it is recovered, along with Draec Le Nantres, who had been one of Breadons men, killed all but Braedon and one other.
Will Ariana learn to trust and even love Braedon? If she does will he be able to open his heart and let her in? Will they be able to save Kenrick and keep De Montaine from getting another part of the Dragon Chalice?
Find out as you read this very good (but not Great) sword and sorcery book.(less)

In the case of Just Cause they train, they go out on patrol and maybe nab a purse snatcher or stop a woman from jumping off a bridge or perhaps they hold a weekly poker game that lately has developed into an almost anything goes party. Bur perhaps that is going to change, when a young woman who killed her rapist by creating a vacuum and imploding his organs comes to the city and a barely teenage boy engineering genius who hates almost everyone and everything except maybe his younger sister builds a giant robot that has the power to destroy almost anything and decides to get even for all the bullying that he has gone through.
Mr Healy has writing a good entertaining book that has the elements needed for a good story. That said this was also a book that I did not find to be one I started and didn't want to put down but more one that I would pick up and read with my morning coffee, thus the 4 star rating instead of 5 stars. This is one of those books that you read when you find yourself with free time and want something that is just pure escapism.(less)

In this story, about 3 sisters who will inherit a large ranch but only if they live there together for a year; this despite the fact that they have never even met each other before as all have different mothers and same father. This story describes their trials, loves and just plain trying to get along with each other.
One thing, I would not recommend this book for readers under 16 or 17 due to violence and some non-graphic sex.(less)

As he heals from the wounds he received he starts to see more to Serena and by accident he finds out that by touching someone or something with her bare hand Serena can learn all their memories and feelings.
Will the feelings Rand starts to have for Serena cause him to give up his quest to find the last part of the chalice or will his desire for revenge cause him to lose her? Also who are Serena and Calander and where did her powers come from and why do they live in the glade away from everyone. What secret does Calander have?
In this the third and last book of the Dragon Chalice series the answers will come with a twist at the end that I didn't see coming till the very last.(less)

The book is different columns he wrote during his career and are about many things. Things like trains, people, food, airline travel, wife's and Chicago. One work of warning and this is why I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5 is this is a old book written about things (mainly) in the 1970's, but it is still a good read about life in a era long gone much to many of our regrets.(less)

In this book, number 2 of the Dragon Chalice series, written under a pen name by Lara Adrian, the author of the Midnight Breed series and reissued is a great read of the sword and sorcery genre with big male heros and strong female heroines which will keep the read entertained and wanting more. This book was hard for me to rate at first. When I read an outline of the book it seemed like one I would like. Middle ages England, magic, human interest and even a werewolf thrown in for good measure but when I started to read it I found it hard to get interested in the characters as the author jumped from one character to another and I planned to give it no more than 3 stars. However after about the first half of the book I found myself getting more and more interested in the characters and wanting to see what happened next, thus the 4 star rating. Another note, this is book 4 of the series and perhaps if I had read the first 3 books my opinion of this book at the start would have been different.
In this book Deirdre is the daughter of the last Merlin (here a title more than a person). It follows her as she tries to understand her magic, survive her cousin Betsy, who also has magic powers and wants to be the Pendragon or protector of England and her family who all have different parts of her life. It is the story of her life starting when she is attacked by werewolfs. Follows her and her cousin Hal as they travel to France to try and stop another massacre of French Catholics. It tells how Hal is captured by the man who calls himself the master of the werewolfs and against his will turned into a werewolf. Her uncle who is walking a fine line between being loyal to Elizabeth and his love for Mary, Queen of Scots. How she is sent to London and becomes first a Lady-in-Waiting then a spy for Elizabeth. Her arranged marriage, her adventures as she tries to protect Elizabeth, keep her uncle from going too far in his love for Mary, trying to cure Hal and just figuring out who she is and will be.
As stated above, I found it hard to get interested in the first part of the book but if a reader continues on they will find they end up with a very good and readable book. (less)
