Ms. Scottoline is ingenious and full of life as you'll be able to tell from listening to her recount some of her weekly Chick Wit column in the Philadelphia Inquirer and additional stories on life, love, family and pets from her outlook, which can be a comical one to say the least.
I'm not the only one who thinks of chloroforming her own mother, or so I learned from Why My Third Husband Will Be a Dog. This audio book had be cracking up at some of the shenanigans Ms. Scottoline comes up with. Listening to Why My Third Husband Will Be a Dog was like listening to a friend chatting away over a cup of coffee at the kitchen table. There are many moments of laughter as you learn that her favorite type of pornography is the real estate ads, thongs are the most expensive sling-shots, and interrupting is a sign of enthusiasm. There were also somber moments as she talks about her father, her daughter graduating college, and watching her dog fall ill.
This audio book was made better by having been read by Ms. Scottoline herself, along with a guest appearance from her daughter, Francesca Serritella, because only she could have known the exact tone the story needed to be read in. Women and men alike will find something to laugh and smile about in this riotous romp. I'd definitely recommend both the audio and print versions of Why My Third Husband Will Be a Dog... but, if you're able to, definitely get the audio version ;) It will definitely lighten your day and make you see the comical side of things.
Side note... I always feel that when I write a review, it should sound... I don't know, kind of professional or something, lol. (um, trust me, I'm not saying my reviews are professional, not by a long shot) Sometimes I want to add silly things :)
I do want to say, I got to listen to this audio book on a recent trip to Laredo, TX. Usually, I'm knocked out during road trips... nothing can help it, lol. This time, though, I couldn't help but want to stay awake through each story being told. See, I can't read during road trips as I get car sick. A tragedy, I know *sigh*. And, unless I'm doing a road trip, I don't really have the attention span to listen to an audio boo--... look, squirrel! lol
My friend, Alberto, was driving (thank the Heavens, lol), so he had to listen to the audio book, too... whether he liked it or not. Luckily, he did like it :) Hmm... I hope it wasn't because he related some of Ms. Scottoline's antics to me *hmph* lol.
Anyway, I do highly recommend this audio book if you're in the mood for something light and fun. I've already put in my order for My Next Isn't Empty, It Just Has More Closet Space audio book by Lisa Scottoline... now to find somewhere to drive to, lol... hmm, Louisiana, here I come!(less)

Ready or not, she must now perform the seduction ceremony on Titus and Reno, two immortal prisoners of the Conclave, and take their energy.
Reno is new to his immortal life. Soon after becoming immortal, he's caught and held hostage by cult followers. While unsure of what is to become of him, the moment Lillian enter their prison cell, he's certain that he's never wanted another woman as much as he wants her.
Titus has been a prisoner of the Conclave for close to three hundred years. His deep hatred for them is obvious. So how can it be that he now desire the high priestess of the very people he abhors?
Guilt soon starts to consume Lillian. Will she be able to right a wrong and help the two rogues she has come to care for, or will the secret and lies hold her back?
If I wasn't already a fan of Kris Cook's, Lillian's Rogues would have sealed the deal. This novella intrigued me from the beginning and held me captive the moment Lillian, Titus and Reno shared a scene together.
Lillian Devereaux came to Titus and Reno with strong prejudice. To watch her fight her inner demons and see the truth before her is refreshing. I enjoyed how, even with the attraction there, Lillian didn't come to Titus and Reno and instantly fall for them. No, after years of being taught that these two men were the enemy, Lillian has trouble understanding her growing feelings for them. She slowly realizes how wrong the lessons she'd been taught since childhood might have been.
It's hard not to fall for both Titus and Reno. Kris Cook has a way of writing heroes who are both strong and powerful, yet at the same time, have their own strength and weakness that seemingly balance each other out. Titus is a darker hero who seems to have blackened his heart after years of captivity. There's turmoil within him as he tries to fight his feelings for Lillian. Reno, on the other hand, welcomes the moments he's able to spend with Lillian, no matter the pain. He's the light to Titus' darkness.
A touching read, I'd highly recommend Lillian's Rogues for a steamy, hot and sexual escape. This novella was very engaging and I didn't feel cheated as one might when reading a novella length story. From beginning to end, this is one very satisfying story that shows just how much love can win over hatred.
This novella is part of a series, but can easily be read as a standalone. (less)

Just about every day. An intense hypochondriac, Justine is sure that any minute now a blood vessel is going to burst in her brain. But, out of nowhere, someone seems to offer a cure.
Packard looks into Justine's soul and sees her as someone who could be very useful to his disallusionist team. Thinking of this as a temporary way to deal with her hypochandria, Justine agrees to join Packard. Soon, Justine is being trained to use her fears as a weapon against criminals and in turn freeing herself from the pain and panic. It seems like a great way to get a handle on her hypochondria... at first.
While Justine has been successful in her firsts missions, her next has her questioning Packard's true purpose. And, before long, Justine finds herself fighting an attraction to two distinct men, making her resolve to find the truth that much stronger. With Packard's help, she's now free from her neurosis, but has this only bound Justine tighter to this man? Has she traded in her madness only to find out the world is a scarier place than her mind?
It was easy for me to connect with Justine. While dealing with health issues due to her hypchondria, Justine never wallows in self-pity. She's not like the average kick-butt heroine, but a normal girl who was thrust into abnormal circumstances. Well, maybe not too normal if you think about her hightened hypchondria, but hey, everyone has their quirks. Which is why I not only fell in love with Justine, but all the secondary characters as well.
Packard was hands down my favorite secondary character, and I do so hope to see more interaction between him and Justine in the next two books. He has a quiet alpha quality about him and seems to have his thoughts well guarded, although at times letting it down around Justine. I loved the scenes between Justine and Packard. You can see the change and growth in their relationship. They become attuned to one another, even through their anger towards each other.
Mind Games was a mind blowing read! I did not want to put this book down, and even lingered towards the end so I wouldn't finish too soon. First in a trilogy, Mind Games brings you into a different world where highcaps and disillusionist live secretly among average citizens. This story captures your attention from the get-go as it unfolds and brings to light an ingenius plot author Carolyn Crane has woven.
This story line was very original and exceptional. It had much depth and showed how the lines can sometimes blur between good and evil.
While I may be a die-hard romance reader, if I had to choose my favorite read of this year so far, hands down, Mind Games would take top place. What a brilliant and awesome debut for an author. This book has put Ms. Crane on my list of authors to be on the watch for.
Though, not be a huge urban fantasy reader, if I could find more superb and entertaining stories like Mind Games, that might soon change. This will definitely be re-read for me and a book that I'm definitely recommending to everyone.
P.S. Dude, this makes the sci-fi geeky girl in me happy, hehe. I loved how this story gave me a comic book feel. Another reason I may understand Justine? I'm a bit of a hypochondriac myself... you don't even want to know what I thought was wrong with me the other night, lol. This book was so fantabulous and I've already pre-ordered book two! *yay* (less)
