Possibly a conquistador. I'll accept conquistador.
ANYWAY. Also virtually zero chemistry with Hugh, but enough with Samir to make me believe it (except all the pillagey verbiage). I did not love how bumpkiny Maggie came across. I'm from South Carolina, and while there are some rural-ass areas of the state (like 70% of it), and plenty of provincial jerkoffs in it, someone like Maggie, who wants to get away, who wants to go to Harvard (slash, Europe), is going to have a little but better handle on the world/herself in the world.
But I LOVED how diverse the cast was. Like effortlessly, none of this I Need A Racially Diverse Cast So Here's An Arab, but just, there it is. I loved that Maggie and Fleur became besties. There's so much girl-hate in NA (and in general), that it was so refreshing to see the MC make friends with that girl no one seemed to be able to make friends with. Loved that. ...more

It's real and thoughtful and painful and sweet, and doesn't pander to any of the bullshit tropes that have emerged. Lizzie is sympathetic without being pathetic, and Connor is strong and supportive, and ALL this is done without infantilizing or trivializing Lizzie (or her problems). The fact that L's got family that isn't all dead or alcoholic or whatever, and real, actual, sweet, supportive female friends, is so completely fucking amazing, and so refreshing in a genre that has a tendency to hyperfocus on m/f romantic relationships to the exclusion of everything else. Love. Love love love.

I'm actually having a really hard time articulating my feelings, and I have a lot of them, so I'm just going to transcribe the flaily tweets about it, mostly directed at Dahlia Adler, who had already read it, loved it, and thrust it upon me.
Oct 6: @sarataylorwoods: Just added a @MissDahlELama rec to my GR currently-reading so basically I'm just counting down the seconds until she likes it.
Oct 6: @sarataylorwoods: @MissDahlELama OH MY GOD D THIS BOOK.
Oct 6: @sarataylorwoods: @MissDahlELama DEEPER. I'm like 16 pages in and Jesus H, this shit is intense.
Oct 6: @sarataylorwoods: @MissDahlELama It's so unflinchingly real. Like I can't come up with any other NA that's that honest.
[Oct 6: @caramckenna: @sarataylorwoods @MissDahlELama I was so physically uncomfortable, I couldn't finish it. Though my headspace had been iffy at the time.]
Oct 6: @sarataylorwoods: @caramckenna @MissDahlELama This actually makes me more excited. I love books that make me uncomfortable because that's brave storytelling.
Oct 6: @MissDahlELama I HAVE SO MANY FEELINGS ALREADY (page 31, page fucking 31, D)
Oct 6: This book may be the best $5 I've spent in like a year.
Oct 6: @MissDahlELama The library. IN THE LIBRARY. Look at my face, I am literally dying.
Oct 6: @MissDahlELama I'm actually JEALOUS of this book. Every time I read a line, I'm like, fuck, why doesn't mine sound that good?
Oct 6: @MissDahlELama I want to un-email Lana and be like HOLD ON LEMME JUST LINE EDIT EVERYTHING AGAIN
Oct 7: @MissDahlELama I'm just going to schedule a few tweets a day squeeing over this book.
Oct 7: @MissDahlELama You were right in all ways about this book, about tropes working because they're finally believable. Jesus Christ on toast.
Oct 7: @MissDahlELama THE ROOF, D. LOOK AT ALL MY FEELINGS. I HAVE SO MANY.
Oct 7: @MissDahlELama HOW AM I EVEN AT WORK LIKE THIS RIGHT NOW? MY HEART IS A PLOPPY PILE OF MUD AND STARS.
Oct 8: @MissDahlELama This book is KILLING me. I am LITERALLY DYING.
Oct 8: @MissDahlELama Which btw is taking forever because I'm forcing myself to only read a few pages at a time because if I don't I'll just binge.
Oct 8: @LucyVMorgan OMIGOSH how have I not asked you yet if you've read Robin York's NA DEEPER? It is killing me. I am literally dying.
Oct 8: @LucyVMorgan God, it is just everything. Like it's got all these NA tropes of good girl/bad boy whatever, but for the 1st time I BELIEVE it.
Oct 8: @LucyVMorgan The writing is so simple/down-to-earth beautiful it's making me jealous. Like I want my last ms back so I can line-edit again.
Oct 8: I'm reading like 20 pages at a time of DEEPER. It's basically like the handful of candy corn I sneak every time I walk into the kitchen.
Oct 8: It's so good, I mean I fucking love it, but too much and I get overwhelmed by feelings. I have to chew and digest.
Oct 8: Plus I kind of don't ever want it to end.
Oct 8: @CandiceAmanda Probably being noted as BEST NA EVER. Like I need everyone to use this as their model.
Oct 8: @CandiceAmanda You can be tropey, yes, absolutely. You can do whatever the fuck you want AS LONG AS YOU DO IT WELL.
Oct 9 [approx. 2 a.m.]: @MissDahlELama I finished DEEPER and I can't talk to you until Saturday and I don't know if I can handle that.
[@LiaRileyWrites: Oct 9: @sarataylorwoods West. @MissDahlELama]
Oct 9: @LiaRileyWrites @MissDahlELama I just...I can't think right now. I have a lot of feelings.
Oct 9: @LiaRileyWrites It's so stupid how every time we're reminded he's wearing that damn ballcap I was like, be still my vagina. @MissDahlELama
Oct 9: @LiaRileyWrites Like what the shit is that? I don't even like boys in ballcaps. I think they're absurd. @MissDahlELama
Oct 9: @LiaRileyWrites Family man. OYYY. @MissDahlELama
[@LiaRileyWrites: Oct 9: @sarataylorwoods i might have whimpered during the library scene @MissDahlELama]
Oct 9: @LiaRileyWrites And also the roof. And also her bedroom with the Christmas lights. And also all the phone calls. @MissDahlELama
Oct 9: @LiaRileyWrites I kind of want to read this again immediately. @MissDahlELama
Oct 9: @LiaRileyWrites This is legitimately one of the best books I've read this year. @MissDahlELama
Oct 9: @LiaRileyWrites I haven't been this affected by a book in ages. I feel like I've been suckerpunched. In a good way. @MissDahlELama...more
