You love the romance. It's sweet, it's dark, it's compelling. The character's are all so lovely-- the bitter, scathing Rosalie; laughable, jocund Emmett; scarred, broken Jasper; sweet, maternal Esme; et cetera, et cetera.
Looking deep is a problem. Midnight Sun provided an image I really didn't need. Thoughtless monsters, that's what they are. Take a look at the scene discussing Bella's demise. Or their reaction to his 'la tua cantante'. They're inhumane and callous-- all but one, Carlisle. The good doctor, the only flaw is his perfection.
If this is all so obvious, why don't more people realize? The problem is Bella.
I have no tiff with Bella. Sure, a little too ideal, but that's not a crime. The problem is she's an unreliable narrator, and no one realizes. She finds fault in no one, not the devilish vampires set on her her death, nor the unkind brats she associates herself with at school, or the even the Volturi (although she does find fault with their actions... Close enough, right?). How can we expect her to see these amoral, twisted vampires with any clarity?
Twilight is completely morphed by this girl's perception of the world, and Midnight Sun is by the vampire's lack of morals (other than marriage, of course) and prejudice of humankind. .
Stephenie Meyer tells a creative story, and she writes it well. Try reading The Host. (less)

I really enjoyed some of the stories, but some of them were just dull to me.
I found that many of the stories felt wrong for me, either too slow or too incomplete. I know this is a bit harsh, but I can't help but feel disappointed in some of these authors.
On the other hand, there's a large variety of paranormal stories, so if you are even vaguely interested in the paranormal romance, you are likely to find at least one story that you fancy. (less)
