Not at all what I was expecting. Where was the Alice in Wonderland association??? Where was the cool zombie scenes?? Absent apparently. What I got instead was an incredibly predictable and unimaginable plot, with a boring main character and really bland writing.
You can't built a story up by describing it as a Alice in wonderland inspired story with zombies and not at all live up to that statement. Instead what was offered was boring high school scenes, a dominating alpha male/brute of a guy that our main protagonist falls head over heels for (of bloody course, how predictable! WRITERS COME UP WITH SOMETHING NEW PLEASE!!!!! I BEG YOU!!!!) And I quote she says she obsessed with him before she even has a single conversation with him. Right.... Totally normal! I’m sick of reading the same 'non-existent' development of romance between the main two lovers in a story.

This is Not a Test, tells the story of Sloane and the outbreak of Zombies that occur. The outbreak happens so quickly that many are court off guard and killed, leaving minimal survivors. Sloane get picked up among the way but some other teens that all went to school together. Finding refuge in their High School, and blocking all the exits/entry ways - in order to stop the zombies from getting in and hunting them down. They seclude themselves inside, but the plus side is they have running water and food. Now they must play the waiting game. They may actually get through this all and survive, but that’s the exact opposite of what Sloane wants....
Sloane wants to die... her father severely abuses her, as well as her older sister. Her sister, Lily, and her planned to leave and escape their tormenter. They made plans; Sloane stole money from her father to give to Lily and save it for them. Sloane was all packed, but she woke up one day and Lily was gone. Lily left her behind. Lily left her to suffer alone... Now Sloane just wants to escape it all and die, but hiding away in a school form the zombies is messing up her plan. In the meantime the only thing that gives the other students hope, is the lady on the radio, Tina T (This is Not a, Test), telling them that there is help, there is shelter that they will be saved...
This is a pretty good zombie book; it has lots of action, suspense and killer scenes where you could almost imagine seeing it in a movie. The only problems I had with this book is that the zombie outbreak is never explained, everybody just woke up one day and zombies were eating people on the street - where the heck did it come from? And how did it suddenly just happen one day with no explanation. At least in Resident Evil, the disease was developed by scientists and it spread from the facility to the outside world. But in this there’s nothing. Secondly, the cut off/open ending. It sucked, I’m sorry, it really did.
I liked how this novel was written, with Sloane in the present, and also her reflecting on the past, with snippet flashbacks - mostly about memories with Lily. The novel is cut up into 4 parts, which I’m not sure is necessarily needed. But you know, all in all a pretty interesting story and novel. I'll have to keep a look out for other novels by Summers....more
