An impossibly hard book to review. My feelings for this novel are tied and are hard to really decipher and interpret. I enjoyed this novel, I did. So unique, so interesting and so different from any novel out today; no werewolves, vampires, witches or any of that usual themes. This novel offers adventure shrouded in mystery. The theme is about a welsh legend that is trying to be uncovered by multiple people and all for different reasons. I am a big king Arthur fan myself so this novel held a lot of potential and interest for me – looking at the truth behind the legend. But I feel that the one thing I was overall disappointed in was the lack of actual events that transpired in the novels story overall.
Its story is quiet a slow one, with nothing much happening in most of the story. The novel has a good mixture of characters that the story is told from; almost 5 in total. And to say that this didn’t annoy me is a big thing for me as you should all be aware of by now that I am not a big fan of multiple POV's in novels, but Stiefvater also has a way of making multiple POV's work, that comes from great skill as a writer. Stiefvater has a way of writing passages and scenes, even lines that suck you in. Lines written so magically and beautifully that it’s no wonder fans adore her novels.
But I must admit I was kinda disappointed with this novel, though I do not blame that all on her. I think this is because I saw every reader give it 4-5 stars and so instantly believed that this novel would be amazing and blow my mind, so going into this novel with that thought, probably didn’t help in anyway.
Still I can see how other readers loved this novel, and had it not been for the lack of actual events that transpired in the novel, all the questions that were raised and most left unanswered and the undeveloped love life of Blue, I most definitely would have loved it too. But if I’m to speak honestly those things did kind of bug me, especially considering how large the novel ways. Still I look forward to reading book 2 and finally getting some answers and that probably means I will thoroughly enjoy book 2 more than I did with book 1. I hope none of you judge me too much for not loving it as much as most of you out there did.(less)

How do you rate a book if you only liked half of it?? How often do you come across a book that you really like for the first half then the style completely changes and you don't like it anymore...???
The Name of the Star, starts off being a novel about the killings of Jack the Ripper, someone is going around killing people in the same way and in the same places as the infamous Jack the Ripper. This all intrigued me, I was so curious and excited with this plot, it was interesting and soo different.
However when you reach the halfway point it changes. We discover the book is about ghosts??? Honestly I didn’t see this coming; which makes readers believe that the thing going around killing people is actually the real ghost of Jack the Ripper, when really it isn’t. It’s just some other dude going around killing people like the Ripper did :S hmm ok then..??
*contains some spoilers - but not major ones* We also learn that there is a secret part of the police force which has the 'sight' meaning they had a near death experience which then enables them to see dead people. Enter Rory. Our leading American girl who comes to Britain to go to school. Readers soon discover she can see dead people, and she keeps bumping into their weird really creepy scary guy, three guesses who he is? (Cause it isn't bluntly obvious). *spoilers finish*
Unfortunately the second part of this novel just kind of ruined the book for me, and the love I had for it in the beginning half was gone. It just got too silly in the end. So hopefully if your going into reading this novel knowing what you now know about it, you will probably have a better reading experience than I did. I might attempt the second one, will see when the blurb for it is released. (less)

After being thorughly dissapointed with Marr's first novel; Fury I decided to give her next novel Preloved a go, to see if I would like this one more than I did her first, unfoturtuantly that wasnt the case.
Preloved; while it states it is a young adult book I would dissagree, the writing style and language used came off as a much younger aged book than those of us who are used to reading young adult novels. Secondly I couldn't connect with the story or characters; the story was very bland, and the characters weren't loveable. Which is dissapointing, because it is so hard reading a novel when you don't love/like the characters within it. Sadly, this novel did nothing for me, but it may do more for others.
It appears that Marr's writing style and concepts within her novels are just not for me.(less)

As good as the first one (not better, not worse). We are still left with not knowing what kind of supernatural Kylie is, though it is pretty obvious to me that she is some kind of hybrid uber special being. As shes got a combination of differetn powers; she has fairy, were, shiter and vamp abilities. Im curious to see what Hunter will end up saying she is, though going by how the series is progressing it looks doubtful that we will discover what she is in the next novel, though that would be dissapointer because there is only soo long you can drag that out.(less)

Well people I stand corrected. I stated in my last review that looking at how the books are progressing (my joke of saying they aren’t, cause nothing really ever happens in them - come on people its true!) we won't find out what Kylie really is for a while. But folks I am wrong, I stand corrected!! It is finially revealed in this book.... but on nearly the very last page haha. But yes we finally find out what Kylie is... and it is pretty interesting. But not at all shocking I'm afraid.
Though I don't know if it’s me or it’s this series, but I’m getting a little over it... I feel like every book in this series is just exactly the same to the last. I still enjoy them... not as much as I once did as they feel very very repetitive. I feel like I'm reading the same thing everytime. Della and Miranda fight, the love triangle continues with Kyle and Derek and Lucas, the constant fighting the love between Holiday and Burnette, Kylie talking to ghosts and trying to find out who they are send them on their way, people die (though the people that do die you don't care about because you don't know their characters very well to feel moved by it... So yer,.. But I'll still keep reading them.. Im just hoping something new happens and that the next one is a little bit more exciting.(less)

Major. Let. Down.
How un-surprising that the last novel in the Hex Hall series would be a major let down and be utterly disappointing. Eghh its infuriating some of the events that transpired in the novel and readers you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about when you read it.
The novel is un-funny – though it does try very hard to be so, but I’m afraid it falls short in the funny department. Looks like Hawkins used up all her cans of funny in the previous two books, and these books cannot survive without the funny. The funniness is what makes these books. This is the first major down fall.
The second is the story line, it’s just kind of jumbled and rushed and doesn’t feel right. It feels like Hawkins has just made up stuff and chucked it in there just to chuck it in there, not caring if it actually fits right into the story. Also Sophie I loved in the previous two novels, in this book however I did not, she did so many things I don’t agree with and made her very unlikeable. I’m just amazed how a book series that started off amazing ended up so crappy and silly? Perfect example of this though is the Strange Angels series, same problem.
The other major let down is the big impending battle in the end. Yer it’s not a big battle at all. It goes for 14 pages!!!! That’s it; the big battle that was built up in every novel goes for 14 pages!! Was the most stupidest boringest battle ever, they don’t even defeat the big evil themselves, they have (view spoiler)[ her sister to thank for that, imagine if you guys actually had to fight someone yourselves, you guys would have your arses handed to you on a plate (hide spoiler)]. Oh and yer they go to the underworld and oh that’s excited and is explored... yer no – under 10pages. So many times Hawkins could have explored and delved into deeper many of the things she introduced in the novel but she doesn’t, instead she filled the book with boring and not needed/unnecessary scenes.
I think Cal is the most unlucky character in the world, he is constantly getting f***ed over in every book and this book is no different, with this one being the worst of the them all with...(view spoiler)[Cal getting to finally make out with Sophie, or so he thinks, it’s actually Elodie possessing her body. So Cal is f***ed over by that. Secondly, Hawkins kills him off!!! He already had a shit existence throughout the novels; with him seeing his fiancée go off with someone else, and instead of giving him a nice happy ending – because he deserves it – YOU KILL HIM OFF!!! Not fair. Poor Cal. (hide spoiler)] And there you have it. The last novel, is the let down of the series and such a dissapointment. Oh well, it only took me a day to read, so not that much is lost.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>(less)
