Darhower was releasing another book. ‘Sempre’ was one of my all-time favourite stories and who doesn’t love it when an author you love and respect, releases something new to sink your teeth into?
However, when I found out that this new release was a paranormal romance, an angelic one at that, I became a little nervous. I am not a big fan of Angel books. I often feel that books about angels tend to be incredibly cheesy and overly dramatic and one of my absolute favourite things about ‘Sempre’ was how real it all was. Naturally, my trepidation was a little high when I first opened my copy of ‘Extinguish’.
After the first few pages my trepidation increased and I felt a little disappointed as the story plunges into a world that seems to be exactly what I was afraid of… dripping with cheese - Michael and Serah prancing around in a field of wild flowers. It was too angelic, too strange, too difficult to find a connection in Serah (our angelic main character).
After that first chapter however, everything changed. The entire stereotype I had begun to imagine for the rest of the book blew up the minute Luce stepped into the picture and from what I now know, having read the entire book in record time, it was all very necessary for me to feel that way. In fact, it somehow added to the entire experience because I was more a part of Serah’s journey than I could have been had it started out any other way.
‘Extinguish’ is filled with all the right things that build up a story and fill it with life. Nothing is predictable. Nothing is a stereotype. The story is beautiful and J.M. Darhower has officially created the ultimate fantasy ‘bad-boy-who-is-not-really-bad-but-actually-is’. Confusing? You’ll only understand what I am on about when you read the book… and you should most definitely read it if you enjoy fantasy novels or paranormal love stories.

It made me feel quite ignorant of the things that happen all around us here in SA and definitely made me wish this man didn't have to retire, although he definitely deserves it. I would recommend this to everyone but definitely to my fellow South Africans! :)

The story is filled with crazy amounts of touching, sad and hilarious moments. You wouldn't think a zombie story could be all that funny but right from the first page I found myself laughing out loud at the visuals Isaac Marion's words were evoking! R is a fantastic character to share a mind with. I absolutely loved everything about his thoughts, feelings, developments and especially his sense of humour and blatant honesty!
Besides for a great main character, all the other characters throughout the book were perfectly rounded and incredibly real and interesting. And to top it all off, not only did the story provide me with hours of great imaginative entertainment but it was aslo really thought provoking by touching on some real issues regarding the human condition!
As crazy as a zombie story might be, it felt incredibly real and possible. And I was left feeling sad it was over but satisfied with the entire story!

Brodi Ashton has created an entirely new world in a genre which has, in some ways, been over explored. That in itself is a reason to read this. I found that there are so few young adult fantasy romances I can still read and thoroughly enjoy. Books such as 'Everneath', 'Anna Dressed in Blood', 'Ultraviolet', 'Daughter of Smoke and Bone', 'The Hunger Games' or 'Unearthly' are what keep me reading novels in this genre.
They are refreshing in the sense that the world's the authors have created are different and the characters are well rounded. I find the whole love triangle thing or the whole falling in love overnight thing, so unrealistic and tiring. There is nothing more frustrating to me than buying a book because the story sounds so interesting and then the main character falls in love almost instantaneously with some mysterious bad boy or something along those lines. It is so flaky and takes so much away from the romance to me. There is something so special about a love story that develops or that is based in reality. I know they are young adult novels and the characters tend to be teenagers... but that doesn't mean they just fall in love at every turn or if some hot guy looks at them.
Anyway, enough ranting. Everneath is not one of those stories and I think you will fall in love with the characters in this book. There is a kind of 'love triangle' but the thing that makes it realistic to me is that it isn't the main characters love triangle created from her indecisiveness. It's one that she is a part of and doesn't want to be.
And besides all of that, Jack alone is reason enough to read this book :P
What an ending! I absolutely adore this series! It completely fulfills my strange complusion for good young-adult fantasy romance novels :-P

I cannot wait for the next installment. The Everneath is a fascinating place and I loved being able to spend some time there and to learn so much more about the characters. I absolutely adore them and the completely unpredictable nature of this series! Just as you think you know exactly what is going on and you start to develop pictures and thoughts on where Brodi Ashton is taking the story, it will surprise you and change everything.(less)
