The Hallowed Ones was an amazing adventure unlike any normal tromp through the woods.
The Mad Scientist fully admits that friends of the bookish sort on GoodReads pressured her into wanting, No, needing to read this one. An Amish book? One might ask but I have one small short answer for you! Undoubtedly!
Let me (us) examine the why's of why this book is highly recommended.
~If you want a book that you will be unable to put down... This one will do that to you! ~If you want a book that will surely freak you out at a few points... This one will do that! ~If you want a book about a genre you thought possibly couldn't get any better.... This book will do that for you too! ~If you want a book about the end of the world... This one is without a doubt for you!
Now that we established a bit of a base to the this inky goodness I do believe I can continue forward.
I assure you that there are no vampires of the sparklely nature in The Hallowed Ones. They will freak you out, I am sure of this. As they did to myself, nearly ruffling the hairs on the back of my neck.
The "Plain Folk" of the Amish sort are new to the Mad Scientist in book form. I must say that I just adored the young heroine of this book. I also adored the lengths that Laura Bickle took to describe the community. Katie was simple, yet did not follow so blindly. I do believe that one must ask questions. The rebellious side of Katie has surprises a plenty that will shock even your frilly panties in between these covers. Naughty Girl!
One of the bits that chill you to the bone... or at least the Mad Scientist's metal clockwork heart... being trapped. Nothing like being a chicken in a coop waiting for the fox to grab the tail feathers. The Amish were in a sense on lock down. This choice made me think that this might be the end of them, however, I knew that they would not want it any other way. Would the evil make it through or under their wooden fence? *Shivers* The results would stir even the gentlemanly of the gentlemen!
From the start, it is a bit slow. From the end, the story is ripped apart. Please do make sure your kindle or Nook is fully charged!

Vampire Hunter/Slayer is not a new concept. However, I have not watched or read any of Buffy so I will not be comparing at all.
The young Val Shapiro is the vampire hunter within Bite Me who is girl who is trying to find herself among a world she does not feel apart of. One thing stands in the way... she is part demon. Lola is the other side of Val, who has to feed and she loves lust from men.
Val found a way to dampen her powers from the demon blood in slaying vampires. Using her unique status to keep her city safer. Meanwhile, it is enough to keep the sassy Lola in check. Yet, Val was still scorned by her family.
She was used as a escape goat for things that went wrong. Continually being blamed for anything that goes wrong. Finally, she was told to stay away from her family.
What was my favorite part of the book you may ask? The Hellhound!! *gasps* Fang has his own personality who really brings some humor to the book. Their interactions cut the seriousness at times and brought a smile to my face more then once and laughing out loud.
Overall, nonstop heroine action. Great fight scenes!! Intertwine that with fun sideline characters makes it a fun book. The Mad Scientist will be looking forward to book two and three! Try Me & Fang Me!! ...more
I just completed a book review of Bite Me which had a Vampire Hunter/Slayer now I venture not far to Demon Hunter/Slayer. Contemporary, pft we can through that out the carriage and stomp on that right away!
Slayer books need something new. This books offers up the idea of demons and such creatures as being endangered species. Just like the bald eagle they are protected by the government. What is one called when they are against government rule? Terrorist. Kali D'Angelo is just that... Every Other Day.
Every Other Day she switches between a crude demon killer and young girl who attends high school and tries to cope with living with only her father who is not... a mom. Kali does not understand where and why she has power to kick supernatural derriere. When she is human we get to see how shrewd and intelligence during dangerous circumstances.
As one would expect our protagonist to be a misfit at school. Yet, she is faced with a decision to save one of her school mates. Wait, she is not power vixen at the moment. Will she do the right thing and risk her life?
One of the turn offs is her down and out attitude. Sympathy was to be had at first but it would not stop. However, I admit she did end up with a great band of misfits.
Overall, fast paced nonstop heroine action was packed around a complex scheme.

Concoction of a Review: My dears, I do not think I will mislead you when I say I adore Clare's writing in City of BPosted at http://madsteampunkery.com
Concoction of a Review: My dears, I do not think I will mislead you when I say I adore Clare's writing in City of Bones! This prequel was more within my bounds since it does include mass amounts of Steampunkery. Mad Scientist had to give this wonder a whirl!! Shamed I am though, due to leaving it wait for so long.
Without fare ado...
My dear Tessa Grey, as ghastly as she was dressed, she is no damsel in distress if you will. From the start she leaves America head over to the more stylish part of the world at the time. London meets her with a crazy duo (who were given the appropriate naming) the Dark Sisters. This doesn't seem out of sorts, however, she was supposed to be meeting her older brother, Nate. Needless to say our Tessa was kidnapped. These gruesome ladies push her to do painful tasks that reveal to us and Tessa of her true nature.... she is not as human and normal as she thought. *gasps*
Let us sit for a moment and process that. *sips some tea* Not human... How interesting! Even though I would have to say, it was a bit over dramatic. Don't tsk me. I assure you that this bit of information is a meant to fool you. For me this novel just galloped along at the slow pace matching my steed, Molasses.
Skip 50 pages... Ah, now here is where I think Clare finally switch from that awful bitter coffee to the distinguished taste of tea.
Too the dashing parts that makes my cheeks blush and my heart pitter patter in my chest. The fictional dashing fellows. Silver haired Jem made my heart swoon for him. Suffering and diseased as he may be. I will fight you off with my parasol for him! Mind you it is silver tipped!! The mouthy bad boy Will, was one that I wanted to slap and kiss and slap again. He got under my skin but not in a disturbing way. These boys did make the pages flip quickly away from these gloved finger in hop of more!
That's my girl Clare ;)
Now please do not fret my loves. If you did not pick up the City of Bones or the rest of the series it is very much ok. At least I would presume to think so. You would have a bit more of an understanding but who needs that when you have Jem and Will admist the pages!
Tessa does a good job at bring the Shadowhunter world to the reader since she too struggles to find out more of the world and of how her origins fit into it. Tessa is also a wonderfully strong and confident woman who doesn't make you cringe. Even more so since it was based back in the historical day where women were meant to be seen and not heard. I was expecting a daffodil who had to have matching parasols and shoes but this was just not the case!
This is a prequel I remind myself *sips more tea* however, it does make me on edge. There were just too many similarities between the characters of this series and the Mortal Instruments for this Mad Scientist to ignore. Tessa resembles Clary. As Will does Jace and Jem is like Alec. I could even say that dear Jessamine is like Isabelle. I was really hoping for Clare to make more of jump. I wanted new amazing characters that were unique and just as lovable. Not the same ones with new names.
For this reason I was a bit disappointed.
Overall, Clockwork Angel will give you Steampunk on many of its pages. Victorian London is a place that will dazzle you and make you think of nasty work conditions of the time. (Dickens) Clockwork automons are wonderful and the mysterious twist was enough to have my bloomers twisted as well. It was a dark Steampunkery read but not my favorite.
*I purchased this hardcover book with my own monies. The review is honest and is of my own Steampunkery mind. *

Concoction of a Review: There is snark and laughter from page one. I read the first, Tempest Rising, a while back..Posted at http://madsteampunkery.com
Concoction of a Review: There is snark and laughter from page one. I read the first, Tempest Rising, a while back... Mad Scientist thinks in Jan/Feb and just loved it. Thus far the second in the series is following in suit quit nicely. *rubs hand together* Yes! Quit nicely. I can also let you know that this book full of Jane antics did not let the Mad Scientist down. Nicole Peeler has a way with writing. Fun yet complex. I wonder if that is how she likes her men? *Waggles eyebrow*
*Gasps* Nicole you have my little old mind on Vampires & Barghest oh my!!
Our naughty little half-selkie Jane True was meeting up with her over protect hot "vampire" boyfriend Ryu for little Valentine's Day body intertwinement. I am most certainly not the only naughty one here! However, her sexy weekend with her buff controlling, overprotective Ry fizzled when she got caught up in the middle of one of his paranormal detective cases. My dear Jane your weekend was scorched but I promise I can take care of him! *evil grin amasses my face*
Jane attempts to stay out of harms way and sadly away from the arms of her lover by heading back to her cozy town, Rockabill. Silly name but it grows on you. She went back to her boring routine of a life. Working at the bookstore, taking care of her father, & training to create mage balls. Ladies! I said MAGE balls... let us stay on track here. At any rate, with her pitiful attempts at hiding Conleth the psycho serial killer found her!
This dangerous fact ends up to be wonderful for the reader. Jane is thrust into Boston out of her comfort zone. Slapped right in the middle where all the supernatural nonsense is hitting the paranormal fan I just imagined in my mind. Thus we get to meet new wonderful characters!! It was especially fun to meet Ryu's deputies... lackeys you call them now a days? *smirks & blushes* Do not find yourself surprised when you read about the "man" who does not wear any pants!
Ryu can be delicious in a certain way. I did twitch a few times at those certain moments where he is tainted with selfishness. Makes me cringe when the overprotective self righteous men spring out at you from under the ultra hotness. Ladies there is a reason he is sooo old and single!!
Oddly enough the Barghest had me drooling. *wink wink* Oh, that was a horrid pun to use on behalf of my dear Anyan. This paranormal species is a shape shifting dog that knows how to cook and has more power then he knows what to do with. Now I would like to help him use some of that pent up power in the bedroom!! *blushes profusely* Ah, that would be wondrous. *gaps* Mad Scientist would just like to quote a certain fellow bookie as she would call this character, "Sex on a Stick!!"
The Mad Scientist admits she fell in love with this boy when she first watched Troy but with his long hair and scruffy face makes him the perfect Anyan!!
Overall, Tracking the Tempest was a great read. I got to picture this man for well over 300 pages! Crazy one liners had me laughing out to myself, insane plot twists kept my brain busy & there were sexy romps to be had! I never wanted to put this book down!
*I received this book free of charge from my sassy friend Jen! My Mad review is completely honest and full of my thoughts on the book and the very yummy men inside. *
