Concoction of a Review: This was a great ride – not your average ordinary bland bandwagon vampire novel. I wanted to read it fast because it was so good and slow because I didn’t want it to end. When Greyfrair finally did come to an end I was full of emotion for this book that once I read the last word I literally hugged the book. For the Mad Scientist this book was that good. No, it was an amazing string of words that needs to be put on a silver platter!
Vampire Empire: The Greyfriar is quite a book that is made by twisting and welding together Steampunkery, a dash of horror, whipped with major action and adventure, if that were not enough lets top it off with slight romance with a side of politics and of course some bloody war. Really, what in the world is this book missing. Not a thing!
However, this book was not good just because it was the ultimate at combining genres. Clay and Susan Griffith have a gift for providing the most wonderful words together to bring you right into the book. The images that were tossing about in my head were bold and full which had me thinking I was really along for the ride. Not only did the imagery of the world blow me away but the fight scenes had me all up in a huff of excitement! I wanted to grab a sword and a hero and jump into the fight!
The Northern Hemisphere was attacked in 1870, nearly killing and destroying what we know to be the Western Civilization. The Great Killing.
Princess Adele, the heir of Equatoria is due to wed a renowned vampire killer, Senator Clark, and united her Empire with America. This arrangement now poses a threat to the vampires that live in the northern areas of the world. Adele and her younger brother Simon are on their way to northern territories for political matters in Marseilles when their dirigible is intercepted by a larger than normal ban of vampires lead by Flay. She is warrior vampress that follows orders from her master, Cesare the youngest son of King Dimitry. He is known for mass killing of humans. Now the heir of Equatoria, Adele, is running from… Flay. These vampires are parasitic with very powerful physical characteristics whom roam freely in the colder areas, feedlot humans for dinner, and terrorize others so they are afraid of being enslaved by them.
*Damsel in distress announces the entrance of said hero.*
The Greyfriar swoops in to save her. I fell in love with him as soon as he pulled out all of these weapons and started hacking up the vampires on top of him in a gory morbid way. *sigh* It is also quite a shock because The Greyfriar is a man whose stories of heroism and acts of battle are all thought to be fables. He ended up being this strong yet mysterious man who drew in not only me but our lovely Adele as well. (I should mention that she is crafty with a weapon as well!) Ultimately is kidnapped… ah, heiress-napped albeit her best efforts of flight and the efforts of her masked mystery fighter, by Flay who brings her to England for Cesare.
Enter… Gareth, the oldest son and heir to the Vampire Empire once King Dimitry leaves this world. He lives in Scotland away from his role of heir to the supposed throne. He pulls the heir card and takes Adele away from Cesare’s hand. He starts to learn more about “human” culture through Adele. I found myself chuckling when he was learning to write.
There is one huge shocking twist to this tale that had me and probably most of the readers a bit shocked when it was revealed. It is something that makes this story just that more incredible. I urge you to read this one because if you don’t you are missing out, *wink*.
The growth and development between Adele and Greyfriar was utterly touching, it had me dabbing a small tear away. Their emotions gradual grew to make it all that more believable. She was strong and held herself up to her values. He showed her that not all things you are taught are always right. She learned to trust another. The tender relationship between these two was very pleasing.
Overall, Loved Loved Loved Vampire Empire: The Greyfriar. Tis was truly a grand tale of vampires and humans that was packed full of action right from chapter 1! I am going to be waiting for Book Two... Wait! I am already waiting for Book Two, from the minute this book ended!
*Thanks to the wonderful people behind PYR I received a copy of this fabulous Steampunkery novel. However, this has not affected my actions, feelings, or review of this book.* ...more
The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer was just a utterly beautiful read. I do believe it rivals my blood red silver tipped parasol and that is something!
I admit that it is going to be rather hard to review this twisted tale without revealing too much of the goodness. I LOVED the book so I have to gush about it. Just a tad.
The best thing about this book... It is full of Crazy!!
Mara is a dark haired beauty who has hallucinations, hears voices of her dead friends, and unexpected things are happening to her. *Sips tea* Mara? What can the Mad Scientist say? She is just a little on the psychotic side. Why? Her best friend, boyfriend and a friend all went to the great beyond when the abandoned asylum collapsed on them while they were searching for paranormal activity.
How did the building just collapse? What if she is the only one who knows what happened? What if she cannot remember what really happened?
Would you want to remember?
Mara's family moves to Florida to get away from what happened. Attempting at at normal life did not work out so well for her. She becomes the new target for the snotty prep queen of the school, Anna. *Grr...* Leave Mara alone! Psychotic episodes start to happen. She does not know what is real or not. Neither did I! I LOVED it!
Time to swoon! *Fans self* Yes, even deeply troubled girls deserve some European tousled hair hunk to look at. Noah Shaw is just the lad for this! He is an arrogant ASS who happens to just be about the most sexy thing described lately. He is a rumpled sight who just rolls out of bed. Gorgeous tousled messy hair. His contemptuous presumptuous ASS did not turn me away.
Lucky for the reader there is NO love at first sight! The romance builds up very slowly. The sexual tension even had me on edge! I loved how Mara brushed him off like he was NOT a swoonworthy mess! I must say... it is strong of her to be cautious instead of flouncing to his side like a ninny.
Michelle Hodkin's story had the Mad Scientist at every page. What an amazing debut and I am trying not to be torn because I want book two now! The story had me sending mental hugs to Mara and dreaming of dear Noah. Plus all of the other characters were so well developed that I truly enjoyed them all. Even her overprotective brother. The story was sprinkled with Mara's snark which broke up the seriousness of this suspense novel.
Overall, it is safe to say that The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer is easily going to be my favorite read of the year. Best Suspense Novel of 2011!!
5 Blasts This book is out now. Go buy it because the Mad Scientist could sum them book up with three letters. WOW!...more

A dystopian novel like nothing theFirst Lines: I wait. They keep us in the dark for so long that we lose sense of our eyelids.
Concoction of a Review:
A dystopian novel like nothing the Mad Scientist has encountered. Admittedly, I had to think about this book for a bit before I could sit down and write about it. Ok... I started the review and forgot about it. So.... now I finish in a vain attempt at reviewing such a wonderful book.
Rhine lives in a world where genetic engineering has made the offspring of the "first generation" live until 25 for males and 20 for females. It is a scary time to be alive and for such a short period of time. Not only were smart enough to make a perfect being they managed to blow up the whole world. Of course, excluding North America. How original? Blah. America is so much better and humans are stupid. Not a seller for me as you can tell.
In this world young girls look over their shoulder in fear of being abducted for prostiution or to be sold off as a bride. Any reader should shiver at this idea. I did.
Rhine is a spirited soul who was tricked and captured. Waking up states away from her brother she starts to search for a way to free herself. She did not want her last four years to go by being stuck as one of a series of wives to Linden. Yes, polygamy! She is even willing to risk everything to be free. To be with her twin once again.
What would you risk to save yourself???
"Eventually I realize that I am holding him just as tight as he holds on to me. And here we are: two small dying things, as the world ends around us like falling autumn leaves."
*Free ARC from NetGalley which did not impede on my Mad Review. It is completely honest and full of my thoughts on the book. *

Concoction of a Review: Nicole Peeler's Jane True Series has me on edge. I reaPosted at Mad Steampunkery & Book Reviews! http://madsteampunkery.com
Concoction of a Review: Nicole Peeler's Jane True Series has me on edge. I read one book one earlier this year. Jen the Bibliophile sent me book 2 & 3 because she knows my infinity for starting a series but never continuing with it. After completing Tracking the Tempest a book full of snark and supernatural hunks I quickly decided that this series would not be left unread.
**Note to self: Go buy book 4, Eye of the Tempest, soon!!!**
Tempest's Legacy jumps in shortly after Tracking the Tempest ended. Jane continues to train her offensive and defensive magical technique. Her relationship is still a ball of tension from the end of the last book. Which leads us to seeing more of Anyan. Jane's eyes start to wonder toward the Barghest. *waggles eyebrow*
Nonetheless, there is a surprising bout of news that ruffles Jane's feathers. Someone found out that supernatural females were being taken. Not kindly I might add. This horrid news includes information about someone who she most would love to meet and know more about. Dying to know who?? *grin*
The mystery takes Jane out of little ol' Rockabill, her hometown in Maine, as she tags along to figure out what exactly is going on and how to stop it. We have a mix of characters from the first book, from Ryu's Boston team & even a few brand new characters! Interactions are hilarious at best!! We are even pulled into a new area... The Borderlands!! (Many exclamation points but it truly is exciting!)
This book has little to no nookie in it so I was a bit disappointed in that but I'm looking forward to Anyan. *blushes*
It truly is a great series!!! Peeler's snark is completely sprinkled throughout this novel like the others, however, the demeanor is a lot darker. The events that unfold are a bit harsh and force Jane to grow even more, powerfully and emotionally. Jane True is Truly Bad A$$ in this book!
*I received this book free of charge from my sassy friend Jen! My Mad review is completely honest and full of my thoughts on the book and the very yummy men inside. *...more
Concoction of a Review: There is snark and laughter from page one. I read the first, Tempest Rising, a while back..Posted at http://madsteampunkery.com
Concoction of a Review: There is snark and laughter from page one. I read the first, Tempest Rising, a while back... Mad Scientist thinks in Jan/Feb and just loved it. Thus far the second in the series is following in suit quit nicely. *rubs hand together* Yes! Quit nicely. I can also let you know that this book full of Jane antics did not let the Mad Scientist down. Nicole Peeler has a way with writing. Fun yet complex. I wonder if that is how she likes her men? *Waggles eyebrow*
*Gasps* Nicole you have my little old mind on Vampires & Barghest oh my!!
Our naughty little half-selkie Jane True was meeting up with her over protect hot "vampire" boyfriend Ryu for little Valentine's Day body intertwinement. I am most certainly not the only naughty one here! However, her sexy weekend with her buff controlling, overprotective Ry fizzled when she got caught up in the middle of one of his paranormal detective cases. My dear Jane your weekend was scorched but I promise I can take care of him! *evil grin amasses my face*
Jane attempts to stay out of harms way and sadly away from the arms of her lover by heading back to her cozy town, Rockabill. Silly name but it grows on you. She went back to her boring routine of a life. Working at the bookstore, taking care of her father, & training to create mage balls. Ladies! I said MAGE balls... let us stay on track here. At any rate, with her pitiful attempts at hiding Conleth the psycho serial killer found her!
This dangerous fact ends up to be wonderful for the reader. Jane is thrust into Boston out of her comfort zone. Slapped right in the middle where all the supernatural nonsense is hitting the paranormal fan I just imagined in my mind. Thus we get to meet new wonderful characters!! It was especially fun to meet Ryu's deputies... lackeys you call them now a days? *smirks & blushes* Do not find yourself surprised when you read about the "man" who does not wear any pants!
Ryu can be delicious in a certain way. I did twitch a few times at those certain moments where he is tainted with selfishness. Makes me cringe when the overprotective self righteous men spring out at you from under the ultra hotness. Ladies there is a reason he is sooo old and single!!
Oddly enough the Barghest had me drooling. *wink wink* Oh, that was a horrid pun to use on behalf of my dear Anyan. This paranormal species is a shape shifting dog that knows how to cook and has more power then he knows what to do with. Now I would like to help him use some of that pent up power in the bedroom!! *blushes profusely* Ah, that would be wondrous. *gaps* Mad Scientist would just like to quote a certain fellow bookie as she would call this character, "Sex on a Stick!!"
The Mad Scientist admits she fell in love with this boy when she first watched Troy but with his long hair and scruffy face makes him the perfect Anyan!!
Overall, Tracking the Tempest was a great read. I got to picture this man for well over 300 pages! Crazy one liners had me laughing out to myself, insane plot twists kept my brain busy & there were sexy romps to be had! I never wanted to put this book down!
*I received this book free of charge from my sassy friend Jen! My Mad review is completely honest and full of my thoughts on the book and the very yummy men inside. *
