I feel like I'm going to have to think about this one for awhile to decide how I feel about it. But I think I feel good about it, mostly, although it was a harder (view spoiler)[ (and weepier!) (hide spoiler)] read than I imagined it being.

And I thought it was compelling for awhile. I read it late into the night wanting to figure out what was going to happen next. But in the end, I think it was just pretty good. And for this long of a book, I just think it could have been better. I would have liked to hear more about training at the convent and what Sybella and Annith. I wanted less on who the traitor probably was (because it became obvious the first time it was suggested. It didn't need to keep being repeated). I don't think it was resolved enough, really, and then of course I found out there was a sequel. I don't know that I feel the need to read it.(less)

The story of Jack the Ripper features into it, which I didn't know very much about going into the story and it was really well-researched for sure. I think this would have been a great one-off, but apparently it's going to be a series. This read as a great one-off until the very last sentence which was trying to be cliff hanger-y. I think it's a good cliff hanger, but too weak for me to keep going with the rest of this series.(less)

I wanted to read this book all of the time. I think part of it was right book at the right time, but the other part was good writing, excellent story (especially crush to other plot points ratio), sneaky historical facts (I learned about Colonial times and I wasn't even mad about it!), funny, and a lovable heroine teen Christiana TOTES would have befriended. I plan on rec'ing it left and right this fall/winter. I really wish it would have been released in summer though, considering it's a summer story, but it's good enough that I won't hold that against this wonderful book.(less)

Seriously, this book does have some cool stuff. I like that there is so many pages showing the actual ads and pictures from the time period, especially when they say a character looks like Miss America from Missouri and then show Miss America's picture from that year.
There was also a lot of teachable material in here. If I was teaching social studies to 5-6th grade, this book would be an awesome tie-in. I learned about the time period and wasn't even mad that I was reading history, because it was such a good read. That Deborah Wiles, she knows how to write a story.(less)

Definitely more emphasis on romance than mystery. You can't help but love (well, I can't, anyway) the restrained social rules of Regency England (a boy kissed a girl! Will she be ruined??). The Jane Austen lover in me appreciates a story about coming out parties and balls and a mother anxious for her daughter to get married (in a classy way, not in a Mrs. Bennet way) and a daughter who wants more than just to be someone's wife.(less)

It reminds me of To Kill a Mockingbord a little, in that it's a compelling story that is just so heartfelt. Love reading about how Dit and Emma learn more about themselves by learning about each other. It does have some period language that is still a bit shocking to me, but is used in a way that supports the story.

This book is historical fiction (particularly the time period of the Russian revolution) AND fantasy (the main character is a Fetch, a guide that takes those that die into the afterlife) rolled into one. Neither genre is usually my favorite, but this book just really worked. The idea is really fresh and new. I'm dying for someone else to read this so I can TALK about it with someone!
Even though it's teen, I think that's mostly because there's bit of violence. If you had a mature 6th grade reader who liked fantasy, you might be able to give them this. And it makes me annoyed that the tagline is "A Supernatural Romance" because I think you could really sell boys on this book if not for that tagline on the front. (less)
