Oh, it's small, dusty, and ordinary in most ways, but the thing is, there are these Vampires...They own the town. They run it. And until now they've been the unquestioned ruling class. "
That is until the Draug showed up.
There's a reason why after reading Twelve books in this series I'm still obsessed with it! Rachel Caine has one of the most vivid imaginations out there in the fantasy writing world. Her imagination never ceases to amaze me, how her stories just more complex and amazing with each book.
Black Dawn picks up immediately where Last Breath leaves us with the Draug, planning to destroy the Vampire and take over Morganville. Even with the vampires ruling under a ruthless strict policy, it appears to be a blissful dream compared to what the Draug have in store for the citizens of Morganville, Texas. Unfortunately Vampire Amelie the Ruler of Morganville is powerless against the Draug with her injury she sustained in Last Breath, and with that the future of the town is left to he residents of the Glass House; Claire, Shane, Michael, Eve, and of course with the help of my favorite Insane Vampire Myrnin. Claire continues to get more BadAss with each book and her best friends are such outstanding supporting characters I've grown to love and without them The Morganville Vampire series wouldn't be the same.
If you haven't had the pleasure to read The Morganville Vampires then I suggest you do because Rachel Caine is a genius at world building and even though this book is not left on a cliffhanger, she still manages to set us readers up for another action packed, adventure with an even darker path than its predecessor.
"You go on, take care of your sister. I'll be fine."
He closed his eyes for a second. "No," he said. "If you go, I go, too. I'm coming. Monica, just get inside and stay there." "No way. I'm not letting you run off to get killed somewhere without me, jackass."
"Shut up" Eve said flatly. "We have zero time for you and your bullshit dramatics." "Or what, you'll bleed on me, Emo Princess of Freakdomonia?"
Claire stepped forward and got Monica's attention. She didn't know how she looked, but Monica seemed to shift a little, as if she was considering taking a step back. "Fine. You come with us." At the very least, Monica was a rabbit to throw to the wolves, and she wouldn't hesitate to do it if it was the difference between life and death for Shane. "If you get in my way, I'll kill you."
My one and only gripe is that I want more Myrnin scenes lots of them, and unfortunately I'm greedy so there's never enough. But I can say that Myrnin fans will love him in Black Dawn. Even with the death of a beloved character I would still say this is one of Rachel Caine's best and I'll be impatiently patiently waiting for Bitter Blood. If you're a fan of dark, gritty, series with vampires, and a Kick-Ass heroine then I suggest you read The Morganville Vampires, it's a favorite of mine and there's a reason why it's on the New York Times best selling list!! An easy 5 stars! It was unbelievably exciting I couldn't put it down. Once again Rachel Caine continues to be an auto-buy author of mine.
Myrnin wasn't listening. He was muttering under his breath, something in a language I didn't know, but from the sound of it, he was cursing like a druMyrnin wasn't listening. He was muttering under his breath, something in a language I didn't know, but from the sound of it, he was cursing like a drunken sailor as he stared murderously at the black portal. Then he switched to English.
"All right," he said. "Kill me, then, you faithless pile of lumber and nails. Kill me if you have to, but I am coming through."
So everyone that knows me knows I'm completely obsessed with Rachel Caine and her dark gritty world of Morganville Vampires and especially my insanely brilliant vampire Myrnin. He's to die for, literally. ;)
"Frank." Myrnin said, and all the fussiness was gone from his voice, leaving it flat and cold. "If you wish to be insulting, I can just mute you for a few days until you learn manners. These are my guests. Granted, I don't really like your son, but I tolerate him, and you can do the same."
Okay so, to those of you that have not succumbed to my begging recommendations of this series, shame on you because you're missing out. Big time! ;) It's the eleventh book already, and this series has yet to get boring.
So usually these books are told from Claire (a human prodigy) POV, and she's courageous, and lovable, and fearless, but when I discovered this book would be told from several other POV's although Claire is awesome, I must admit I was curious. We get to explore inside The Ruthless Founder of Morganville Amelie (vampire)), as well as deliciously devoted Shane (Claire's bf) did i forget sexy?, Our favorite Morganville Goth Princess Eve (Claire's best friend), and our gorgeous guitar playing vampire Michael (Eve's gf).
Although I found it fascinating inside their minds, my only wish is that we can get inside my absolute favorite Morganville residents mind;Myrnin!!!!! Every page he appears in the book I'm glued instantly, yes I'll admit, I'm not ashamed I have a huge embarrassingly shameless crush on a sometimes insane, though nonetheless absolutely brilliant vampire who keeps a pet spider named Bob as a companion, a human brain in a jar so he can have instant scientific access to the city, Hawaiian shirt wearing, bunny slipper sporting, pompous, arrogant, handsome twenty something frozen in time vampire named Myrnin. ;)
Wow! A lot happened in this book, and it took a dark and grittier turn in a new an exciting direction. In the middle of the book I was heartbroken and found myself crying along with everyone......I was wishing that (view spoiler)[Claire would have been brought back as a vampire, so Shane would be forced to accept her for what he hates, even though his best friend is a vampire, sometimes he barely tolerates him. Either way I'm glad Claire wasn't gone for good, and Rachel Caine handled it great care, especially the emotional parts with Myrnin, Eve, and especially Shane. (hide spoiler)] obviously Rachel Caine decided on the alternative to what I was eagerly anticipating, but it was still very enjoyable in the end. :)
Men are always rescuing women, but sometimes they're the ones needing saving too!
Eve leaned forward. "I've learned a lot of things, Monica,"she said just enough to be heard over the wind and the music. "Michael is missing. He may be dying. I am not in the mood for your shallow bullshit right now. If you get in my way, I will cut you, because you are nothing but a speed bump on my way to saving him. Are we clear?"
I love that Eve will move mountains to save Michael and he in turn will always protect her, even if it means going against his own species.
"I want you to promise me one thing."
"Promise me you'll marry me. Not now. Someday. Because I need to know."
Well what could I possibly say about deliciously devoted bad boy Shane, except for........Can I have my very own Shane???!!!! ;)
I absolutely Loved, Loved, Loved, Last Breath!!!! I can't wait until the next installment.
Lately I haven't had much time to read, and luckily this book was exactly what I needed to get me back into my reading grove. ;) As usual The Morganville Vampires have yet to disappoint me. Fortunately Rachel Caine writes these about every six months so the wait is short compared to other series.
