This book is full of unique but simple vegetarian recipes that make eating healthier easy. The recipes are easily adaptable for vegans and meat eaters alike and don’t leave anyone feeling like they are “eating side dishes” if you have a family with mixed dietary preferences. The cultural infusions into each dish make them surprising and give the veggies a delicious edge.

Not exactly a cookbook; a former editor at Harper’s magazine and sometime chef at Chez Panisse, Adler shares tips on all aspects of food preparation, storage and re-use. Through it all she extends the invitation to view individual foods clearly and without presumption— to appreciate each onion, egg and grain of rice for exactly what it is to begin with, and proceeding to cook with its most essential qualities in mind. –Kate D(less)

Readers will find scrumptious meals they can make easily and without fuss, but still high in flavor. She also includes kid-friendly meals, as she is now a mother, and discusses various ways she introduces new foods to her daughter, Jade. I tried several of the recipes from this book, and found her ideas fresh, nutritious, and fun. The pictures are beautiful too, offering a wide range of inspiration for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. –Tiffany J.-(less)

Jeni has created some incredibly unique flavors; we made her Wild Berry Lavender ice cream and a week later, the Salty Carmel Ice Cream. The deserts were rich and creamy, bursting with flavor. The book provides a pictorial overview of the steps to follow while the recipes are straight forward with easily found ingredients at your local grocer. -Sara G

Included are 1950's cocktail party hits like Baked Alaska and Osso Buco. That being said, it's California Osso Buco with Kumquat sauce, not my Italian grandmother's Osso Buco. It's a cookbook of delightful juxtapositions just like that one- classics paired with reinvented classics. The Salted Carmel Sauce and Meyer Lemon Cupcakes (the candied lemon wheel decorations that top these are amazing!) are already hits at my house, and there are many more recipes I'm waiting to try. Definitely worth riffling through! -- Alexis S.

The other "Eat this, not that" books simply replace really high calorie junk food with fewer calorie junk food. What I do like about this book though, is it approaches the weight loss solution sensibly. Cooking at home as opposed to eating fast food is a much better way and this book will help you cut several calories doing so.
